painfully awkward and cringey
jjparuta19 December 2022
Boring, too many awkward cliches, bad acting and corny. I cannot with this movie the trailer was enticing tho. 20 min passed i'm already forcing myself to keep watching, i stopped watching after 1hr it's just not working for me. I felt like i've wasted 1hr of my time with this. The idea was there but it was a flop. Even the zombies are a miss, 30min passed i already knew who the antagonist was that's how cliche this is plus reasoning, lines, expressions and the plot were all rubbish. It's just... 3/10 should've been lower but they were able to trick me into thinking that it's good because of the trailer so i'd give them that. Lol.

Well, at Least They Tried.
ReaLMoisan4 June 2022
This movie has cinematography and editing that's usually reserved for music videos. It utilizes some quick and peculiar edits, unnecessary uses of slow motion, and YouTube video style transitions. Unlike a five minute music video where such production techniques may work, it gets tedious in a full length feature film. Some of the dialogue, especially the feel good monologue near the end of the film wouldn't be out of place in a Hallmark made-for-TV movie or an ABC after school special.

All of the characters represent typical high school cliche caricatures. They try to add some characterization and depth to some of the characters, but it's anything but nuanced. They also try to do something different with the genre too. There's a twist in the third act that tries to subvert your expectations. Unfortunately, this twist doesn't really work logically. How did the perpetrators plan to actually get away with their Machiavellian plot once everything was over? The authorities would have a lot of questions, and you'd think anyone who put this much thought and effort into their plan would have considered this. The movie hopes you don't think about it.

The production value isn't that bad, surprisingly. There's some decent practical effects, and it doesn't look or feel like most lower budget horror movies. The movie maintains a fairly frantic pace throughout most of it's run time. The director subscribes to the J. J. Abrams and Michael Bay school of film making: where they try to keep the pace of the movie fast enough to distract the audience from actually thinking about the plot. It's obvious that those responsible for this production tried to make the best movie they could. There's effort put into it's production that elevate it above many low budget horror movies. The sets, lighting, cinematography, sound and effects, editing, and everything else that makes a movie are all in service of trying to entertain their audience.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Any movie that destroys my suspension of disbelief by making me question the logic of the plot, characters, or the universe the movie exists in, has failed at being effective entertainment. Well before the twist was revealed I was already taken out of the movie because things weren't adding up. Once the twist happens, all immersion is broken when you realize it doesn't really make sense. How could they possibly think they'd get away with their plan, and once you ask yourself that, the narrative fails. The twist seems necessary, since the opening title cards say "Blumhouse After-School Special" and "Presented by the Student Teachers Division." Which explains the hackneyed morality injected into the script throughout the movie, and the necessity of that last cheesy monologue near the end of the movie too.

It's not an offensively bad movie by any stretch. It's got a fast pace, and it tries to keep its audience entertained. Although it's obviously made on a lower budget, nothing about it's production looks or feels cheap or lazy. It tried to do something creative within the genre, which is always welcome over the assembly line, paint by numbers productions that inundate most entertainment today. The cliche characters, nonsensical plot, and overt injection of it's themes and message just can't be ignored. Others may find the film more entertaining, but it didn't work for me.

Absolutely hate the main character
jennschreiber-9951529 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The actress is fine but the main character is so problematic. Pity party, getting people killed, petty arguments, I absolutely hated her.

The actual movie was cringe, the acting gets pretty cringy. The story likes to tell and not show. It feels very cookie cutter.

When they do show and not tell it's actually awesome. Until the plot twist the movie was eh. But the fact the main character gets all the answers in a weird way sucks.

There's so many plot holes,... scenes drag . It's just a mess through and through. So I don't know if anyone else finished feeling lost and annoyed but you're not alone.

Godawful
justahunch-705492 December 2022
Somewhere on some site at some point in time this was recommended. I wish I knew which one as I'd never listen to them again. I'm embarrassed I watched this this infantile thing. At first I thought it a comedy horror flick, but it doesn't pan out that way. At least for me. This is yet another walking dead film with a big twist. The film itself is awful, but the twist makes it even more idiotic than it already was, though it does explain why a zombie knocks on a bus door. The acting is poor, the writing inexcusable and the whole thing utterly ridiculous. I don't know what more there is to say about this to get to 600 characters, but I did it!

Brain Dead
halfxbreed236 June 2022
How does someone on drugs fall out of a window, break their neck and just gets up and runs away?

Similar to HIGH TENSION this movie has too many plot holes to make sense. It's nonsensical. Even if you turn your brain off it's not enjoyable.

One of the WORST movies ever
mikejdesign27 January 2023
If you like movies that SUCK, this is the movie for you. It has terrible, TERRIBLE acting, a story that seems like it was written in 5 minutes (or less), and is nothing like the rest of movies made by Blumhouse. I can't believe this made it into production!

If you're thinking about watching this... don't. If you're thinking about renting this... don't. If you're thinking about buying it... unless your kid is in it... DON'T! Ugh 179 more characters needed for this review. Now 131. Why the need for long reviews in order to post? Only 74 characters left at this point and if you read this far, you'll see my review sucked. JUST LIKE THIS MOVIE!

Mediocre
ashfordofficial5 June 2022
Nothing new to see here. The quality as we can expect from any other made-for-television films, very mediocre direction, screenplay and weak performances. The final 10 or 15 minutes saved this film from going a complete disaster.

I'm pretty sure the target audience for this film is definitely youngsters; lots of social commentary, high school drama, bullying, dramatic outbursts and teenage insecurities in dialogues throughout the entirety of the film.

Unimpressive...
paul_haakonsen4 June 2022
When I sat down to watch the 2022 horror comedy "Unhuman", I hadn't even heard about the movie. I didn't even know what it was about. But since I hadn't already seen it, of course I opted to give writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton's movie a chance.

And I will say that the movie was sort of semi-adequate. I mean, I figured this was a zombie movie outbreak, from what was going on there on the screen. Now, it wasn't the most impressive or most entertaining of zombie outbreak movies, but it was fairly watchable for what it was.

Now, then when director Marcus Dunstan finally revealed what was going on, about an hour into the foray, the movie went from being semi-adequate to being utter rubbish. The whole flip and switch of storyline events was just a slap to the face with a cold, dead fish. In fact, it was so stupid that I didn't even opt to finish watching the movie. Now, I will not reveal what was going on here, as you have to watch it for yourself.

It should be noted, however, that the effects in the movie were actually fairly good. But special effects can only do so much for lifting a broken movie.

"Unhuman" started out okay enough and was watchable enough, right up to a certain point and then everything just came crashing down. And believe you me, I have no intentions of returning to finish watching the rest of the movie.

My rating of "Unhuman" lands on a three out of ten stars.

High School age geared zombie movie with a moral.
mrhartleythatsme-3031924 September 2022
I watched this because I watch zombie movies. I also read the user reviews before I watched Unhuman and I very nearly didn't watch it because of the reviews. Albeit, granted there are quite a few awkward moments, cheesy quotes, and uncomfortable scenes as adolescents attempt to be cool and/or bad ass that would probably have made me laugh more if I didn't feel so embarrassed on their behalf, perhaps the younger (high school aged) audience might fail to catch any embarrassment feelings and laugh as the film intended and i think they should have that option instead of being chased away from watching this film by the plethora of horrendous reviews because it's NOT that bad of a movie. In fact, it was actually a pretty damn good movie over all. I was thoroughly enthralled for the first half, and even though the plot change was definitely over explained which unfortunately drastically reduced the horror aspect and gave it all a feeling like two wrongs do make a right (which just might be the unintentional REAL morel of the story) I was still nonetheless entertained. Even the final scene wasn't a total loss since it definitely got me worked up as I yelled "yeah right!! Give the kids what?!?" I have watched a LOT of REALLY horrible unwatchable zombie movies that felt like drop out students filmed a zombie movie using a flip phone for their camera. This was not one of them. It's wasn't a ten star but was definitely watchable, enjoyable, intense, and fun plus awkward, geeky, and kinda wholesome. Plus, it's a zombie movie!! Why wouldn't you want to watch it?!?

Who are we supposed to root for in this?
bluegrassglen9 June 2022
I can't say much without giving spoilers but my title says it. It's hard to like a movie when it makes you walk away hating everyone.

And the funniest character is the first to die! WTF! (not a spoiler due to subjectivity and no specifics)

Ugh!
ts-000024 July 2023
A low-quality,cringe-worthy,clichéd mess of a movie.

I don't even categorize this as a fun, cheesy or B rated type movie.

If it wasn't Blumhouse you'd think it was a film project by students, therefore rather ridiculous this production company.. Is allowed to get anything, including trash on screen.

Had average actors, acting wasn't great & cinematography ok.

The final scene by PTA mom was dumb,so guess risks and violence is ok.. If the outcome is basically successful, talk about twisted logic.

Want a cheesy movie, skip this! Need a mind-numbing or torture someone you hate movie or like the actors,well.. Go for it!

This is a Solid Movie!
brianhenneman-881475 November 2022
First of all, let's get something straight: all the 1 and 2 reviewers think they're so erudite and astute and insightful. Don't listen to them. They're a bunch of gas bags and wannabe Sister & Eberts. I promise to give an honest and plain assessment. I don't care if you don't like, respect, hate, love this review--but it will be honest and objective.

The zombie sub-genre gets a lot of bad press lately. However, this movie takes a very interesting twist like no other before. Very intriguing twist at the end. Good blend of humor and suspense and fright. There is an after credits scene that's important too.

That's it. Don't listen to the naysayers--give it a watch, you won't be disappointed.

Watch it for yourself
asadbanana10 June 2022
I'm happy I went into this movie without reading the reviews because I was actually able to enjoy it. It's not anything outstanding that'll make you watch it over on repeat, but it was fun. That's what it was supposed to be right? Mindless fun? If you have a problem with a movie about teenagers having teen-related issues in it, don't watch this movie. If you have a problem with a character being uncharismatic (which is literally a plot point of the movie), don't watch this movie. If you want this movie to be something it was never intended to be, don't watch this movie. Whatever happened to judging things on their own terms? This thing was not like this other thing I like is not a fair basis to review anything.

It's NOT what it seems
funnycommentor18 August 2022
The plot of the movie was basic and not interesting, at all. Eventually, the plot of the movie has nothing to do with the movie. The storyline was kinda clever, but there were some plot holes. The execution, wasn't successfully done. The characters were basic, not well-developed and uninteresting. The location of the movie was just okay, just a big abandoned building. The cinematography was just okay, it reminded me of a YouTube video style, lol. The kills were AWFUL, most kills were off-screen and not bloody at all. It wasn't scary and the jumpscares were predictable. The casting was nice and the acting was descent. The plot twist was totally unexpected and it was kinda good.. Overall, it was a low budget horror movie, kinda innovative, but it wasn't well-developed.. The ending scene was unexpected. I don't think a sequel is needed. Actually, I don't think they're gonna make a second movie.

Blumhouse probably didn't envision this movie turning out the way it did
matthewfuller-0191511 July 2022
What started off as a typical cheesy teen horror movie that would be serviceable for B flick horror fans turned into a nightmare itself. Clearly this director tried to follow suit with other Blumhouse directors by turning up a huge plot twist for its audience but instead turned up an epic fail of direction, execution and any sense of practicality for even a Zombie flick.

Same old garbage
Go_For_The_Jugular5 June 2022
No different to any other teen zombie/survival horror movie.

Same cliché characters - the nerd, the loner, the cool black guy, the jock, the brainy one, the quiet one etc.

It's starts off well, but gets really boring from the 20-minute mark. Ironically, it was good until the first zombie was introduced.

Maybe they should of went in a different direction...and not bothered with the zombie element, as that really hampered it.

Unhuman
BandSAboutMovies4 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just like Torn Hearts, Unhuman is a movie from Blumhouse Television that I enjoyed way more than their theatrical releases. Seven misfit students - there's one for every cliche, but stay tuned - must join forces when their field trip is tested by an Emergency Broadcast System warning of a chemical incident and, you guessed it, the living dead.

Director and co-writer Marcus Dunstan is probably best known for his work on The Collection and The Collector, as well as writing Feast, several Saw movies and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. He's joined by Patrick Melton, who he wrote those films, as well as Piranha 3DD and the upcoming The Collected with.

Brianne Tju from the remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer is the lead in this, along with Drew Schneid from the modern Halloween movies, Uriah Shelton from Freaky, Benjamin Wadsworth from TV's Deadly Class, Ali Gallo, Joshua Mikel from The Walking Dead, Peter Giles (who will be The Collector in the upcoming The Collected) and several other young actors to fill out the school bus full of potential victims.

Billed as a "Blumhouse After-School Special," this movie has a twist that shifts the story midway through, something that some critics haven't seemed to enjoy. As for me, I approached this movie as not "what can the Saw creative do" and more a fun summer TV movie that I could enjoy without thinking about the world outside my door.

Don't go in expecting Nightmare City or Day of the Dead. Do expect goofy, neon and smoke-filled bubble gum fun. I doubt you'll learn a lesson, but is that why you watched after-school specials anyway?

Dull teen melodrama with monsters
aarpcats6 November 2022
The movie is plagued by a tired idea everyone has already seen in dozens of other movies. Within the first ten minutes of the film, the viewer knows who the villains are and who the heroine is.

Fresh young faces, the lack of tedious CGI, and fairly decent production values combine to do a good job of holding the viewer's interest, but aren't sufficient to make this into a good movie. Still, it's great to see young filmmakers get a chance like this one, and I hope this group makes a better movie next time.

As for this film, the company should start with a better script, better editing, and better zombies.

Enjoyable kooky mess
jmbovan-47-16017327 November 2022
Films builds upon the tropes of high school teenage movies with the battle between standard cliques. It starts with a field trip, the jocks and popular being especially cruel to the other "loser" groups. Then, suddenly, it's a zombie flick with the teenagers having to find a way to survive as a chemical attack is occurring (and seemingly the source of the zombie outbreak). The battle sets the stage for the teenagers to address the cliques, conflicts in the relationships, and the omnipresent search for the self in adolescence. Goofy and campy, the film does well playing up the comedy and horror through the end. The surprise ending is interesting and does change the perspective of the film, turning it askew for a happy surprise. Overall, it does what it planned to do but isn't a grand film.

"So, what did we learn?"
gab-675994 June 2022
We learned that this was another attempt at cool for poor Blum. Sad thing is I still have faith in the man that he will eventually get it right again. Hell, if I didn't have faith I would not even finish watching any of his movies. Overall the story was original but any movie that has time for stupid chit-chat instead of actually running away, just pisses me off! Dumb and dumber is what I would classify this one as, then the thought that they are even thinking about making a pt. 2 is just confusing to me. When you are thinking of making a pt. 2 at LEAST make the first one GOOD! Maybe it was an age thing but this movie just sucked for me. Please Blum, if you ever just need someone to tell you if your movies suck or not before releasing them just hmu. I have no problem in being completely honest with you! @53x13_M3x13.

A Great Ride You Won't Forget!!!
evanmagic-14 June 2022
In a time when movies are putting everyone to sleep, this movie will keep you on your toes and then some. Watch with friends, enjoy the laughs, the scares, the fun...and amazing artistic style and energy coming from this wonderful young cast and proven writer/director. It's worth every minute and you will be talking about it after! A lot to dig through and that's great! It's not the goriest or scariest, but it doesn't intend to be. Turn up the sound, pay attention and stay through the credits!

VIEWS ON FILM review of Unhuman
burlesonjesse512 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's something sort of inhuman about 2022's Unhuman. What am I talking about? I'm talking about the characters here who come off as so unlikable to the audience it's hard to root for them. They're poor man's Breakfast Club types aspiring to be Shaun of the Dead types. High school, well it sure has been bleak for them.

So yeah, Unhuman is a zombie movie with all these HS stereotypes (how'd you guess). You got the jock, the princess, the oppressed smart girl, the token, and the nerds. Their bus crashes during a field trip, they escape, and then they must band together to try and stop some revived corpses.

Director Marcus Dunstan pulls off all the stops with Unhuman. Less gory than most, he infuses split screens, wipes, slow-mo stuff, and Dutch angles to let the world know he's showing off. Hey, I give him a little credit because there's enough zombie fabric out there to power a small country. Gotta inject some new life (ha ha) into an already manifest genre.

Unhuman breaks itself down into three parts. It's an ambitious if overwrought viewing experience. The first part is the set up (mentioned in the second paragraph). The second part is the refreshing twist (told in one long flashback). The third part is the high school misfits getting their revenge on by fighting ugly (with fists of fury).

In retrospect, helmer Dunstan tries really hard to make you forget that Unhuman is just another pic about the Walking dead. His film is more a tongue in cheek conspiracy, a John Hughes hue, or a high school reprisal prank if you will. I give him points for that but the problem is his actors who are faceless, falsely witty, and only moderately plucky. They're in a movie that's not "unwatchable" but more of a slight, "human" stain.

I find no reason for you to watch this
shugosha13 June 2022
This film just makes no sense. The plot is beyond convoluted and I found myself siding with the "bad guys" of the film. I could see where they were trying to make heroic moments but they just came off as cringe worthy. One star for production values and one star for trying. Stay away and find a more entertaining use of your time, like go for a walk or something.

Could have been much better
windsorenquirer5 June 2022
It started pretty funny and interesting but the fun and interesting part didn't last for too long and it turned to be tedious and boring. The "twist" didn't help either rather ruined everything and I totally lost interest after the first 40 minutes or so.
