- Season 10 kicks off with a new theme of "paying it forward" and 21 contestant hopefuls vying for a spot at the ranch. With obesity now one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States, "The Biggest Loser" wanted to broaden their reach this season, pay it forward and motivate communities - not just contestants - to get healthy. Trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels and host Alison Sweeney travel to seven cities in the premiere episode, with each trainer leading community fitness challenges like a one-mile race or a 500 step-up competition. In each of the seven cities - Detroit, Los Angeles, Portland, Atlanta, Phoenix, Oklahoma City and Boston - there will also be three contestant hopefuls competing in the challenges. The two candidates who complete their fitness challenge first win a spot at the ranch. Those who don't make it will get a chance to vie for a spot on the show in a later episode.—NBC Publicity
- The theme for this, the tenth season, is "pay it forward" where trainers, Bob and Jillian, will not only assist the contestants on the ranch in their weight loss goals, but communities across America, where two-thirds of the population are now considered obese. Alison, Bob and Jillian travel to seven cities across the continental US - Detroit, Los Angeles, Portland, Atlanta, Phoenix, Oklahoma City and Boston - where three potential contestants in each city weigh-in, talk candidly about the underlying reasons for their weight problems, and then compete in a race (in some cities it will be doing five hundred step-ups, in others it will be running one mile) against each other, the top two finishers in each city automatically becoming contestants on the ranch. Those top two finishers from each city form a team on the ranch. But will a third place finish be the end of the "Biggest Loser" road for those remaining seven?—Huggo
- The season starts with Bob and Jillian telling us this season is "all about Paying It Forward." The show will go to seven cities, with three hopefuls competing for two spots on the show.
The first city is Detroit and Alison stands in front of a Ford plant and tells us a few stats regarding obesity. After Bob works out the crowd we meet hopefuls Jesse, Sophia and Aaron. Jesse is a 27-yeard Minnesotan whose life is being ruined by his weight. He weighs-in in front of the crowd at 381 pounds. Sophia is 28 and has been having more difficulty with her weight since her brother died in a car accident. Sophia is 272 pounds. Aaron, 29, is from Ohio and believes the traits that caused his father's alcoholism have manifested themselves in his issue with weight. Aaron is 468 pounds.
The challenge to determine out two contestants from Detroit is steps. The first two to reach 500 steps are headed to the ranch. Sophia and Jesse are the top-2 and become the orange team this season. Bob takes Aaron aside and tells him he still needs to put in the work despite missing the show.
We move to Los Angeles. Alison and Jillian introduce Ada, Adam and Montina. Adam is 26 and has always struggled with his weight. In July Adam's mother passed away. She died from complications related to obesity and he does not want to go down that same path. Adam weighs in at 402 pounds. Ada, 27, has had two siblings pass away and her parents clearly blame her for the drowning death of one of them. She weighs in at 258. Montina is 35 and a background vocalist for Beyonce. She feels like her weight has hurt her marketability. Montina is 287 pounds. This group will also do the 500-step challenge. Ada and Adam win the challenge and become the blue team.
In Portland Season 7 contestant Mike introduces Bob and we meet hopefuls Corey, Burgandy and Tina. Burgandy is 35-year old mother of five who feels she has been focusing too much on her family and not enough on herself. She weighs in at 231. Corey is a 26-year old life coach who thinks his weight his impacting his marriage. Corey is 391 pounds. Tina, 58, is a grandmother who has been obese for 16 years and believes a cheating husband is responsible for some of her self-esteem issues. She is 263 pounds. The Portland challenge will be a one-mile run, with the first two across the finish line reaching the show. Burgandy wins rather comfortably and it looks for a moment she will be jointed by Corey. But just 20 yards from the finish his body gives up on him and this allows Tin to take the final spot. Burgandy and Tin will be the purple team.
Up next is Atlanta. Alison and Jillian give us a few sobering stats before we meet our Georgia hopefuls Patrick, Anna and Rick. Anna is a 39-year old whose three-year old son died of cancer. She weighs in at 330 pounds. Rick is 54, a parent and grandparent who wants to be around for his family. He weighs-in at 350. Patrick talks about his wife and two kids being his motivation before weighing in at 400. The Atlanta challenge is also a one-mile run with top-2 going to the ranch. Ricks wins going away, followed by Patrick. They become the green team.
In Phoenix Alison and Bob introduce us to Jessica, Mark and Shanna. Jessica, 26, has had trouble with a mother who sounds borderline abusive. Jessica starts at 282. Mark is a 30-year old bartender from Jersey who started putting on weight once he quit football. Mark weighs in at 421. Shanna, 38, has a husband and four children and has recently beaten breast cancer. She is 242 pounds. The Phoenix challenge is the one-mile run. Jessica and Mark grab the two spots and become the red team.
Oklahoma City is our next stop. Former winner Danny (Season 8) introduces Bob and we meet hopefuls Allie, Lisa and Sandy. Allie is 24 and tells us about a failed gastric band surgery experience. She is 322 pounds. Lisa, 31, weighs in at 302 pounds. Sandy is 259 pounds and recently her brother died soon after trying out for the show. The 500-step challenge will determine our Oklahoma City team. Allie wins and is joined by Lisa to form the pink team.
The last city is Boston. Season 5 finalist Mark introduces contestants Frado, Elizabeth and Brendan. Brendan is a 32-year old special education teacher who blames his weight for the loss of his fiancé. He weighs in at 362. Elizabeth, 30, is a divorcee who was in an abusive marriage. She will start at 244. Frado, 43, is a diabetic who has been told he might not have long to live if he doesn't lose weight. Frado is 367 pounds. 500 steps is our challenge. Brendan and Frado take the two spots (helped by Elizabeth not being able to finish and being taken to the hospital) and become the black team.
