Needless to say that I had never heard about this 2009 Thai horror movie titled "Mahalai Sayongkwan" (aka "Haunted Universities" prior to sitting down to watch it here late in 2022. I stumbled upon the movie by random chance, and seeing it was a Thai horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give directors Bunjong Sinthanamongkolkul and Sutthiporn Tubtim's movie a chance.
But I have to say that the movie's script and storyline felt incredibly sluggish and amateurish. The events in the narrative were predictable, lacked any scares or shocks, and was just held back by acting performances that didn't come off as being believable or energetic.
The entire movie was permeated by a sense of amateurish horror that was cashing in on every single Asian horror trope out there. And that didn't exactly make for a particularly thrilling or enjoyable movie. And the fact that the movie was totally devoid of anything scary or spooky just didn't help to make this a watchable horror movie.
The acting performances in "Mahalai Sayongkwan" were not convincing, and the dialogue and acting performances felt sluggish and forced. It didn't make for an enjoyable viewing experience, and it wasn't furthering an already tarnished storyline.
If you enjoy Asian horror movies, do yourself a favor and don't waste your time, money or effort on "Mahalai Sayongkwan".
My rating of "Mahalai Sayongkwan" lands on a two out of ten stars.
