In 2005, Hamilton and Girls5Eva star Renee Elise Goldsberry went back home to Chicago to visit her dad. She accompanied him to church, where the reverend made a to-do of her presence. “We have a guest,” he announced to the congregation, and then proceeded to tick off her professional accomplishments, which, at that point, included a soap opera and a stint on Broadway.
Goldsberry didn’t immediately recognize herself in the introduction. “I’m looking around, like, “Who’s in the house when I’m here?” she says. “Because the year I had, I’d had two very painful miscarriages. One was in the second trimester. It was terribly painful.”
She stood up and waved, nevertheless, but it served as a stark reminder that describing her as a Tony winner or a Grammy winner or whatever else her IMDb profile offers is not fully representative of who she is. “And quite honestly,...

The comedy series Survival of the Thickest, created by Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Wittell (New Girl), hasn’t just survived, but thrived — and it’s headed for a second season.
Survival of the Thickest, the first season of which dropped July 2023, is a story only Buteau can tell. Inspired by her acclaimed book of essays of the same name, the first eight episodes followed Mavis Beaumont (played by Buteau), a stylist whose life is blown up after she catches her love and work partner in bed with another woman. We’re just along for the ride as Mavis, with the help of her besties, picks up the pieces (including plenty of pieces of big-budget designer swag) and hustles to rebuild her career on her own terms, while also creating opportunities for folks who’ve been overlooked by the fashion world for too long, and getting back out there in the...

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.
Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.
Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

Netflix has been slowly opening up on its viewership data on many of its titles, but third-party companies like PlumResearch can provide more significant insights into how well shows are doing through different lenses. Below, they put four Netflix shows up against each other.
We’ve featured PlumResearch data before. You may recall that we recently talked about some of the reasons Sweet Magnolias got renewed for a fourth season. We also featured them more recently with their Wrapped feature, allowing you to see what you’ve watched over the past 12 months.
This latest data dump gives us data for four shows from this year, and all have very different fates. One Piece was renewed almost instantaneously, Glamorous was sadly canceled following the end of the strikes, Survival of the Thickest is still awaiting an official renewal, and Beef may be a limited series but may also come back.

When it really wants to, Netflix does a great job at letting people know what TV shows it has to offer. Unfortunately, with the never-ending wave of new shows constantly arriving, high-profile creators on the creative roster, and shifts in the streaming wars and algorithms that can upend viewer attention at any moment, there always seem to be series that fall between the cracks.

It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.”
At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent.
Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.”
“The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S. and Canada.

Television comedies have come a long way from the multi-camera sitcoms of the 1950s. The streaming era has given writers the ability to explore different ways to tell their stories beyond the traditional structure of network comedies. Shows like The Bear, Barry, Russian Doll, WandaVision, and Ted Lasso blur the lines between drama and comedy with their runtimes and plotlines and show us how necessary it is for TV to be a flexible and adaptable artform. But for all of the great shows that this era of television has given us, the push for shows to be shorter and more bingeable has also made studios lose sight of what has been drawing people to comedies for decades.
Even in the streaming era, network comedies can regularly be found in the trending section on streaming services, and these companies know that people are drawn to these longer comedy series. When New Girl...

Dearest gentle readers, it’s a big day for the Bridgerton-verse!
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has officially been crowned one of Netflix’s most popular English-language TV series of all time. With 80.3M views to date, the prequel series now sits at No. 10, replacing The Watcher.
Since Netflix only releases viewership numbers for the Top 10 shows each week, it’s unclear how many views the series received during the week of July 17 to July 23 to push it over the edge. The series hasn’t appeared in the weekly Top 10 since June.
Queen Charlotte now joins both seasons of Bridgerton on the honor list (Season 1 sits at No. 4 while Season 2 is No. 8).
This was made possible after Netflix adjusted its viewership metrics in June. At the eleventh hour for Queen Charlotte, the streamer extended its measurement window from 28 days to 91 days, giving the series plenty of time to make it...

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

After two weeks reigning over Netflix’s English-language series, Season 3 of The Witcher has been dethroned. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 is the new champ for the week of July 10 to July 16 with 8.3M views across five episodes.
The first five episodes hit Netflix on July 6 and debuted at No. 2 on the list last week. The latter half of the season is set to release in August.
Audiences were also catching up with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s Mickey Haller in Season 1 of the legal drama, which soared to No. 5 on the English-language list with 3.4M views.
The Witcher didn’t fall far from its top spot, though it did experience a fairly significant decrease in viewership week-over-week. The first half of Season 3 is currently sitting in second place with 6.7M views, which is about half of the week prior’s nearly 14M views.

Season 2 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” has taken the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 English-Language TV chart following the release of Part one on July 6. During the July 10-16 viewing window, the first half of the season earned 8.3 million total views and 35.3 million hours viewed. Netflix recently began sharing the total views data in the official top 10 chart, which is calculated by dividing the hours viewed by total run time — which in this case, is 4.14 hours. Season 1 also joined the list of titles at No. 5 with 3.4 million total views. The second half of Season 2 is expected to arrive on Aug. 3, meaning the show could experience another momentum next month.

Michelle Buteau’s new TV series, adapted from her books of essays, is a refreshing take on our run-of-the-mill rom-com. The show is energetic and diverse—exactly the kind of thing Netflix needs to make more of! It is unfortunate that we got only eight short episodes of this easy-breezy binge-watch, so it would be so fantastic to see a second season real soon. Netflix hasn’t renewed the hot new show just yet, but we can imagine, with the majorly positive response it’s received, we’re likely to get a second season sooner than later. We’re so tired of seeing the same beauty standards and non-diverse media that we should definitely be encouraging such shows to be brought to the limelight and renewed. If you haven’t seen the show yet and just stumbled upon this article, check out our full review for reasons to watch Survival Of The Thickest.

Four simultaneous protests occurred in New York City on Friday, the first day of the SAG-AFTRA strike, with Writers Guild, IATSE, local Democratic Socialists of America members and more from other unions joining in on the picket lines and similar protests occurring in Los Angeles.
Amid beating, hot sun and spurts of rain, picketers rallied in front of the Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery Offices near Union Square, Amazon and HBO in Hudson Yards, Paramount in Times Square and NBCUniversal at 30 Rock.
Among the hundreds that walked the New York picket lines Friday were Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, Survival of the Thickest’s Peppermint and Sagan Chen, Numb3rs’ David Krumholtz, Grounded for Life’s Kevin Corrigan, Severance stars Zach Cherry and Jen Tullock, as well as Runaway’s actors Ariela Barer and Clarissa Thibeaux.

When Mavis (Michelle Buteau) discovers her boyfriend of five years has been unfaithful, what stings almost as much as the betrayal is the narrative she imagines surrounding it. “If someone cheats on Halle Berry, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, how that man cheat on Halle Berry?'” she laments. “But if someone cheats on someone like me, a thick girl with problem areas? They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I get it.'”
And though her best friend, Khalil (Tone Bell), gently pushes back on that “silly-ass narrative,” Mavis isn’t entirely wrong: Plus-sized women, and indeed all those who fall outside the straight-cis-white-skinny box, do tend to go ignored or sidelined or disrespected in love stories. Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest is a welcome and too-rare exception — a comedy that puts Mavis front and center as a worthy heroine, with mostly enjoyable results.

Although there’s nothing that really fits the bill when it comes to Michelle Buteau’s new rom-com series Survival Of The Thickest, we’ve tried to make a compilation of shows that may scratch that itch the show left behind. This show is witty, comedic, emotional, and inclusive, and even tackles serious issues in the perfect way, leaving no crumbs. It’s like watching a 30-something coming-of-age show about a plus-size black woman trying to make it big in the looming fashion industry. Michelle is especially charismatic, even as she plays a loud and often clumsy protagonist. It’s an endearing quality, unlike some similar leads who come across as obnoxious and living in a fairy tale. While Netflix alone brings us a smorgasbord of shows that fit this category of “period time” cravings with romance, fashion, and all things cozy, they’re usually hit or miss. So let...

Mavis Beaumont (Michelle Buteau) is confident and in charge from the very first scene in Survival of the Thickest. She breezily weaves through a high-fashion photoshoot, offering words of encouragement to nervous models and stepping in with a brilliant idea when one setup just doesn’t work. When her hot photographer boyfriend turns the camera on her, she knows just what to do, and he happily flaunts their relationship and supports her on set. It doesn’t even matter that that same boyfriend is discovered to be a lying cheater just a few scenes later — the upbeat details of that opening sequence are ones that are rarely afforded to “plus-sized” (blech) women on TV, and they set the tone for an entire series focused on being a joyful and confident fat girl.

We wouldn’t be wrong to think Khalil is definitely everyone’s new favorite bestie in town. He’s funny, he’s understanding, he’s nice, and he’s also an artist! What more could a girl want in a best friend? And yes, he pulls off a mean fit and is very charming. Unlike the usual best friend-to-lover trope, we get to see Khalil grow as a separate person from Mavis, which is fantastic. We don’t get the crap about him being blind to how stunning she was the whole time, until a breakup or something like that woke him up from his daze, and now all he can think about is his best friend. Instead, we get a wonderfully supportive best friend who knows all the dirty details and still has boundaries.
Spoilers Ahead
Khalil, played by Tone Bell, is a simple character with many layers that he hides behind.

Netflix’s new rom-com TV show is here, and it’s definitely one of the better ones on the platform. It’s an eight-part series of 30-minute episodes that are easily binge-able within a day, especially if you’re on the lookout for something fun and energizing. This is the kind of rom-com we’re looking for on Netflix every day. Survival Of The Thickest is the full package (if you know what I mean), and it’s delivering from start to finish. As someone who isn’t a big fan of comedy or standup, this show had just the right amount of humor mixed in with the serious issues, a pinch of romance, and adorable fashion to make a perfect balance (sounds like I’m describing the making of the Powerpuffs). With no prior knowledge of Michelle Buteau, I was absolutely hooked on her jokes and comic timing. Just like her fashion choices, which are boisterous, the show is a perfect reflection of who she really is. Michelle is the star of the show for sure, and I’d be happy to keep coming back, even if it’s just to feel the positive, uplifting energy she radiates.

There were many new entries into the Netflix Top 10 film chart for the week of July 3, some new seasons of familiar TV series, as well as a new comedy movie. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Chris Hemsworth‘s action-thriller “Extraction 2” has been dominating the English movie charts for weeks, but it was bumped by the new action-comedy “The Out-Laws,” starring Adam Devine, Nina Dobrev, Ellen Barkin and Pierce Brosnan. It racked up 19.6 million views since debuting on the streamer to take the #1 spot, the most-watched movie in the United States and over forty other countries (but not the UK or Canada).

Bird Box: Barcelona, the NFL docuseries Quarterback, the third season of Sweet Magnolias and Jamie Foxx starrer They Cloned Tyrone are among the new projects debuting on Netflix in July

Dear readers, stay safe out there. Summer is barely a few weeks underway, and the calamities just keep stacking up. Wildfires are engulfing Canada and sending toxic air across the northern United States. The Supreme Court won’t let anything stop them from protecting white America — not logic, reason, or even cases rooted in things that actually happened. And, as I write this, we’re only a few short weeks from the Emmy nominations, where voters are almost assuredly going to give 15-25 precious and prestigious nominations to the trainwreck that is “Ted Lasso” Season 3. Is it better to stay inside with bad TV but better air, or venture outside, where it’s still summer but the act of breathing may cause you to pass out.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger first announced his new TV series Fubar, he sold it as “another big action-comedy like True Lies.” There’s just one problem with that statement: True Lies was actually good. A few of the shots are standard-issue: Kit Connor’s Nick Nelson looking for all the world like the golden retriever that he is, Joe Locke’s Charlie Spring gazing, obviously, at his newly minted boyfriend in the halls of Truham, Tobie Donovan’s Isaac Henderson loading up on reading material in his happy place.
