Netflix has ordered a coming-of-age comedy series inspired by the life of Mindy Kaling, Variety has learned.
The untitled series, which has received a 10-episode order, was co-created by Kaling and Lang Fisher, with the latter also set to serve as showrunner. The series will follow the complicated life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl.
Both Kaling and Fisher will executive produce along with Howard Klein and David Miner. The series was set up under Kaling’s overall deal at Universal Television, with Universal set to produce the new series. Kaling recently exited that deal for a rich new pact with Warner Bros. Television.
In a previous interview with Variety, Kaling described how the series came to be. “Netflix approached me about doing a series on young Mindy,” she said. “I wasn’t as interested in telling a period piece about an Indian girl growing up in the ’80s,...

Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland on becoming his favourite superheroSpider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland on becoming his favourite superheroBob Strauss - Cineplex Magazine7/5/2017 1:50:00 Pm
The third time should, at least, be charming.
That’s because Tom Holland is playing the friendly neighborhood webslinger in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Exuberant and super-friendly, the 21-year-old English actor is the third person to play Marvel Comics’ most popular superhero on the big screen since the turn of the century. And if the overeager, sarcastic teen approach to Peter Parker that he introduced in last year’s Captain America: Civil War is maintained, we’ll have a much different wall crawler than with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s angstier interpretations.
“I tried to bring a lot of levity to the character, so at every opportunity I got I was trying to crack jokes and be the wise guy,” says Holland over the phone.

The new Spider-Man has been chosen. Deadline has confirmed that the new Peter Parker, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, has been cast. Sony has decided upon 19-year-old actor Tom Holland to star as the new Spidey, and they've set Jon Watts to direct. Watts is still an up-and-comer and many may not recognize his name, but he's the filmmaker behind Cop Car, a Sundance midnight film that we enjoyed - see the trailer here; he also directed the film Clown previously and a number of "The Onion News Network" episodes. Holland was on the shortlist for actors under consideration, along with Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe. This seems like he might be the best choice. Our last update before this on Sony's next new Spider-Man movie identified Drew Goddard as the potential frontrunner to write and direct. However, that seems to have changed...

A decade in rehab has failed to tame abrasive former supermodel Salem Rogers (Leslie Bibb, About a Boy), Model of the Year 1998. As Netflix continues to assert itself as a major television company with such acclaimed series as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Amazon Studios is racing to catch up by ordering series it hopes will be equally well-received. So far, Amazon has scored one big hit in the form of Jeffrey Tambor-led dramedy Transparent, and it hopes to find some more in the new lineup of pilots, which will be made available for viewing as part of the company’s first pilot season of 2015.

AmazonStudios is taking a more unusual approach by letting viewers decide what they want to keep watching. The company has kicked off its screening process this weekend by unveiling its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows, all made available for free on AmazonInstant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and Amazon is welcoming feedback from its audience. According to Deadline, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups to decide if they greenlight a series or not. The highest-profile series is Zombieland, but the two that look most interesting are Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; and Onion News Empire. Amazon has not yet decided how many of the shows will make the cut, nor when they will premiere.

Alicia Silverstone will be returning to TV as the lead in Lifetime's "Hr," Deadline reports.
The actress, who most recently visited her "Clueless" co-star Jeremy Sisto for a stint on "Suburgatory," will play "the uptight Director of Human Resources for a global company who, after a head injury alters her outlook on life, throws standard corporate practices out the window and inspires the business to strive for new ambitions and profits."
Deadline reports that although the pilot was initially ordered last year, the pickup was contingent upon casting a recognizable lead, so the network spent time making sure that they'd found the right actress for the job.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has landed another big-name actor for one of its first six comedy pilots. I’ve learned that Jeffrey Tambor is set to star in The Onion Presents: The News. Tambor will play David Everett, Onn’s oldest and most respected news anchor. He is intellectual, highly ambitious, cutthroat and insecure as he believes his job is being threatened by the younger Cameron, whom David detests. Todd Strauss-Schulson is directing. I hear Tambor was also courted for a broadcast pilot but opted for the Amazon project. He joins John Goodman and Bebe Neuwirth, who recently joined other Amazon Studios pilots.

The lead story this weekend has to be the gunman that shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, killed a federal judge, a child, and wounded 18 others. Rep. Giffords was generally viewed as a friend of gay rights. The gunman, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, was subdued by a staffer and is in custody, while another suspect is being sought. I really don’t want to get into wild blame games like some, but I do agree with Sheriff Dupnik: The vitriol surrounding this country’s politics is out of control, and when politicians keep talking about “2nd Amendment remedies,” putting gun sights on Congressional seats, and inviting voters to a political rally where they can shoot a fully automatic M-16, we can’t be surprised when an unstable person takes it literally. My thoughts and condolences to everyone affected.

Well, At Least I Won't Get Called Poncy Again. I Hope....
As you read this week's column, I'll already be attending the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour down in Pasadena, California. And before I've attended a single panel, I can already pretty much guarantee this is going to be one of the weaker (gay) tours in memory. For starters, CBS hasn't given us a single screener for their two new shows (which sound utterly conventional and appear to be gay free. Shock!) and even ABC which is reliably gay-friendly, doesn't have anything that looks terribly promising.
Honestly, Starz looks to be the best bet between Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Torchwood, but since for some reason, Russell T Davies won't be available for me to interview during the TCA, even that won't take up quite as much as my time. Fortunately, Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is available...
