Chilean writer-director Nicolas Lopez reunites with frequent collaborator Paz Bascunan for his upcoming comedy No Filter (Sin Filtro) and while she's not actually reprising her character from Lopez's hugely popular trio of Fuck My Life movies it's obvious that this is very much meant to live in a similar world. Built around fast paced gags in the wired-up middle classes of Santiago, this looks to be pure, populist comedy and exactly the sort of thing that Lopez is best at. Check out the teaser below....

“I’ve had an amazing experience, both creatively and financially in Chile partnering with Nicolas Lopez and Miguel Asensio,” said Roth.

Aftershock was released to Blu-ray and DVD this week, and we were given the opportunity to submit questions to director Nicolás López. In our latest Q&A feature, Nicolás López talks about working with Eli Roth, practical effects, and his thoughts on The Green Inferno:
Now that Aftershock has seen a theatrical and VOD release in the Us, are you happy with how the movie has been received by horror fans?
Nicolás López: It’s very exciting to know that people from all around the world are watching the movie on VOD, DVD or…pirated, and being able to have a direct dialogue with the fans (and haters) on twitter and instagram (@nicolaslopez) is awesome. I love every reaction. Love or hate. I just want the people to watch the movie.
Instead of a typical disaster, Aftershock is infused with horror elements. Was this something you always planned...

Back in 2004, Chilean director Nicolas Lopez made Promedio Rojo, a quirky comedy about three teenage outcasts trying to survive their high school years. The success of that one film put Lopez on the filmmaking map, and was promptly followed up by the equally successful Fuck My Life trilogy, as well as the director's first foray into survival horror with Aftershock, co-written with genre buff Eli Roth.Almost ten years later, Lopez returns with Worst Friends Forever, a sequel to his first hit. The trio of Roberto, Condoro, and Papitas (and a little person) are back for more misadventures: out of high school, older, and definitely not wiser. From midget jokes to the "Iron Man Beard", plus the appearance of a DeLorean, this hilarious trailer promises a lot...

What happens to a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub in Chile when a massive earthquake hits? Hint: Nothing good!
Well, except that it gave me the opportunity to sit down with Eli Roth to talk about his new movie Aftershock, in which he stars, co-wrote, and produced. I would say that’s a pretty darn good outcome! Check it out below.
In the middle of a night of wild partying, a hapless American tourist (Roth) and his friends are suddenly plunged into a living hell when a powerful earthquake rips through the coastal town of Valparaíso, Chile.
What do you think it is about travel that sets a good tone for a film?
Eli Roth: Well, travel – Everyone has fantasies of traveling. We all want to escape our lives and go somewhere fun. A lot of times we want to go as far away from...

After an earth quake erupts off the coastal town of Valparaiso, Chile, a group of travelers in an underground night club must reach the surface and discover it’s just the beginning of their nightmare. Gringo (Eli Roth) and his Chilean buddies Ariel (Ariel Lev) and Pollo (Nicolas Martinez) must help Kylie (Lorenza Izzo) and Monica (Andrea Osvart) escape looters, convicts, and the aftershocks that followed. Directed by Nicolas Lopez, ‘Aftershock’ is inspired by true events and real life stories over the Chilean earthquake that hit the country in 2010.
How does it feel to be living your dream, from directing to writing to acting?
Eli Roth: I feel like I’m getting to live my dream and there’s really no better feeling in the world. I think one of the keys to that is that I’ve taken chances and I’ve never played it safe on anything that I’ve ever done.

Thanks to IGN, we now have a restricted trailer for "Aftershock," an earthquake thriller that Eli Roth produced, co-wrote and stars in. It's directed by Nicola Lopez, who is making his English-language debut. His last two films, "Que Pena Tu Vida" and "Que Pena Tu Boda," were the highest-grossing Chilean movies of 2010 and 2011. Check out the trailer below. The story takes place after a massive earthquake that frees prisoners from an insane asylum. It's inspired by Lopez's experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. "We are making a smart elevated disaster genre movie with superb production value, something really big. The film's going to be very scary, very intense, and very real," said Roth. Lopez added: "It's nothing that you could expect. I want this to be my 'Robocop.'" "Aftershock" is set to hit theaters on May 10th, in limited release. Trailer:...

Next week in Miami, hundreds of bloggers, marketers, corporate brand reps, music and film artists will be checking in at the Eden Roc Hotel to attend Hispanicize, a social media platform for today’s Latino innovators. Now in its 4th year, the marketing, interactive, film and music conference was founded by Manny Ruiz, a PR businessman who adopted the term Hispanicize to signify the transformation and growing impact of Latino culture into traditional American mainstream and who created this convergence to amplify the success of diverse voices in social media.
In part modeled after SXSW and Ted Talks, Hispanicize aims to be a digital multi-media launchpad and idea stimulating conference tailored towards Latinos. The event’s core journalistic DNA is confirmed by guest co-chair, Soledad O Brien, who just signed off on her morning CNN show capping off a decade of reporting for the news outlet. For the second year the South Beach setting will host yacht parties, beachside receptions, breakfast and lunch networking, and 100 plus talks, featuring such entrepreneurs in social media like the Latina Mom Bloggers, panels like How Brands and Agencies are Engaging and Collaborating with Latino Bloggers and Getting on Corporate Boards. The heavily sponsored event, (Procter & Gamble is the presenting sponsor) will include a Diversity Tech Leaders Summit presented by Sprint in which the lesser-known business stories of diverse tech and social media entrepreneurs who are making their marks in digital media will be highlighted.
I have to admit I knew nothing of Hispanicize up until a couple months ago. Curious, I went on the website and I found the lingo a tad superfluous and hyperbolic. Words like iconic and mighty are used to describe the young but clearly flourishing event. Then again, this kind of grandiose speak is typical Public Relations so it makes sense given it is a partnership with Hispanic Public Relations Association (Hpra) and the Public Relations Society of America (Prsa).
I reached out to the founder Manny Ruiz to find out more about the mission of the event and found his enthusiasm and excitement for what he considers a pioneering movement infectious. It’s hard to argue that this mass tech and entertainment crossroads gathering makes for an incredible networking opportunity. Ruiz called it a “Uniting of these industries to create a symphony” and went on to note it is much more powerful for bloggers to converge at the same place with journalists, marketers, digital, music and film innovators then if you had them out there individually and remotely. Before I knew it I was put in touch with with Roman Morales, the Film Showcase Organizer and I came onboard as Programmer for the film component. A big reason I stepped in was because I was particularly attracted to presenting Us independent Latino films to an audience heavy with social media influence and bloggers, to see if it would indeed create a higher level of buzz, publicity and exposure from the community.
Along with a special screening of Filly Brown days before its national theatrical release, this year Hispanicize will screen six features including the high profile sneak preview of The Weinstein Company’s Aftershock, the horror comedy produced and starring Eli Roth, directed by Chilean filmmaker Nicolas Lopez (Que Pena tu Vida, Promedio Rojo). Also, straight from SXSW the music industry and character-driven documentary Los Wild Ones about the Wild Records label and family of Mexican rockabilly acts. With the exception of Aftershock, all the films reflect a taste of the diaspora of unique, bi-cultural Us narratives, and notably are all first features. Three of the films, Blaze You Out, Filly Brown and Mission Park are being distributed by Lionsgate labels Pantelion and Grindstone Entertainment. Meanwhile, seeking distribution is Dreamer written and directed by Salvador born Jesse Salmeron, a poignant and timely story starring and produced by Jeremy Ray Valdez about an upwardly mobile American whose paralyzed by the fear of being deported. Los Wild Ones is also seeking distribution and should find considerable traction within and outside hard core music fan circles.
My personal pride and joy however has to be the shorts film showcase. Portraying visionary quests for identity, love, truth and legacy and created by multicultural emergent voices from San Antonio, Miami, La, NYC, Oaxaca and Puerto Rico. This is the medium in which to find provocative, daring and versatile young generation of fresh voices who you can expect will blow up big soon. To name just a few, the filmmakers include Jillian Mayer and Lucas Leyva of the Borscht corporation, Zoé Salicrup Junco, the filmmaker of Gabi who workshopped her feature script of the short at San Antonio’s CineFestival’s Latino Screenwriters Project, Victor Hugo Duran the Colombia Film grad whose short, Fireworks played at the La Film Festival last year and is currently shooting his first feature in Mexico called La Victoria, and Steve Acevedo, the director of El Cocodrilo which is a powerful and urgent film about a journalist played by Jacob Vargas on the run from narcos, who participated in NBCU Directing Fellowship.
I’ll try not to go all Spring Breaker debauchery when I head to Miami next week. I’m very interested in immersing myself in the Hispanicize program to cover the dialogue and scrutinize the impact so stay tuned for my report.
See below to check out full film list and links. Hispanicize will take place April 9 – 13. For information on how to attend and the schedule click here.

It is, it appears, an exciting time to be Eli Roth. A player on the Hollywood scene for over a decade, thanks to the runaway success of Cabin Fever, Roth was propelled to notoriety by the Hostel movies, and earned himself both commercial triumph and critical censure thanks to his seeming status as banner-waver for the so-called torture-porn subgenre that boomed in the Noughties.
Going into a new decade, the torture-porn phenomenon still seems to be going strong, as various film-makers continue to try and shock jaded audiences with ever more creatively-extreme shenanigans. Roth, however, seems set on diversifying his gruesome portfolio, with a spooky exorcism thriller sequel, a cannibal exploitation movie, and a horror TV show; he’s even got an evil clown movie on the horizon. Having attached his name to the well-received The Last Exorcism, it looks like Roth is set upon emphasising that he doesn’t...

Good news for those of you looking forward to seeing Nicolas Lopez’s Aftershock (review)! The flick will be opening in limited theaters on May 10th. That being said... let's get ready to rumble and commit heinous acts of violence, shall we?
Aftershock, an earthquake thriller scripted by Cabin Fever and Hostel's Eli Roth, Nicolas Lopez, and Guillermo Amoedo, revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake.
It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. His last two films, Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, were the highest-grossing Chilean films of 2010 and 2011. Roth most recently produced The Last Exorcism, a microbudget film that grossed $70 million worldwide.
Roth and Lopez wrote the story together, inspired by the latter’s experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. In his first big acting role since Inglourious Basterds,...

Director Nicola Lopez's "Que Pena Tu Vida" and "Que Pena Tu Boda" comedies were the highest-grossing Chilean movies of 2010 and 2011. Apparently Eli Roth (Hostel, The Last Exorcism) is a big fan, because he teamed up with Lopez for an earthquake thriller, called "Aftershock." While "Aftershock" has yet to hit theaters, Lopez's new movie, "Que Pena Tu Familia," is set to be released in Chile on January 3rd. To help promote it, Roth decided to appear as a doctor in a fake telenovela, called "Ataque Al Corazon," that the characters in "Que Pena Tu Familia" watch. Check out the clip below to see Roth as Dr. Zacarias as he spills lots of blood and makes lots of love. Video:...

Aftershock, Eli Roth’s latest venture into the horror genre, reminds us all once more why Roth is the current king of horror.
We saw a bloody set of images back in the summer, just before its debut at Tiff – you can read our review here. And since then, things have been fairly quiet.
But no more. The first trailer has been released over at IGN, giving a great first look at Nicolás López’s upcoming horror.
“In the middle of a night of wild partying, a hapless American tourist (Hostel director Eli Roth) and his friends are suddenly plunged into a living hell when a powerful earthquake rips through the coastal town of Valparaiso, Chile.”
Roth stars alongside Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martinez, Lorenza Izzo, Andrea Osvárt, and Natasha Yarovenko, with an excellent cameo from none other than Selena Gomez herself.

What happens to a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub in Chile when a massive earthquake hits? Hint: Nothing good! Watch this first teaser for director Nicolás López’s Aftershock. The only this more terrifying than mother nature. is human nature.
In Chile, an American tourist’s vacation goes from good to great when he meets some beautiful women travellers. But when an earthquake ravages the underground nightclub they are in, a fun night quickly turns to terror. Escaping to the surface is just the beginning as they face the nightmarish chaos above ground.
The film screened in September at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of their Midnight Madness program.
Aftershock is the unlikely pairing of Chilean director Nicolás López, who burst onto the scene with the geek comedy Promedio rojo, and contemporary horror icon Eli Roth, who co-wrote the script with López as well...

What’s poppin’ post holiday folks?
I’ll tell ya!
Chilewood.
Chilewood is this effort by Eli Roth and Chilean director Nicolas Lopez to create films from Chile for mainstream U.S. audiences and the world at large. Chilewood is a concept — an “alternative filmmaking model,” as Lopez puts it, which prioritizes far lower-budget productions, but still delivers audiences polished storytelling and production values.
Lopez is picking up his Canon 7D, making micro budget genre films in his homeland, giving it a polished look, and pretty much killing the game right now. He has got the right sensibility. Make dope genre films instead of those bullshit high brow arthouse movies with Gael Garcia Bernal that Nobody stateside watches.
Over the holiday, I saw Lopez’s Que Pena Tu Vida on HBO Go, then the hilarious sequel Que Pena Tu Boda on Netflix. The third movie Que Pena Tu Familia drops in Chile next week.

I want this to be my 'Robocop.'" Trailer:...

Some quick acquisition news is coming in from the Toronto International Film Festival as Deadline is reporting that Dimension Films is closing in on a deal to pick up the rights to two different Eli Roth projects, Aftershock and Clown.
The site is reporting that Bob Weinstein’s Dimension Films is near a deal to acquire Aftershock, which is screening at the festival, and Clown, which will start production soon. These are two Eli Roth-produced genre films. Roth stars in Aftershock. It is his first big lead role since he brained Nazis as the Bear Jew in Inglourious Basterds. Supposedly the minimum guarantee commitment is upwards of $2 million for each film, plus a guarantee of a wide theatrical release.

It’s the next "Eli Roth Presents" film, and it marks the English-language debut from director Nicolas Lopez. About a week ago, Eli Roth revealed that he's working on "Aftershock," a movie that he's producing and starring in. It is being directed by Nicola Lopez (Que Pena Tu Vida), who is making his English-language debut. Now, thanks to /Film, we have the first photos. Check them out below. The story revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during an earthquake. Roth and Lopez wrote the story together. It is inspired by the Lopez's experience when an earthquake devastated Chile in 2010. "We are making a smart elevated disaster genre movie with superb production value, something really big. The film's going to be very scary, very intense, and very real," said Roth. Lopez added: "It's nothing that you could expect. I want this to be my 'Robocop.'" Photos: (click to enlarge)...

Did you know that Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz actor Eli Roth was also a Hollywood director, producer and writer? Roth’s highest profile role was the one I just mentioned for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. He has a new project in the works and it just might call for some collaboration with young Miss Selena Gomez. She did say she wanted to focus on her acting as opposed to her music this year, after all.
The project is an “earthquake thriller”, said Deadline, with the working title, Aftershock. It was written by Roth with a little help from Nicolas Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo. It’s slated to become the English-language directorial debut for Nicolas Lopez, director of Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, the highest-grossing films to come out of Chile in both 2010 and 2011.
Here’s to hoping that success translates into English with Aftershock.

Eli Roth is working on his "Aftershock" movie, which he's producing and Nicola Lopez is directing. The project marks Lopez's English-language debut. Roth is playing the lead, the biggest role of his acting career since "Inglourious Basterds." Among the other cast is Selena Gomez. "We are making a smart elevated disaster genre movie with superb production value, something really big. The film's going to be very scary, very intense, and very real," said Roth. Unless you happen to be from Chile, you might not have ever heard of director Nicolas Lopez. But chances are you soon will. After creating the top grossing Chilean films in both 2010 and 2011 with Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda, the director is next moving on to helm Aftershock, the newest film from Eli Roth. This one is a disaster movie that Roth and Lopez wrote together, and that Roth will be starring in. Apparently the idea for the film came to Lopez after his country was hit with a pretty bad earthquake back in 2010, but it’s got some of Roth’s horror sensibility in there as well. The story is largely about dangerous patients that escape an insane asylum after the quake. If horror fans have any sort of issue with getting some Lopez mixed in with their Roth, then maybe this awesome quote from the director will assuage your fears: “I...

A bidding war has begun for the rights to Aftershock, a genre thriller from Chilean director Nicolas Lopez that stars and is being produced by Eli Roth, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo. Deadline, which reports the multiple offers for film rights, says The Weinstein Company and Relativity Media are the top contenders in the race for distribution, but that a sale hasn.t yet been finalized. Why the interest? Well, Aftershock marks the English-language debut of Lopez, whose previous two films -- Que Pena Tu Vida and Que Pena Tu Boda -- were the highest-grossing Chilean films in 2010 and 2011, respectively. .I.ve been a huge fan of Nicolas Lopez since his remarkable debut, Promedio Rojo, and have watched him grow into one of the best young filmmakers out there,. Roth said. .This collaboration marks the beginning of what we call Chilewood, making genre films for...

I’m told that several distributors are in talks, with the Weinstein Company and Relativity Media among them. The dealmaking will likely take place in Berlin, where, after the success of small-budget genre films like Chronicle and The Last Exorcism, these movies are becoming a license to print money. I’ve heard from potential buyers that the plot revolves around an insane asylum on an island, where the inmates escape during the quake. Roth and Lopez wrote the story together,...

It is more than a little bit surprising how few filmmakers have made any attempt to give any sort of realistic representation of how social media has affected the lives of young people today. It's even more surprising considering that these young people are the primary targets for most films. But other than finding a quick excuse to dispose of cell phones in most horror films, the omnipresence of communications technology and social media is rarely addressed. Nicolas Lopez did it to great effect with Fuck My Life. Charlie Brooker found social media's dark side in the riveting - and far too plausible - first episode of Black Mirror. But, really, that's about it.But now Indonesia is getting into the game - and doing...

Chilean director Nicolas Lopez has an eventful 2010. His romantic comedy Fuck My Life (Que Pena Tu Vida) become the top grossing film of the year in Chile, playing to great success on the international festival circuit and landing a remake deal with Lionsgate. Then Eli Roth signed him up to direct earthquake horror picture Aftershock. Not a bad year, all in all, but before Lopez made the step into a big, English language production he wanted to spend a bit more time with the characters of his original hit. And so the dating comedy developed further into a wedding comedy and Lopez launched into production on Fuck My Wedding (Que Pena Tu Boda). Javier (Ariel Levy) plans a hurried marriage with Angela (Andrea Velasco),...

Director: Nicolás López Writers: Nicolás López, Guillermo Amoedo Starring: Ariel Levy, Lucy Cominetti, Andrea Velasco, Paz Bascuñan, Leonor Varela, Matías Lopez, Nicolas Martinez, Ramon Llao, Ignacia Allamand, Claudia Celedón Javier (Ariel Levy) is a young advertising professional who has fallen in love with Sofia (Lucy Cominetti). Javier and Sofia's love life starts off a bit rocky, but their relationship matures into two years of approximate bliss. Eventually, though, Javier becomes bored and breaks up with Sofia -- he instantly regrets that decision. Most of writer-director Nicolás López's Fuck My Life takes place after their break up, as Javier alternates between moping pathetically and pathetically attempting to win Sofia back. Throughout his emotional roller coaster, Javier's best friend since childhood, Angela (Andrea Velasco), serves as his sole support; she also has a keen knack for telling him the truth, no matter how brutally honest it is. Most importantly -- at...

Breaking up with someone is hard enough without the whole world knowing about it. It was only a few years ago that this kind of public humiliation was reserved for celebrities and those famous enough to warrant magazine covers. But now, thanks to online social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter, anyone can be immediately lauded or harpooned in front of anyone with an Internet connection.

One of the nicer surprises of SXSW this year was discovering that the movie 'F*** My Life' ('Que Pena Tu Vida'), despite the title, was a downright sweet and practically adorable romantic comedy. Chilean writer/director Nicolas Lopez's previous film was a comic-book superhero film, 'Santos,' and this is quite different in story but with the same light touch.
Javier (Ariel Levy) is a young advertising professional whose best friend since childhood is Angela. They text each other almost continually, asking for advice and support ... or in Angela's case, cracking wise. Javier falls for Sofia (Lucy Cominetti), a lovely singer, and while the beginning of their relationship is a bit rocky, they have two years of bliss until he feels stifled and breaks up. He regrets this almost immediately, so most of the story is about his attempts to win her back,...

What’s in a name?
Apparently, when it comes to the latest film from writer/director Nicolas Lopez, it means a lot.
Entitled Que Pena Tu Vida (Fuck My Life, or Fml from here on out), this marks the third film for Spanish director Lopez, and is his take on one of the most maligned and pastiched genres around: the romantic comedy.
Drawing seemingly direct inspiration from Marc Webb’s fantastic 500 Days Of Summer, Fml follows a couple as they meet, fall in love, break up, and move on in today’s social landscape. Told through a series of flashbacks connected through interviews with the characters, the film is very much a direct descendant of many modern anti-romantic comedies/dramas, and is ultimately a welcome addition to this otherwise stale genre.
Ultimately, the film’s biggest star is its sense of humor. Based on a script by Lopez and script “advisor” Guillermo Amoedo,...

The 2011 SXSW Film Festival will feature the North American premiere of Marie Losier‘s The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, a much-anticipated documentary that chronicles the love story of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife Lady Jaye. Screening times have not been released yet, but the festival runs this year on March 11-19 at its regular home of Austin, Texas.
Genesis and Lady Jaye had a unique relationship in which, in addition to getting married, they attempted to meld together as a single pandrogynous entity known as Breyer P-Orridge. (The “Breyer” portion of the name coming from Jaye’s maiden name.) The couple both underwent plastic surgery and hormone therapy together, as well as starting to cross-dress and adopt perfectly identical mannerisms and behaviors.
Unfortunately, Jaye passed away in 2007, although Genesis continues to live his life as Breyer P-Orridge.

Regardless of what you might think about Eli Roth as a director or an actor, you have to admit, he generally seems like a pretty cool, down-to-earth guy. He's basically just a movie fan who lucked out with his first feature film, Cabin Fever, and managed to secure a reputation in the industry. From there he has been using his fame to help other filmmakers out ever since, for example as a producer on Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism, and now he is teaming up with a couple of filmmakers who made a fake trailer with Roth's name on it and put it on YouTube. Aspiring directors, take note: this is apparently a good way to get noticed in Hollywood! After seeing the trailer for a fictional horror film called Clown, about a father who dons a costume for his son's birthday party, Roth got in touch with commercial...
