Swede Dreams, London
Celebrating Diy film-making of the endearingly amateurish kind, this festival could mark the moment a joke becomes a serious art form, but let's hope not. Leading the charge are bedroom classics such as Star Wars Uncut, a crowdsourced shot-for-shot recreation made by thousands of under-resourced fans, and Night Of The Living Dead: Reanimated, which does a similar job, except with animation. Screening alongside them are such studio-made takes on Diy film-making as Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind, which coined the term "Sweded", and Son Of Rambow, which oddly echoes Zachary Oberzan's one-man Rambo, Flooding With Love For The Kid. All this plus little extras add up to a delectably silly two-day event.

(Your Brother. Remember? opens for a theatrical run in NYC at the reRun Gastropub on Friday, April 6, 2012. Visit the film’s Facebook page or Oberzan’s official website to learn more.)
For those of us who, as adults, continue to take the preposterous cliff-jump that is making movies with nary a paycheck in sight, there are almost certainly VHS/Hi-8/mini-dv tapes hidden somewhere that contain our earliest “work.” Most of this “work” can be categorized as such: backyard/basement/garage variations on—or outright recreations of—whatever big-budget spectacles we had most recently encountered. As a combination performance artist/filmmaker in his mid-30s with just two features under his belt—Flooding With Love For The Kid and now Your Brother. Remember?—Zachary Oberzan has done the unthinkable. Rather than exploiting these past transgressions for comedic purposes, he has embraced them to the point where they define his peculiar artistic vision.

Flooding With Love For The Kid
Sun at The Ritz!
Filmed in a tiny New York City apartment — you know, the kind where the toilet is in the kitchenette — this extremely low budget remake of First Blood is not unlike Rambo himself; in the story as well as the production, we have one man who isn’t afraid to take on the world.
The visionary behind and in front of the camera (and computer, and edit bay and probably craft services table too) is Zachary Oberzan, a filmmaker and actor who decided to put every single one of his skills to the test simultaneously. He performs as no fewer than a dozen characters — from old men to Rambo himself — and spent less than $100 to make his magnum opus.
A mind-boggling feat, to be sure, but it wasn’t just some crazy, pointless experiment. Nope, the resulting film is actually good.

One of the great joys of being a critic is the childlike sense of wonder that comes with being the first to discover something new (that, and as the esteemed music critic Lester Bangs once put it, getting free shit). I first met Zachary Oberzan after seeing his one-man show Rambo Solo, developed with Nature Theater of Oklahoma, in early 2009. (Yes, for the record the tickets were comp since I was reviewing for Theater Online.) At the time I wrote, “I have seen the theater future and its name is Rambo – or more accurately, one fearless thespian named Zachary Oberzan who’s got the right combination of mesmerizing lunacy and sheer cojones to guide an audience through the entire plot of First Blood in his Manhattan studio apartment then transport the journey to the live stage of Soho Rep.”
As it turns out, my “big discovery” was already an accomplished,...

Coming up at the end of the month is the Raindance Film Festival, London's showcase for the world's most promising independent and low-budget cinema. Now in its 18th year, Raindance is boasting a line-up of 77 would-be breakout flicks, most of which are receiving their UK premieres.
With strands dedicated to documentaries, Japanese cinema, and homegrown British films, as well as awards given for the best debut, microbudget, UK and international features (to be judged by, amongst others, Charles Saatchi, Julian Barratt, Dave McKean and Lemmy), there's certainly a lot on offer for the discerning cinephile. Luckily for you, we've combed the programme and come up with 10 films that have impressed us with bold concepts, or baffled us with their barminess.
