The La Asian Pacific Film Festival has reached its 31st year (!) of bringing films from the Api community to Southern California. This year's lineup continues that tradition with a diverse array of films from all around the Pacific Rim. The fest kicks off April 23 with opening nighter Everything Before Us from directors Wesley Chan, Ted Fu and Philip Wang. The centerpiece films are Samantha Futerman and Ryan Miyamoto's separated twins documentary Twinsters and Daniel Park's La-set drama Ktown Cowboys. The fest closes up shop on April 30 with Shonali Bose's Indian-American drama Margarita With A Straw (pictured). For any Americans who need a crash course in Korean-American culture, look no further than Daniel Park’s Ktown Cowboys. Playing like an instructional video for those of us who are unfamiliar with Los Angeles’ Koreatown scene, we’re introduced to a group of characters who take time out of their busy partying schedule to drop factoids about Korean lifestyles. The whole thing feels like an episode of Korean Entourage in some ways, since each character pretty much mirrors Wahlberg’s “fictional” crew, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing for us karaoke-loving clubheads who are interested in other drunken cultures.
This is a straight-laced story about how bro-bonding can overcome the most dire of circumstances, which is nothing new, but the location of Ktown does offer more intrigue than an equal story about generic Californians with the same problem. This is Ktown, bro! Time to kick out the K-Pop and play some Starcraft!

South by Southwest starts tomorrow, Friday, March 13, and my pores are beaming with excitement, though that could just be a medical condition. I am looking at a very packed schedule of films over the nine day festival, with a total of 38 in all (36 reviews to write). So, I basically will be drowning in movies. But, then again, I can't complain too much, as I wouldn't have it any other way. You can take a look at what I hope my schedule ends up being below. Obviously, things could change as the festival progresses, with some titles getting more buzz than others and overtaking current films and so forth. But, I think, this is how I will be spending my SXSW. I will be updating this post throughout the festival with schedule changes and links to my reviews, so maybe bookmark this page if you're interested. I hope you enjoy my coverage,...

Based on the debauchery-filled web series of the same name, "Ktown Cowboys" is a bro-mantic dramedy (is that a genre first?) about five hard-partying pals drifting toward adulthood in Koreatown's after-hours soju bars and karaoke rooms in hopes of finding a better version of themselves. Check out the trailer below. The SXSW-bound cast includes Shane Yoon, Peter Jae, Danny Cho, Sunn Wae, Bobby Choy, Ken Jeong of "The Hangover" and "Hawaii Five-o"'s Daniel Dae Kim. The film is directed by Daniel (Dpd) Park, the creative director of Transparent Agency, which works with Snoop Dogg, Lmfao, Yg, Tyga, Sidney Samson, Frank Ocean, Macy Gray and more. It is produced by Brian Chung, Daniel Sollinger and Greg Bishop and written by Danny Cho of "Mad TV" and "Parks and Recreation." The origins of Ktown Cowboys go back about five years when director Daniel Park and writer Danny Cho created a web series about the late-night high jinks of best friends in Los Angeles’ Koreatown. That series followed fresh-off-the-bus Johnny (Lanny Joon) from Richmond, Va, who, jobless and hearbroken by his girlfriend, is taken under the wing of his cousin Jason (Shane Yoon) and his party hardy friends. The first episode won best feature narrative at the 2010 Los Angeles…...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.
