Cult Hero opens with the credits presented as those of a reality TV show called Cult Buster which may have been the film’s original title. Revolving around the exploits of deprogrammer Dale Domazar the season final goes off the rails as not only doesn’t he stop their human sacrifice, but his intervention also results in a mass suicide.
Elsewhere Kallie and her husband Brad are having problems. Brad seems to have lost his vigor and his drive, even worse he dared to buy a painting for the house without getting her approval. So she enrolls him at Master Jagori’s retreat for men.
But when he extends his stay without her permission she’s furious and demands to speak to the manager. When that doesn’t...

The ultimate reality show turns into a deadly nightmare, as a crew of TV personalities, including Sheila Smyth (Lisa Solberg), a professional organizer; Dr. Lance Ebe (Tony Burgess), a psychotherapist with an alarming patient relapse rate of 94%; ghost hunters Caleb and Chloe Black (Ry Barrett and Elma Begovic); and renovators Derek ‘Duke’ Jago (Marcus Ludlow) and The Falcon (Justin Darmanin), attempt to reform a legendary hoarder who owns four condemned and haunted properties. It’s the pilot episode for their comeback series ‘Extremely Haunted Hoarders.’ What could possibly go wrong?

You would think that the worlds of horror and professional wrestling would meet and make magical beautiful music together, wouldn’t you? Both are brash, bright, crazy and incredibly fun when they’re good. Sadly… both are bloody awful if done poorly. I’ve seen a few movies that have attempted to blend horror and wrestling and I’m yet to see one that has done it particularly well. So… is Parts Unknown, directed and written by Richard Chandler (Witch Hunt), a wrestling horror flick that manages to blend the two mediums into an entertaining film?
It’s a simple premise, as you’d expect, with a violent family of wrestlers (not sports entertainers) who look for another way to satisfy their lust for blood.

Ever since his breakthrough film, 2011’s Monster Brawl, Canadian filmmaker Jesse Thomas Cook’s love for zombies was more than evident. In said brawl, one of the contenders from the undead conference was, precisely, the Zombie Man (played by Rico Montana), a being from a late sixties outbreak that the military has kept in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in an obvious nod to George A. Romero’s influential masterpiece Night of the Living Dead. Now, Cook is back with Deadsight, his very first full-on take on the zombie subgenre. After unknown reasons have caused a zombie apocalypse, Ben (Adam Seybold) wakes up inside an abandoned ambulance, only to realize that he has lost his sight and has no recollection of how he ended up there. As he tries to...

A lot of us can probably recall that these two iconic movie monsters have met before in the past. Things didn’t always turn out the way people thought they would but then Godzilla vs. Kong really depends on where they’re fighting. Terrain is usually a big factor in any fight as it gives a decided advantage to one opponent over another. The weapons that each monster will use can be negated or amplified depending on what ground they’re fighting on. With King Kong and Godzilla though the fight could happen virtually anywhere and it’s going to be an epic that

In this morning's round-up, we have a Q&A with Casper Van Dien from the supernatural horror film, June. Also: details on Dracula's prop auction, XLrator Media's 24 Hour Rental, a video tribute to Friday the 13th Part VIII called "Voorhees Stomp", a new poster for The Hexecutioners, and release details for Krampus: The Reckoning.
Casper Van Dien Q&A: "June tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice) who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. And though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes, a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow. It’s only when June is sent to live with a new couple, Lily (Pratt) and Dave (Van Dien), that it looks as if things might finally work out. Except this innocent child with the face of an angel is possessed by an ancient, malevolent entity that has hijacked her soul.

The tenth annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival kicks off in a couple weeks and the festival has finally announced the second half of titles for this year’s lineup as well as the Canadian and International shorts. PopOptiq will once again be covering the event so be sure to check back at the end of the month. Here is the press release.
The Hallow (Ireland) Toronto Premiere
Possibly the scariest film in this year’s Toronto After Dark lineup, The Hallow from the producers of Let Us Prey terrified audiences at Sundance on its debut. After a young family move from the big city to a peaceful Irish woodland cottage, their dismissive attitude to folklore legends angers the local townspeople. It’s not long before the family members find themselves in a desperate fight for survival in a prolonged confrontation with some vicious creatures lurking in the forest.

Production has completed on Canada’s latest and wildest genre film, Holy Hell – a collaboration between first time writer and director Ryan Laplante, veteran sound designer George Flores (Antisocial, Septic Man, The Collapsed, Monster Brawl), composer Adrian Ellis (The Scarehouse, Out With Dad) and scream queen Alysa King (Berkshire County).
In the vein of recent horror/comedies like Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun, Holy Hell is a modern take on classic action, horror and exploitation film tropes. And best of all? The goal of Laplante’s movie is to break through every limit set by film, taste and reasonable societal behavior: all with anarchic glee! Check out the trailer below:
Holy Hell is the over-the-top, outrageous, sexually-deviant, blood-drenched story of Father Augustus Bane: a priest pushed too far who begins praying to a revolver and hunting down the gangsters who killed his parishioners.

If there’s ever been a film that made me feel like I needed a shower afterwards, it’s Jesse Thomas Cook’s Septic Man. Much like the tagline states, “It’s a crappy job,” but someone has to watch it, right? If you can get past all the pooping, vomiting, rotting and festering, a unique story influenced by Lloyd Kaufman’s Toxic Avenger model might break through the cloud of odoriferous unpleasantry, but weaker stomachs will struggle to keep their lunch down. The good thing is, your tolerance will be tested within mere seconds of the films opening, so if gross-out body horror isn’t your schtick, no time is wasted introducing the disgusting lengths Cook plunges in order to deliver the most realistic depiction of sanitation-gone-wrong possible. If you can’t stand the smell, get out of the bathroom – as quickly as possible.

Imagine the messiest bathroom you’ve ever seen. Now imagine it 100 times more disgusting and even then it probably doesn’t equal the horrendous confines of the restroom in the opening scene of Septic Man, due out later this month from Starz Digital Media. We have a clip featuring a bile-inducing bathroom that could be a plumber’s private hell.
“Septic Man follows Jack, a sewage worker who is determined to uncover the cause of the town’s water contamination crisis. During his investigation, he becomes trapped underground in a septic tank and undergoes a hideous transformation. He must team up with a docile Giant and confront a murdering madman in order to escape. Hailed as a “stunning” (Little Red Umbrella), “funny” (TwitchFilm), and “visceral story that will leave you shaken and desperate for a shower” (Rue Morgue Magazine), Septic Man is an odyssey into the darkest depths of gross-out horror.

It might seem unfair to suggest the new horror movie Septic Man is going to stink, especially without having seen it—but the filmmakers probably won’t object on this occasion. Written by Tony Burgess (Pontypool) and directed by Jesse Thomas Cook (Monster Brawl) the movie stars Jason David Brown as a man who undergoes a hideous transformation after he is trapped in a septic tank.
Find out just how hideous when Septic Man is released to VOD on August 12 or when the film arrives in cinemas three days later. Meanwhile, see the movie’s new poster above.

There are reasons to fear the things that go bump in the night in Ejecta, the latest offering from indie Canadian genre film outfit Foresight Features (Septic Man, Exit Humanity, Monster Brawl). As with Septic Man the script here comes courtesy of Pontypool author Tony Burgess with Matt Wiele and Chad Archibald in the director's chair and we're proud to present the official trailer and poster below.Ejecta is the story of two men who witness an unexplainable event in the atmosphere on the eve of a historic solar storm and must survive a terrifying life form that's hunting them. Sunday at Tadff is always a tough day. Generally speaking, from a reporting perspective, it means that you’ve been out until all hours of the morning for the last three nights, probably imbibed a bit more than necessary, lost a lot of sleep, and then spent all of your free time writing reviews, editing interviews, etc. As such, it is almost always the one day that I get to the theater either late, or right before the first movie of the afternoon.
This year, that first movie was the World Premiere of Silent Retreat, a story about a teenager who gets sent to a rehabilitation camp in the woods where escape attempts lead to encounters with something that lurks beyond the trees. Due to some trouble finding seating in the packed auditorium, I missed the theatrical showing, but I am hoping to be able to get a chance to...

Fantasia Film Festival 2013: Antisocial Tackles our Complex Relationship with Technology (Interview)
Antisocial is the feature length debut for directing and writing team Cody Calahan and Chad Archibald. In spite of their youthful appearances, they are not new to the Canadian film industry or Fantasia, having produced over ten short and feature length films – including Fantasia fan favourite Monster Brawl which screened at the fest in 2011. Working with Black Fawn Distribution and Breakthrough Entertainment, they have pulled together their resources and talent in order to bring Antisocial to the screen. For them, nothing was more important than having this project ready in time for Fantasia, and they are thrilled that their film will be making its world debut at their favourite festival. They are even more thrilled because both of the film’s screenings quickly sold out.

After two rounds in MTV Movies Blog's Great, Big Movie Monster Brawl, age has been the main factor in winning reader votes to decide the ultimate big screen beast. Godzilla ruled Round 1, and now Round 2 looks to belong to the "Cloverfield" monster.

"The Host" stood no chance against Godzilla, who took the first round of MTV's Great, Big Movie Monster Brawl, but today, we're heading back to the States for a more homegrown kind of terror.
Our tournament to crown a true king of all movie monsters thrashes on today with what we're calling the Neville Page Division. He's the creature designer behind both of today's giants, the "Cloverfield" monster and the "Super 8" alien.
Pick which monster you think should come out on top after the jump!
"Cloverfield"
This was the monster that, according to early fan theories, could have been Ultron, Cthulhu, or a giant whale, but what we got was a bizarre looking creature from Page and a surprisingly effective found footage movie from Matt Reeves and Drew Goddard.
"Super 8"
