- An overly friendly though somewhat manipulative family comes to town, as do the workings of a professional art thief, and Jim wonders if the two facts are related.
- After Jim saves Dave Cotten's life, he and Stephanie become fast friends with Dave, his wife Michelle, and their two kids, but Jim begins to suspect that the Cottens may be leading their own secret lives. Meanwhile, Daphne throws her hat into the high school ring for student council president, JJ discovers a rival for Natalie's affections, and Katie reveals a secret to Stephanie about her relationship with Joshua - aka The Watcher.—ABC Publicity
- Daphne (Kay Panabaker) still doesn't remember anything that happened to the family since the plane crash in Brazil. And even having Jim (Michael Chiklis) demonstrate his powers by lifting a couch, Stephanie (Julie Benz) getting her water in half a second, or JJ (Jimmy Bennett) acting smart didn't help. However, Jim thought having everybody hold hands might help so Daphne can read their minds. It turns out she still had her powers; Will only managed to block her memories. A little practice, and she was good as new. Practice being what Katie (Autumn Reeser) needs before her next date with Will (Josh Stewart), as she was still a virgin (yeah, I call BS on that one, too).
George (Romany Malco) is updating Jim on the latest from crime-land; an $8,000,000 painting was stolen when Jim had a more immediate need for his powers. He acted as a speed bump for a guy who didn't see a city bus as he was crossing the streets. The man, Dave, insisted Jim tell him who he was in order to thank him. And Dave does...by bringing his family to the Powell's house. Awkward doesn't begin to describe it, especially since Jim didn't tell his family what he did. They accept Dave and Michelle's invitation to a barbeque the next night, over Jim's protests. However, Stephanie wanted a normal night with some friends, something the family hadn't done in some time.
Jim heads out to another gallery heist. He finds the man, only to have the crook throw firecrackers in his face. The painting was saved, but the man got away. Jim was certain it was a pro at work (like James Bond, but a bad guy), however he has to go to the barbeque with his family. Stephanie is actually just as worried about making an impression as she is her missing journal which catalogued their powers. But she is doing well with the small talk with Michelle, who has moved from city to city with Dave. And Jim will get along fine with Dave as soon as he stops picking up 100 lb bags of charcoal with one hand and is able to talk about being in a hair band unironically. But Jim does offer to have Daphne show Chloe and Troy around the school the next day. Offer as in have Daphne mind read what he wanted. As it turns out, Chloe stood up to the class president (BTW, the real Bailey Browning is WAY nicer than that.) and got her thinking of running for class president. JJ's tour with Troy didn't go as well, as Troy basically insulted JJ's friend/girlfriend. Stephanie and Michelle agree to meet for another drink, even though Jim worries about having to continue keeping secrets from them. But Michelle has a whopper of her own: Dave is the art thief.
Katie's date went as awkwardly as a date would go if you were about to lose your virginity to someone. She confesses to Will she's a virgin, complete with the obligatory "boldly going where no man has gone before" line. Will backs away, and Katie is left to think she freaked him out. But he walks for much different reasons. Will is so affected by Katie, he tells Dr. King (Stephen Collins) he is quitting. King warns him he won't be able to be the same person without his powers, but Will is going to take that chance.
George talks to Jim about crime (as usual) and tells him art museums were hit in Boston and Seattle as well. The places Dave used to live. Jim thinks it's just coincidence, but George thinks Jim wants to think of Dave as normal. ("You guys are a bowl and some Bee Gees away from a key party.") George recommends watching both Dave and the museum, since he figures the painting was pre-sold and has to be stolen one way or another.
Troy, as it turns out, is a player and tries to move in on JJ's friend/girlfriend, Natalie. JJ asks him nicely to back off, but Troy challenges him to man up. And thanks to the physics of the exact place to hit someone, JJ takes him down with one punch. His friend/girlfriend is very impressed, but JJ isn't happy. But it turns out Troy acting like a douchebag on purpose to make JJ defend her honor. And it worked, as Natalie removed the 'friend' tag on her relationship with JJ and was now his girlfriend. Meanwhile, Daphne tries to get out the vote with Chloe's encouragement, but the thoughts of the students were on anything but the election. She was not encouraged. (Sadly, it only gets worse as you get older, Daphne.) But she used that to her advantage in her speech to the student body. She knew what was on their minds, literally. And they liked it.
Stephanie and Michelle get wasted, and Stephanie learns the hard way to not play true confessions with someone. Fortunately, Jim interrupts before Stephanie can give away that she can zoop. To make matters worse, he has to listen to George noshing on a sub sandwich while he's starving and watching the museum. But Dave does strike at the museum. Jim accidentally trips a laser beam to set off the alarms. Dave slips past before the security doors come down, but not before he realizes Jim was the one after him. Jim breaks the bars to escape. Jim goes to talk to Dave, promising Stephanie he'd use a light touch. Which means accusing him of the crime. Dave is ticked, and Jim laments to George about losing a friend. Of course, George reminds him Peter Parker ticked off his friends at every turn. ("With great power comes great...loneliness?") George finally relents and tells Jim to just apologize. Jim pays a visit to Dave, doesn't find him, but finds the evidence of Dave's theft in his garage...only to be caught by Michelle. But Dave wasn't the thief: Michelle was.
Jim calls Stephanie, who agrees to confront Michelle about it. She originally stole art to support the family after Dave lost his job, but she got caught up in it. Michelle begs Stephanie to let them go away, but Stephanie offers to take them to the D.A. to get a reduced sentence. Michelle offers to turn herself in after she tells Dave and the kids what she has done. George is out of his mind for Jim letting Stephanie handle this. And George was right, since Michelle ditched Stephanie to meet with her fence for the stolen art. Stephanie catches up, and the fence pulls out a gun. Michelle jumps in front of the bullet for Stephanie. Stephanie visits her in the hospital to thank her for saving her life, but Michelle said she didn't have any intention of stopping until she did that. Dave blamed himself for what his wife did, but Jim tried to comfort him.
JIM: That's the thing about secrets. You don't know what they are.
George was able to ID the shooter from the license plate, but Stephanie was still upset that Dave and Michelle's family was going to be broken up. However, that would have happened had he not saved Dave that day.
Will goes to Katie and tells her he "chooses" her, which she found a bit confusing, but obviously the audience knows what he meant. They have their magical night, and Katie is in love...until Stephanie's journal drops out of Will's coat.
