Hoping to boost recruitment for Arthur's tiny army, Kay and Leontes set out to recruit a maverick fighter as new knight. They find born warrior Gawain bitterly isolated in a ruined chapel, cynical about chivalry, yet Kay manages to bond over a surprising common interest, literature. After Guinevere's father Leodegrance is pillaged, they seek sanctuary at Camelot. Merlin eagerly agrees to a grand wedding there, to boost moral and grant Arthur's court splendor, which the queen mother enjoys organizing. Arthur accepts to attend a lavish feast in his honor at Uther's castle, hosted by Morgan. Merlin disapproves but accompanies the king, finds she indeed has wicked magical plans, but finds it hard to counter them. Arthur fails to convince Guinevere to cancel the marriage, but wins a single night of secret passion. She uses stag blood to pretend loosing her virginity in Leontes's wedding night.
