We can’t stop here! This is Bear Country! While Russell Crowe passes the Gladiator torch to Paul Mescal for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor is getting behind the bar for Derrick Borte’s upcoming action-thriller Bear Country. The project marks another collaboration between Crowe and Borte after teaming up for Unhinged, a thriller starring Crowe as an unstable man obsessed with a woman after a spat of road rage.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bear Country finds Crowe playing an aging but redoubtable club owner, Manco Kapak, whom a masked gunman robs. When the robbery sidelines his retirement plans and his girlfriend grows distant, his aspirations to live a quiet life shatter like glass breaking against a hardwood floor. As cartel bosses harass Manco and a young status seeker aims to purchase the club, Kapak must decide how to show them who the boss is.

Denny Laine, co-founder of Wings and The Moody Blues, has died at the age of 79 after a lengthy battle with interstitial lung disease.
Laine’s wife, Elizabeth Hines, announced the news via Facebook on Tuesday, December 5th. “My darling husband passed away peacefully early this morning. I was at his bedside, holding his hand as I played his favorite Christmas songs for him,” she wrote. “He’s been singing Christmas songs the past few weeks and I continued to play Christmas songs while he’s been in ICU on a ventilator this past week.”
Hines continued, “He and I both believed he would overcome his health setbacks and return to the rehabilitation center and eventually home. Unfortunately, his lung disease, Interstitial Lung Disease (Ild), is unpredictable and aggressive; each infection weakened and damaged his lungs.” See the full statement below.

Paul McCartney said one of his Wings songs sold 100,000 copies a day. He contrasted this with record sales in the modern music industry. While the tune in question was a massive hit in the United Kingdom, it made no impact whatsoever in the United States.
Paul McCartney got to experience the ‘best’ of the music industry through 1 of his songs
During a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Paul discussed music sales. “The scene has changed, but it doesn’t disturb me, because I had the best of it — selling 100,000 a day on something like ‘Mull of Kintyre.’ I’ve had the joy of that.
“If I don’t have it now, it’s not just about me,” he added. “All of my contemporaries, who are still pretty cool, don’t have it, because things have moved on. And you know what? We had it. And it was great.”

Someone told Paul McCartney that Ram was great. A modern rock star revealed his opinion of the album. Ram produced a No. 1 single in the United States but not in the United Kingdom.
Paul McCartney‘s Ram received negative feedback upon its release. Subsequently, Paul discussed how he reacted to the reviews. Notably, a modern rock star is a huge fan of Ram, even though he thinks it’s uneven.
Paul McCartney said ‘Ram’ received a lot of ‘bum notices’ but a skier he met liked it
During a 1974 interview with Rolling Stone, Paul was asked if he missed bouncing ideas off The Beatles. “Sometimes now I mainly bounce off myself,” he said. “I do that more now, call it what you will — maturity? Paul McCartney said his and Wing’ “Let Me Roll It” is mostly ‘Lennon-esque” because of what he calls the “bog echo.” John Lennon liked using the effect on his vocals.

In his book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that he often used an echo effect in the recording studio. He called it “bog echo” because it’s like the echo in a toilet, which British people call a “bog.”
Apparently, it was a universal term in the studio. Paul would sometimes shout up to the control room and ask, “Can we have the bog echo, please?” Whoever was there would ask, “Do you want it at 7.5 inches per second or 15 inches per second?” Paul would say, “We don’t know. Play them both.

Paul McCartney revealed he sometimes doesn’t perform the second verse of Wings’ “Junior’s Farm.” He calls the verse Richard Nixon’s “Mafia send-off.” Here’s what the singer-songwriter said about the song.
Paul McCartney and Wings | Michael Putland/Getty Images The singer-songwriter escaped to his farm in Scotland following The Beatles’ split
After Paul and his first wife, Linda, eloped, they went to the farm Paul had acquired in Scotland a few years before. They craved privacy and quiet during one of the most stressful times in their lives. The Beatles were breaking up. Initially, Paul hadn’t been keen to go to Scotland, but Linda was, and eventually, he realized it was worth it.

Paul McCartney loved writing songs with John Lennon. However, if he had to choose one of the most exciting things about their time as songwriter partners, Paul said they came at songs from different angles. They were opposites most of the time but complimented each other.
Paul McCartney and John Lennon | Icon and Image/Getty Images Paul McCartney said there was a grey area in writing songs with John Lennon
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that no one was interested in his songs until he met John. In The Beatles’ early days, the songwriting pair wrote at least one song daily and only came close to a dry songwriting session once.
A dry songwriting session was rare for Paul and John because they knew how to work together. If one were stuck, the other would know how to help. “We could suggest the way out of the maze to each other,...

Paul McCartney disagrees with fans who think a London Town track sounds “Lennon-esque.” The singer-songwriter wasn’t consciously trying to sound like his former bandmate and fellow Beatle, John Lennon.
Paul McCartney | Colin McConnell/Getty Images Paul McCartney said a ‘London Town’ track can have a couple of different meanings
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul spoke about Wings’ London Town track, “I’m Carrying.” He explained that “carrying” could be taken in many different ways. For instance, he said he still carries some hefty psychological baggage from being in The Beatles.
Paul wrote, “People say, ‘What does this song mean?’ and I say, ‘Well, it’s up to you.’ It can mean a million things. What am I carrying here? I kind of make it clear that it’s packages. So I’m like Dapper Dan, with my carnation hidden by the packages. I’m bringing presents for you,...

Paul McCartney proved his songwriting prowess with The Beatles. He was embarrassed to ask John Lennon to collaborate on “Come Together,” but Macca had no trouble asking for help when he formed Wings. Denny Laine got the call and jumped at the chance to work with Paul. Decades after Wings split up, Laine is still making music and touring to support it.

Heading toward the Oscars next Sunday, the BAFTAs mark the last of the Oscar precursor award shows, timed right when Oscar voters are filling out their ballots (due February 4). Behind the scenes, Oscar campaigners took full advantage by having their winners send messages to the Academy, both overt and subliminal. But it’s not all in their control.
While Netflix’s awards wranglers made sure that “The Irishman” producer Robert De Niro presented an award to Renée Zellweger, they could not control several jokes made at the lengthy movie’s expense by host Graham Norton, who suggested “there’s more than one ‘Irishman’ here tonight who seems to go on and on.”
The BAFTAs often presage Oscar winners, but not always. Last year, the BAFTAs favored “Roma” and “The Favourite” over “Green Book.” The complete BAFTA winners list from this year is here.

Chicago – The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as told in Charles Dicken’s classic “A Christmas Carol,” seems to be the one constant that survives the commercialization of the holiday season. The story of Scrooge’s creation is told with expressive sentimentality in “The Man Who Invented Christmas.”

This sweltering evening in London town saw the return of one of the brightest stars in the cinematic sky. Director Edgar Wright brought his latest film to the capital and we were there to meet him and the cast on the red carpet of Baby Driver.
The new film from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz man Edgar Wright stars Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, Cj Jones, Jon Bernthal, Lanny Joon, and Paul Williams which is a ridiculously good cast. They are elevated in the film by Baby’s Driver secret weapon – the soundtrack. You can see the full tracklist below, and will no doubt have enjoyed the kinetically pleasing trailers. Wright’s command of editing and his keen ear for cinematically apposite music is put to full use in the film, and you can read our 5 star review of the film right here.

A teenager learns about life from his punk idol Joe Strummer, and Jonathan Rhys Myers kills it as they rock the Casbah together. London Town is a romance that takes place during a defining moment in history -- the time in late-'70s England when the punk scene was personified by vagabond youths living in "squats," skinheads, the Sex Pistols with their "Anarchy in the U.K.," and the Clash. The latter's "politicized lyrics, musical influences from reggae,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.

The Clash’s frontman Joe Strummer had a seismic impact on music as well as the attitudes of impressionable youth. “What’s more important: the truth or freedom from it?” could be a question raised as a summary of U.K. punk sensation The Clash, whose music and aesthetics are the backdrop of director Derrick Borte‘s music drama London Town. While The Clash themselves are featured — including Jonathan Rhys Meyers as frontman Joe Strummer — they seem to be a backdrop for a coming-of-age tale about a boy named Johnny (Daniel Huttlestone) who finds inspiration and enlightenment through the band’s rebellious stanzas.
Whether or not the film itself will capture the actual spirit of the punk scene, or merely paint a romanticized version of it is yet to be seen. However, the trailer promises a killer soundtrack and what looks to be a couple of captivating performances. See the trailer below for the film that also stars Dougray Scott, Natascha McElhone, and Tom Hughes.

Over the years, several movie characters have found themselves instantly falling in love with a person because of their cool taste in music, from Natalie Portman changing Zach Braff’s life with The Shins to Joseph Gordon Levitt getting his mind blown when Zooey Deschanel says she likes The Smiths, but director Derrick Borte’s London Town looks like it’s an entire movie based on that idea. This trailer features Daniel Huttlestone as an innocent kid in ‘70s England who asks a cool girl what she’s listening to on the train. After some playful banter, she tells him: The Clash. From there, the kid dyes his hair, argues with his dad, starts hanging around with some punks, and eventually he even meets Joe Strummer himself—played here by Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
