The eligibility of documentaries for awardage from both that lusted after winged woman (Emmy) and the coveted naked man (Oscar) is a labyrinthine maze from which we would never exit were we to foolishly enter. In fact, someone needs to make a documentary about That to sort it all out. Documentaries leave strange crumbs all over both the big and small screens on their long walking journey through often complicated and extremely protacted "releases".
I bring this up because a portion of the Emmy nominations were announced today (like The Grammys there are hundreds of categories) in the non-fiction fields of news and documentary. I was surprised, for example, to see Semper Fi: Always Faithful, The Loving Story and We Were Here as nominees. You may recall they were all Oscar finalists (though not nominees) back in 2011 and now they're up for 2013 Emmys! Actual nominees from that Oscar year show up too,...

Good Morning! It really is an awesome morning with the striking down of Doma as unconstitutional and saying "Peace out, Prop 8!" I'm feeling all:
Turn on Logo for the latest on all these Supreme Court rulings.
Russell Brand was talking about out lesbian presenter Clare Balding on a radio show in the UK when he said he likes to help "test" lesbians.
I just do that with lesbians, like "come on, you’re not that lesbian. For heaven’s sake, you’re just being difficult now." She’s in a happy relationship, isn’t she? I won’t rest, until every lesbian relationship in Britain has been disrupted by an unwelcome boorish Essex boy.
I'm so sure that all the lesbians in the land are like "I guess I could try it with this loud, hairy British man."

Good morning!
The New York Times wonders if lesbian sex in literature and film is ever really that realistic. The writer finds that we're usually exploited.
The Australian interviewed Gigi Chao, who still loves her dad despite his trying to sell her to a man that could turn her straight. An excerpt:
I don't think you can be certain that homosexuality is something you are born with. I am more of the scientific point of view that sexuality and sexual identity are something that evolves. It is more of a fluid thing. It is like those fish that can change their gender on a whim. I think there is a fluidity in human sexual identity that can be affected by experiences in life. The 'born this way' argument is for Lady Gaga; I suppose it...

Katee Sackhoff talked with Collider about her bisexual psycho role in Sexy Evil Genius. She was asked if her character is actually crazy or just really good at manipulating her exes:
Isn’t that the question, though? Some of the craziest people I’ve met, in my life, are some of the most brilliant people I’ve met. It’s almost as if they get bored in their own brain and they have to come up with this craziness to stay interested in life. So, I don’t know. I still don’t know. I think that’s up to the viewer. I think there’s probably little bits of both inside of her, for sure.

Taking the stage in a Boy Scout uniform, pop icon Madonna called for the Boy Scouts to lift its ban on gays. “I think [the Boy Scouts] should change their stupid rules,” she said. She also called for an end to Lgbt bullying, spoke out in defense of imprisoned band Pussy Riot, and called for open dialogue between ideological opposites to end discrimination. Finally, she presented the Vito Russo award to Anderson Cooper. Calling him a “freedom fighter” and “a bad ass motherfucker,” she invited Cooper onstage so she could “grab [his] ass.

After ten days of film, I have compiled a list of the ten best at this year’s Toronto Lgbt film festival. Every bit as fearless, shameless, and timeless as the adverts suggest, Inside Out 2012 was an unmitigated success.
Honourable Mentions
Hit So Hard
Although the film initially struggles to find its objet d’art, it eventually concentrates on Schemel’s inherently engrossing story. With amazingly detailed file footage of Schemel’s personal and professional life, and a strangely hallucinogenic aesthetic, Hit So Hard is a powerful and personal documentary about a woman who’s unquestionably likewise.
Melting Away
With so much heart tugging and fifty different kinds of cheese, Melting Away eventually succeeds in its war of emotional attrition. We know exactly how the film is going to play out, and how Anna’s story will come to an end, but despite this, there’s still an inexplicable urge to cheer for her.

Wish Me Away
Directed by Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf
USA, 2011
For country superstar, Chely Wright, her art has always been cathartic. As a high-profile member of the Nashville country music community, she has had to hide her homosexuality in fear of scorn and rejection from the very people she held in the highest esteem – her peers, family, and fans. To truly articulate her tortured anima, Wright continually turned to her music as recompense, manifesting in profound, soulful pieces of expression. So it’s no surprise that in Wish Me Away, a documentary about her life and coming out, the artistry is equally lyrical.
The film documents the coming-out experience of Wright. Shot over a period of two years, the film, utilizing private video diaries, news reels, and unposed footage, details the intricacies of her childhood, rise to fame, and the emotional torment of her private life, while, at the same time,...

Los Angeles (Reuters) - Chely Wright, the first mainstream country performer to come out as lesbian, married her partner, activist Lauren Blitzer, on Saturday in Connecticut, People magazine reported.
Wright, 40, met Blitzer, 30, soon after the singer's 2010 announcement that she is a lesbian.
Named the top new female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1995, Wright hid her homosexuality for years, believing it would hurt her career in the traditionally conservative country music community.
"They would rather you were a drug addict than be gay," she told reporters at the time of her coming-out, which is chronicled in the upcoming documentary "Wish Me Away."
Both a reverend and a rabbi presided over the weekend ceremonies at Blitzer's aunt's home with more than 200 guests in attendance. Wright is Christian, and Blitzer is Jewish.
The women wore white wedding gowns and skipped the veils. Wright explained to People, "We like our hair too much!

La Film Fest has wrapped on downtown Los Angeles with the jury award for Best Documentary Feature going to Beverly Kopf and Bobbie Birleffi's lesbian identity doc Wish Me Away about country singer Chely Wright. While we have yet to catch this highly praised film, here is a quick look at a few of the other docs that played in competition at this year's fest: Anayansi Prado's Paraiso For Sale is a remarkably well put together doc about an island off the coast of Panama called Bocas Del Toro that has become a hot bed for American retirees. Bocas is just one of many places in Central America that is being faced with a wide array of problems as the influx of foreign money...

Beginning in downtown Los Angeles with Richard Linklater’s well-received “Bernie” on June 16, and wrapping up on June 26 with “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” the 2011 Laff managed to infuse its festival with the key ingredients of celebration and levity that make it one of the most enjoyable festivals on the planet.
Free outdoor screenings of classic comedies and contemporary documentaries, guest directors and artists-in-residence such as Guillermo del Toro and Erykah Badu, conversations and chats with Julie Taymor, James Franco, Jack Black and Shirley Maclaine, and a lounge sponsored by Jameson whiskey, all added up to another winning festival, the last planned under Dawn Hudson’s leadership of Film Independent.
With the two top juried awards each carrying a $15,000 cash prize for that film’s director, there is always weighted attention paid to the winners.

This year's Los Angeles Film Festival, running through June 26, opens tonight with the latest from Richard Linklater, and Steven Zeitchik talks with him for the Los Angeles Times: "'It was my most difficult one to get made,' he said flatly. 'It took 12 years to happen, and even then it was tough. People can say shooting in 22 days makes a movie better. It doesn't.' … Bernie is a shaggy, idiosyncratic work, possibly the strangest yet in a career full of strangeness. Set in the small town of Carthage, Texas, it tells of an effeminate, musical-loving mortician named Bernie Tiede [Jack Black] who befriends and then commits a horrible crime against a repressed wealthy matriarch [Shirley MacLaine], leaving him to face the wrath of a local prosecutor [Matthew McConaughey]. The movie is a dramatization of an actual case — the script was based on a 1998 Texas Monthly article about Tiede, and Linklater, who attended Tiede's trial,...

Wish Me Away tells the raw and honest story of country music singer Chely Wright and her struggle to come to terms with her true identity while not losing her family, friends, and career in the process. The film follows Wright as she makes the decision to come out, not just to her fans and public, but also to those closest to her and in many ways, herself. We watch as Wright and her team coordinate her public “coming out,” while at the same time Wright finally tells her family and close friends the truth about herself.

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. Award-winning filmmakers Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf’s documentary Wish Me Away charts the emotional journey of country music star Chely Wright as she risks her career, family and image in an attempt to live an “authentic life” as an openly gay woman. Birleffi and Kopf, both professional and personal partners, spent three years on the film, which charts Wright’s “pursuit and rise to fame in Nashville, a hidden network of secrets and lies, her emotional unraveling and eventual rebirth.” Featuring interviews with Wright’s friends, family, confidants and industry insiders, the film also includes Wright’s private video diaries.
We visited the filmmakers at their Manhattan studio to discuss the process of making the film and working with Wright, why the documentary is relevant in today’s political climate, and their latest fundraising efforts to finish the film.
