The 2014 march of outstanding documentaries about artists continues on with the best of the impressive group of feature films. But this artist’s means of expression are not the brush as in Tim”S Vermeer or still photography as seen in Finding Vivian Maier or cinema itself (along with many superb illustrators) in Jodoworsky’S Dune. Nope, this artist’s (and after viewing this film, that title is not up for debate) means of expression were words with typewriters, computer keyboards, and his own voice utilized instead of brushes on canvas or cameras. The subject of Steve James’s (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters) new feature documentary is celebrated, Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert. He had been a fixture on TV screens for decades, discussing and debating current movies usually with Gene Siskel, so you may think that you know everything about good ole’ “Uncle Rog”. But though he left...

After recent reports that PBS' Ebert Presents At the Movies was in financial trouble, executive producer Roger Ebert has now announced that the film review television series will be going on hiatus while Ebert and his wife/co-producer Chaz Ebert find additional funding. "This move is necessary to allow the public television stations that carry our show to plan their programs for the beginning of the new year," he wrote on his blog. "We held off as long as possible but we had to give notice today." At the Movies debuted in January 2011 with hosts Christy Lemire, who writes for the Associated Press, and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, who writes for the Chicago Reader and Mubi. The show is scheduled to go on hiatus at the end of December, by which point it will have produced 50 episodes. Early last month, Ebert took to his blog [2] to discuss...

Chicago — Movie critic Roger Ebert says the public television program "Ebert Presents: At The Movies" will go on hiatus at the end of December.

You've got to hand it to Roger Ebert. The critic who became famous for talking about and arguing over movies on television with his partner, Gene Siskel, has been forcibly removed from the airways thanks to a surgery for thyroid cancer that left him without a throat or a voice. But Ebert, who still writes for the Chicago Sun-Times and regularly on his blog, has kept his benchmark At The Movies program on the air even after it was cancelled in 2010. Hosted by Christy Lemire and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, Ebert Presents: At The Movies adopts the "thumbs up/thumbs down" rating system and balcony seating familiar from the original At The Movies, but with Ebert and his wife Chaz operating behind the scenes to keep the show going. And yet now, even with the Eberts working their hardest, At The Movies may not make it. On his blog today Ebert wrote...

Roger Ebert, returning to television tonight with "Roger Ebert's Presents At the Movies," unveiled a new prosthetic chin he will wear during his segments on the show. "I will wear the prosthesis on the new television show," Ebert wrote on his blog. "That's not to fool anyone, because my appearance is widely known. It will be used in a medium shot of me working in my office, and will be a pleasant reminder of the person I was for 64 years. Symbolically, it's as if my...
