Learn more- It's TV theme week on "Dancing with the Stars," and, of course, that means the judges are going to assess the season-long success of each remaining couple. (This is what happens when the show continues to be two hours long despite the fact that half the competitors are gone).
The judges' rundown: Audrina impressed Len Goodman from Day 1, when she started her first performance with a solo in the middle of the floor. He loves the improvement her posture, but she has to work on her toes in the ballroom dances and her edginess in the Latin dances. He wants Tony to push her in the choreography. Len says, "There is no reason why she shouldn't win." He says the waltz was her best dance.
Kyle impresses Bruno Tonioli with his musicality and his energy, but he needs to learn how to control it in different situations. He says the Latin dances come naturally to Kyle, but he has to work on the ballroom. He needs to work on his feet, Bruno says. He says Kyle's cha cha cha was the best.
Carrie Ann Inaba says Brandy has all the ingredients that make a great dancer. She says Brandy has been working hard on her technique. She sees insecurity in Brandy's performances and needs to become more confident. "If Brandy starts to believe in herself more, she could go straight to the top of the leader board," Carrie Ann says. She says Brandy's rumba was her best.
Len goes on to review Kurt, who, he says, "shows us that dancing can look macho." Len says he thought "no way" when he saw Kurt in Week 1. "Hands like frying pans," and no musicality. Len says he needs to see more musicality in his upper body and better footwork. He says Kurt can "go on and on" if he keeps bringing the enthusiasm. He says the jive was Kurt's best dance.
Bruno reviews Bristol, who he says has "got guts" for coming from the middle of nowhere in Alaska. He says Bristol seems "to be a natural mover." He says she has great coordination, musicality and is light on her feet, but she's not a performer. "She has to learn how to become a character." He says her face sometimes "goes vacant" while she's dancing. "Bristol has to believe she belongs here," he says, adding that he wants to see her explode. "Open that door, let the minx out!" He says the quickstep, when she let go of her inhibitions, was one of her best.
Len calls Florence a "great entertainer." He says she has improved on so many levels, but her biggest trouble is that "she can't compete with some of these young people, physically, especially in some of these faster dances." He says she has to up the ante on her own level of skills. He says the one dance that sums her up is the rumba.
Len says Rick is "not just eye candy -- this guy can dance." He says he thought Rick would be clumsy and awkward at 6-foot-7, and now says he was wrong on every count. He says Rick needs to work on his posture, and that RIck needs to dance to his height. He says "anything is possible" with Rick, especially if he can continue to pull off dances like his samba.
Carrie Ann says Jennifer is one to watch because she's "hot, hot, hot." She says Jennifer is 50 "but she has got the energy and the sex appeal of a 26-year-old." She says Jennifer touched everyone with her first dance, a waltz she dedicated to Patrick Swayze. She says Jennifer's emotions are good for performance, but she has to keep her nerves in check. She worries that if Jennifer pushes herself too hard, she might get injured. She singles out Jennifer's Argentine tango as her best dance so far.
Nearly 30 minutes into the show, it's almost time for dancing. First, the introductions. And a commercial break.
Brandy & Maks: A week after pulling a couple of 9s, Brandy and Maks pulled "the 'Friends' song," as Maks calls it, for their TV theme. Brandy says she loves that song because it's all about being a friend. They danced the quickstep. Len says he's "so impressed" and that Brandy brought energy, sass, and says, "It was, without a doubt, your best dance. Well done." Bruno says they found the right formula and that they were "on it." Carrie Ann says the couple has been through a lot, and Brandy is trusting Maks more. She says they're "at a whole other level now." Scores: 9, 9, 9. Total: 27
Florence & Corky: After sizzling up the dance floor with her rumba last week, Florence shockingly drew "The Brady Bunch" theme song for her TV theme week performance. Florence texts Barry Williams (Greg Brady) to have him come visit the rehearsal studio. Florence says Barry always had a crush on her and she would neither confirm or deny any relationship. They danced a tango. Bruno says the beginning, when it was classic and straight, it was "a beautiful tango," but then it went into "rag-doll mode." Carrie Ann says she liked it and calls it one of Florence's best, saying it shows off her elegance, calling her a "sexy senior." She says some of the moves got her off on her timing. Len says he wishes he was a sexy senior, and Florence gives him a kiss. He says parts of the tango were excellent and others needed work, but it was possible her best dance, so far. Scores 7, 7, 7. Total: 21
Kurt & Anna: A week after getting his lowest scores of the season, Kurt attempts to bounce back with the theme from "Bewitched." He's hoping to bounce back in the competition the way he came back in the NFL. They go through some cultural background fun, as Anna knows nothing about football and Kurt knows nothing about a couple of Russian dogs who went into outer space. They danced the quickstep. They earned a standing ovation from the crowd. Carrie Ann says she just saw the spirit of Gene Kelly enter Kurt's body, as he made it look easy. Len says, "After last week, the only way is up, and up you have gone." He calls it a "vast improvement and a great performance." Bruno says Kurt was in sparkling form and he was impressed with the timing. Scores: 8, 8, 8. Total: 24
Audrina & Tony: Oddly enough, Audrina pulled the legendary, iconic, unforgettable theme from "The Hills." (It's probably better known to the mass audience as Natasha Bedingfield's first hit, "Unwritten." They prepared to do the rumba, which Audrina found a little awkward after Tony described it as "making love on the dance floor." He gave her a tip that Richard Gere once told him -- eat some garlic and onions to lessen the intensity of an intimate performance. She bit into an onion and said it helped. Len calls it excellent, notes there was a connection and chemistry, but tells Audrina to open up a little more. Bruno says Audrina has improved, technically, but he was it pulsating with passion. "Don't be plastic, be fantastic," he tells her. Carrie Ann says she saw Audrina go "leaps and bounds into a whole new level," from the hips down. But up above, it was "still and dead" compared. Then she says there was a lift. Tony denies it, but the damage has already been done. Scores: 7, 8, 8. Total: 23
Kyle & Lacey: Kyle took more shots for his technique last week and has a foxtrot to the theme of "Charlie's Angels." He wants to stop his slide down the leader board. Lacey decides to bring Kym and Chelsie -- his "Angels," apparently -- to help him in rehearsal. It was quite the mix of foxtrot and '70s disco stylings. Bruno says Kyle brings the entertainment factor. He says it was al crazy and not a proper foxtrot. He says it looked like "Richard Pryor kind of gone mad," and Lacey asks, "Who's Richard Pryor," launching boos from the crowd. Carrie Ann says she liked it all, and said Kyle's technique has improved. Len says it started bad and it just got worse. He says it was "a joke." Scores: 8, 5, 7. Total: 20
Rick & Cheryl: After hitting some rough spots in rehearsal, Rick randomly suggests to Cheryl that she meet some of the basketball players he's played with so she can learn more about him. Cue: Kobe Bryant cameo. They danced the rumba to the "Hill Street Blues" theme. Carrie Ann wants to report a crime: That Rick could "look that good, and rumba so well." She says it just "got hotter and hotter." Len says he liked it, but he didn't get the feeling of a developing romance, "it was more like a couple staying together for the sake of the children." Bruno says Rick went "from Megatron to being mega-smooth." Scores: 8, 8, 8. Total: 24
Bristol & Mark: Bristol tells Mark she's surprised to still be in the competition, and that she only hoped to last through the first week. Their dance is a jive to the "Monkees" theme song. Mark brings clowns into the rehearsal to help loosen her up a bit and says he's pulling out all the stops to get attention in this performance. They come out in gorilla suits, which seem to trip Bristol up a bit as she misses several steps -- possibly because she can't see Mark. Len says he liked the monkey suits and wishes they would have kept them on. He says he saw a "higher degree of performance" from Bristol. Bruno says she tried to perform and it worked, but she lost technique. Carrie Ann says she's happy for Bristol for making a transformation and trying something new. She points out that Bristol forgot a lot of the steps. Scores: 6, 6, 6. Total: 18
Jennifer & Derek: Derek assures Jennifer that their foxtrot will be a little easier on her body. There's some tension and Derek becomes frustrated with Jennifer not picking everything up. She tells him to control his temper, then leaves the room to go for a walk. He apologizes for letting his frustration spill over toward her. They dance to the "Married ... With Children" theme song, "Love and Marriage." Bruno starts by saying, "It was like watching the perfect housewife," saying it was "pristene, elegant, beautifully danced." Carrie Ann says it was good but "wasn't nearly your best." Len says the dance was lovely, but was "all a bit too theatrical." He says she didn't need to waste 12 bars of the song with a feather duster (playing her housewife role). Scores: 8, 8, 9. Total: 25
