La defense du drapeau review

Simple but amateurish war scene in which none of the participants seem quite sure what they're supposed to be doing.

La défense du drapeau (1897)

This here is a very fascinating and entertaining film from the Lumiere Brothers that shows them getting away from the actuality films and entertaining scripted material. The camera is set up to the right and we get a battle scene going on. As the title suggests, the soldiers are defending the French flag. Throughout the 55-second running time we see several men shot, wounded and for the most part it's a pretty entertaining battle. Of course, over a decade later D.W. Griffith would perfect the battle sequences with films like THE BIRTH OF A NATION but what we have here is certainly well-done for the era and it has to be one of the earliest examples of a staged battle sequence. Film buffs will certainly enjoy this early movie.
