Syfy has scored two bonafide hits over the past few years with its acquired scripted series, Lost Girl and Continuum. It was also great that they acquired and aired Primeval: New World even though it was a one-season series, along with similarly-situated Sinbad.
Now Syfy has added another series to its list of acquireds, with the New Zealand series The Almighty Johnsons, about four modern-day brothers who have inherited the powers of Norse gods. It’s said to be a “compelling blend of fantasy and comedy” and “quirky”. I love ”quirky” but I reserve judgment as to whether or not this will qualify until I see it. I’ll definitely check them it out, but don’t we all kinda wish they could change the name?
Hang on, he’s in The Hobbit! The one on the left, that’s Dean O’Gorman, he’s Fili, one of the good looking dwarves!

Syfy has purchased the first two seasons of the New Zealand show, "The Almighty Johnsons." The comedic fantasy about Norse gods living in modern-day society will premiere in the United States at some point in 2014.
"The Almighty Johnsons" focuses on the four Johnson brothers -- ordinary guys living in Auckland who just happen to be the human incarnations of Norse gods. Unfortunately, they each have very limited superpowers from this and thus must deal with everyday life like everyone else. This mostly consists of mid-level jobs and drinking a lot of beer.
Beginning when the youngest Johnson brother finds out he's Odin and therefore must find his soulmate in order to avoid potentially global catastrophe, "The Almighty Johnsons" is currently airing its third season in New Zealand. The first two seasons -- 23 episodes -- are set to air on Syfy.

Exclusive: All3Media America, the recently launched U.S. branch of the UK’s All3Media, is formally starting a scripted division. It will be run by former Bad Robot executive Eric Lehrman, named VP Scripted Television. The move reflects the company’s desire to enter the U.S. scripted business and build on All3Media’s slate of international scripted formats, including shows from Company Pictures (Shameless, Skins, The Village, Secret State), Lime Pictures (Hollyoaks), Objective Productions (Peep Show, Fresh Meat), South Pacific (Outrageous Fortune, The Almighty Johnsons), and Bentley (Midsomer Murders). All3Media America principals Eli Holzman and Stephen Lambert said that getting into scripted is something they had been looking to do since the two launched Studio Lambert USA in 2008. All3Media was an investor in StudioLambert USA and late last year triggered an option to buy the company, which became the core of All3Media USA.

There’s a buzz in the air, sending a very clear message: Syfy is looking to greenlight some scripts, probably within the next week. Strangely, Syfy might be ordering these scripts straight to series instead of the traditional order of a pilot. The two series that look like they’ll be getting the greenlight love both come from Battlestar Galactica creator and executive producer Ron Moore. They are Helix and The Almighty Johnsons. I don’t know if they’ll get that series order, but I think they have a great shot thanks to their intriguing – and very different – premises. But why listen to me gush about these potential shows? Allow me to introduce you to them.
According to Deadline, Helix revolves around a team of scientists investigating a disease outbreak in an Antarctic research facility. Right off the bat, you’ve got my interest by making this an isolated story,...

I hear Syfy is zeroing in on scripts for its next round of green lights, which may come next week. I hear among the top contenders for a pickup are Helix, from Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore, and The Almighty Johnsons. I hear Syfy are contemplating straight-to-series orders in lieu of traditional pilot pickups, and that the network may make greenlight decisions in conjunction with existing series renewals. Moore’s Helix, from Sony Picture TV where Moore is under an overall deal, is about a team of scientists investigating a possible disease outbreak at an Antarctic research facility. Cameron Porsandeh wrote the spec the pilot is based off of and serves as co-executive producer. Lynda Obst exec produces alongside Moore. The Almighty Johnsons is an adaptation of the New Zealand fantasy comedy/drama series created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang and produced by All3Media’s South Pacific Pictures.

The Almighty Johnsons is a new comedy-drama series about four brothers, raised in heartland New Zealand, who also happen to be the living incarnations of Norse Gods. They even have their own super-God-powers. Sort of – it’s just that their powers aren’t actually all that powerful. Putting Norse Gods right where they don’t want to be: in the bodies of a bunch of New Zealand lads saddled with a distinct lack of heroism and all the faults, flaws and desires of ordinary mortals.
The series made its UK debut last week on Syfy, and the channel have sent another preview of the series, this time from tonight’s episode of the series, which airs on Syfy at 9pm.

Sneak Peek "The Almighty Johnsons", a New Zealand-lensed fantasy comedy/drama TV series created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang, produced by South Pacific Pictures.
"...on his 21st birthday, student 'Axl Johnson' discovers that he and his family members are reincarnated Norse gods.
"The only problem is, they don't have full control of their powers and it is up to Axl (the reincarnation of 'Odin') to restore those powers, while ensuring the family's survival by finding the reincarnation of Odin's wife, 'Frigg'.
"Matters are complicated by the presence of four antagonistic Norse goddesses who are trying to find Frigg before the Johnsons do to prevent the restoration of the gods' powers.
"But the Johnsons and the band of goddess rivals aren't the only Norse deities living in exile in New Zealand..."
Season 2 started shooting October 2011.
Syfy in the UK will start airing the series February 2012.

Peter Jackson announced more cast members for "The Hobbit" on his Facebook page. Here's the director's post: I'm very pleased to be welcoming two new cast members to our team. Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He's recently been in an excellent TV series down here called "The Almighty Johnsons", and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year. Dean will be joining us next week. I'm also pleased to announce that Lee Pace will be playing the Elven King Thranduil. Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil. He's going to be great. We loved his...

Casting for “The Hobbit” is still not complete. On Peter Jackson’s Facebook, he announced the addition of two new cast members to the prequel of “Lord of the Rings.” Actors Dean O’Gorman and Lee Pace will be joining the production, which is currently filming in New Zealand. Here is the message Jackson posted: I'm very pleased to be welcoming two new cast members to our team. Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Last week, news came out that Robert Kazinsky would no longer be playing the dwarf Fili in The Hobbit, but the role has already been recast, with Dean O'Gorman stepping into the beard of the Eastenders actor. Director Peter Jackson announced the news on Facebook, saying, "Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with." Petey also mentioned that O'Gorman is currently starring in a show called The Almighty Johnsons, so get your dick jokes ready, folks.
In the same Facebook post (is this really how we get news now?), Jackson noted that Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace would also be joining the Lord of the Rings prequel as the Elvenking Thranduil. Unlike old "second choice" O'Gorman, the director said of Pace, "Lee has always been our first choice for Thranduil," and "When we were first discussing who would be right for Thranduil,...

Hobbits know how to enjoy themselves. A nip o' the ale here, a puff of the wacky weed there and in between, nothing but food. Sure, questing to save the world from magic rings is important, but Hobbits know that second breakfast is just as important, which is why today's announcement is so exciting.
Because on Middle Earth, it's high time for pie time.
Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien, pies and "Pushing Daisies" can all rejoice, as Lee Pace, who played the Pie Man in the dearly departed cult hit TV show has just been cast as Elven King Thranduil in "The Hobbit."
And Pace isn't the only newcomer to "The Hobbit," which is currently filming on location in New Zealand for a December, 2012 release; as reported by Slash Film, Kiwi actor Dean O'Gorman has also joined the production as the dwarf Fili, replacing Robert Kazinski, who dropped out of the...

Peter Jackson is throwing the doors to Middle Earth wide open.
Back in New Zealand to shoot "The Hobbit," a two-part prequel to his illustrious, Oscar-winning film adaptations of Jrr Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," Jackson is using Facebook to take fans closer to the action, posting videos that take viewers behind the scenes of the film.
In his first video, he opens up the costume shop (a Wizard Workshop, as he calls it), reveals the reconstruction of vital sets and shows the intense training and scientific precision needed to capture all of his intense battle scenes. Many of the sets and fighting training sessions were the same as the first three movies, providing a look back into those three classics, as well.
Martin Freeman, perhaps best known for his role in the original UK version of "The Office," will star in the films as Bilbo Baggins, joining Elijah Wood,...

Recently Peter Jackson and The Hobbit lost Robert Kazinski, the actor playing the dwarf Fili, when he had to return home [1] for personal reasons. Now that role has been recast with Dean O'Gorman, who is a New Zealand actor. Additionally, Lee Pace has been cast as the Elven King Thranduil; you might have seen him in Tarsem's film The Fall (he was the lead) and he's been in Pushing Daisies, The Resident and A Single Man. A bit more detail about Thranduil, and Peter Jackson's statement about casting both actors, is after the break. Here's what Peter Jackson had to say: Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Lee Pace has been cast as the Elven King Thranduil in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit! I think Pace is an underrated actor whose also been in films such as The Fall and The Good Shepherd, of course most you probably know him from the great TV series Pushing Daisies. It's so cool that he's been cast in this role, I'm excited to see him take on the character. I hope this leads him to doing more stuff.
Jackson announced the casting news along with another actor whose been cast in the film as well named Dean O'Gorman. O'Gorman will take on the role of Fili. I don't know much about what the actor has done, but Jackson is excited to have him on board. Here's the official announcement from the director,

It seems Jackson has been true to his word and wasted no time in replacing actor Rob Kazinsky(who had to leave the project due to personal reasons) as Fili, one half of the two youngest Dwarves in the group, Fili and Kili. I haven't heard of his replacement, Dean O'Gorman, but Jackson has the following to say.. “Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He's recently been in an excellent TV series down here called The Almighty Johnsons, and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year.
