The East German leaders was hoping for a good outcome from Udo Lindeberg's performance at the "Festival for World Peace". The famous rock star from West Germany was also an outspoken peace activist. By allowing him to perform, communist leaders was hoping to portray themselves as committed to peace as well. The tickets for the concert were issued by the communist Free German Youth, so Udo Lindenberg was facing 4 200 dutiful GDR youths and a large number of officials at the concert. Stasi was monitoring every step Lindenberg took on East German soil.—DW
