- With her application to become a Queen's Counsel in mind, Martha Costello reluctantly accepts to defend Alan Bradley who is accused of raping his former girlfriend Annie Laidlaw. She doesn't unusually accept rape cases as she disagrees with the rough handling most accusers must face in court. Once again, she will be up against her colleague Clive Reader who knows her reluctance to attack the accuser and plans on using that in court. Reader has also seduced his pupil Niamh Cranitch, word of which quickly gets around. Niamh is also sent to a Magistrates Court when Martha's former client, Gary Rush is again arrested. In Chambers, Kate Brockman begins a hushed campaign to oust Billy as chief clerk. Martha learns she is pregnant.—garykmcd
