In honor of the recent release of ‘The Greatest Showman‘, we take a look back at one of the more under-seen musicals of the last decade, John Carney‘s ‘Once‘.
Once (2007)
Director/Screenwriter: John Carney
He (Glen Hansard), is a street guitarist/songwriter who works as a vacuum-cleaner repairman in his father’s shop in Dublin. One night, He meets She (Marketa Irglova) a young Czech pianist, who hears him playing, and she has a vacuum that needs repairing. She’s poor, and doesn’t own a piano, but she practices at the display at a local music store, and one day, He goes with her one day, guitar in hand… What happens next in John Carney’s independent musical ‘Once,’ cannot be described properly using detailed minutia. The word that keeps popping in my head to describe what happens is “magical,” and yet, that word still feels inappropriate. There is,...

The four-track Ep will feature three new songs from Hansard as well as the Springsteen cover/title track. Oscar-winning Irish folk musician Glen Hansard on Monday evening returned to Chicago's Millennium Park -- where he last played a show in support of Low two years ago.
Amid the foggy evening at the park's Jay Pritzker Pavilion stage, Hansard -- who leads The Frames and is one half of The Swell Season -- played songs off both last year's debut solo record "Rhythm and Repose" and was also joined on stage by Lisa Hannigan, a former member of fellow Irishman Damien Rice's band.
Hansard is a regular performer in Chicago, most recently at the Hideout Block Party last fall, and previously told HuffPost he sees the Windy City as "a city where people are quietly getting on with their work. I have always found it hugely inspiring."

Owls of the Swamp, the musical moniker of Australian multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Pete Uhlenbruch, continues to reach the ever-growing expectation for earnest vocals, adept guitar-picking and vivid storytelling with latest single “The Hypnotist.” The song, which features background vocals from The Swell Season’s Marketa Irglova, illustrates the tale of a hypnotist and his relationship with a long-lost lover. The single marks Uhlenbruch’s first since 2011’s Go With River, and fans will hope it is a sign of more content to come. Check out “The Hypnotist” in the player below. Glen Hansard, the male half of The Swell Season and charismatic frontman of The Frames, is going solo. Rhythm And Repose, his first solo record, will be released June 19 on Anti- Records. He’ll mark its availability with four—count ’em, four—tour dates, including a stop at the Vic in Chicago June 26. Rhythm And Repose supposedly sprang from Hansard’s stint living in New York City, rather than in his native Ireland, for the past year and a half. His solo work is also featured on the soundtrack for some movie called The Hunger Games, which probably ...

With yesterday’s announcement that tickets for The Hunger Games were officially on sale (and billboards for the films starting to pop up), Mockingjays everywhere rushed to their computers to buy their ticket to finally watch Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), Liam Hemsworth (Gale) and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) bring the book series to the big screen. As we get closer to The Hunger Games release, we also got the film’s full soundtrack listing which revealed the artists that would be creating the musical landscape of Panem. Poised to be one of the next huge book-to-screen franchises, scoring a spot on the soundtrack was a coveted position and the artists that made the final track listing do not disappoint. The stripped-down sound of artists like singer/songwriter Glen Hansard (best known as the other half of The Swell Season) and alt-rock band The Decemberists (whose track “One Engine” is already available) are what you would expect from the series...

Musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová's incredible talent and chemistry was impossible to ignore in their fantastic, Oscar-winning "Once." Despite the title of their 2006 musical film, Hansard and Irglova's presence in the public eye was not a one-time affair, thankfully. The Swell Season duo make their triumphant big-screen return in a new documentary titled, appropriately enough, "The Swell Season." It's already playing in theaters in Los Angeles, and it hits limited release in New York City today (October 21), with a wider release to follow. If you're a fan of the musicians, this doc is a can't miss. Check out an exclusive clip from the film below.

[With the film extending its run in Los Angeles and opening tomorrow in New York, we now revisit Peter's review from Tribeca.] Overall, I must say that I was struck by the similarity of The Swell Season to Hobo with a Shotgun. Well, wait, hold on a sec and I'll explain: both films know what their target audiences expect as they enter the theater, and then do their best to make sure that they leave with their needs met. It's that simple. And in this case, the "best" of writing-directing team Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins, and Carlo Mirabella-Davis is very good indeed. After all, what's the most you could hope for in a doc that chronicles the artistic collaboration, public romance, and slow-dissolve breakup...

It’s fitting that this month, we will get to see multiple sides of Czech pianist Markéta Irglová: first in the acclaimed festival-circuit rock doc, The Swell Season, which looks at her work alongside longtime collaborator, Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, and then as an artist on her own with her debut solo album, Anar. Luckily for us, neither disappoint. Although it’s Irglová at the creative and musical center of the album, it may be a bit misleading to call it a “solo album,” because as with her work with Hansard for The Swell Season, she draws inspiration from the many muses...

Way back in the halcyon days of 2007, The Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová co-starred in the Irish musical "Once." Though Hansard had only limited experience in front of the camera and Irglová none, the film went on to become a success, due in no small part to the soundtrack created by two professional musicians, specifically the Oscar-winning track "Falling Slowly."
Hansard and Irglová's film collaboration and make-believe romance eventually developed into a more formal collaboration and real-life romance, with the folk rock couple recording three well-received albums as The Swell Season. However, following their Academy Award victory and subsequent touring, the pair grew apart, downgrading their romantic relationship to a close collaborative friendship.
The new documentary, "The Swell Season" tells the story of the duo's stagnating romance and also examines Hansard's response to his new hard-earned fame, contrasting it with Irglová's overnight success. After making the rounds at...
