Chicago – “Clint Eastwood: 20 Film Collection” is a great Father’s Day gift that’s nonetheless a bit difficult to describe. It’s not exactly a greatest hits collection of its legendary star since it’s missing some of his most iconic films and includes some of his most notable failures. At the same time, every Eastwood fan would be happy to have at least half of these films in their collection and there’s no better way to do it then this set. It also may allow for some reevaluation and reappreciation of some of Eastwood’s less-beloved movies. I wish that Warner Bros. had taken the opportunity to upgrade a few Eastwood films that still need HD restoration but there’s enough brilliance in this box that it’s tough to complain.

In celebration of their 90th Anniversary, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released the Clint Eastwood 20 Film Collection on Blu-Ray this week. Included here are, as the title says, 20 of the legend’s films as well as two excellent documentaries: Eastwood Factor and Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story. Additionally, the set also comes with a nice little hardcover book that looks at the filmmaker’s illustrious career.
With five Academy Awards under his belt and over $2 billion at the domestic box office, the man is no doubt a legend and with this new Blu-Ray box set, there’s no better time than now to celebrate Clint Eastwood and the impact that he has had on the film world.
Though not the greatest selection, here are the 20 films that you’ll receive. Now, remember, this is a Warner Bros. release, meaning it was released to honour the actor/director’s relationship with the studio.

Clint Eastwood’s thirty-fourth outing as director sees him reunited with his Invictus star Matt Damon for Oscar nominated screenwriter Peter Morgan’s tale of near-death experience and the curse of psychic abilities.
Damon is the retired ‘reader’ who is able, through touch, to speak to people who have died, conveying messages of comfort or instruction to those left behind. It bills itself as a supernatural drama but this is far more normal than paranormal and for a film which claims to address an issue that everyone in the world can relate to keeps the focus on a small group of people and rarely looks beyond.
It conveys its message jarringly, with the enormous CG heavy opening scene of the Indian Ocean Tsunami looking distressingly real as it mixes with two other stories across the world, only to bring them altogether in London in a barely credible fashion. Cecile De France...

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Clint Eastwood excels at creating deep stories about the human condition. Whether an old, racist curmudgeon joins a community he once feared or an old, curmudgeon with a flair for Gaelic culture trains a woman to box, Eastwood’s films have been simple stories grounded in real-world prejudices filled with powerful performances. With Hereafter he departs from his typical fare in favor of the supernatural, and whether the film benefits or suffers from this new addition is secondary to the fact that the story isn’t as tight and focused as Eastwood’s past endeavors. This isn’t your typical Eastwood film in terms of content, however the strength Matt Damon and Cecile de France in the lead remind you just how skilled Clint is at working with talented actors.

Chicago – Every once in awhile the question arises as to which films that were reviewed poorly today will be reappraised in future years as much-better than their first reviews suggested. We always read about movies now considered classics that were underappreciated when they were released and wonder what the equivalent movies will be from today. Let me submit Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” recently on DVD and Blu-ray, as a likely candidate.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Part of the problem with response to “Hereafter” is that it was a very difficult film to market. Most of the commercials tried to sell Matt Damon in a M. Night Shyamalan-esque supernatural thriller. That’s not this movie. Damon’s story is only a third of the action, another third is subtitled, and the supernatural elements are more for dramatic dissection than thrills. This is a film that would be widely praised if it was...

Last Tuesday, the South By Southwest Film Festival was in full swing and demanded our attention, which is why we were unable to provide you some picks of the week (although we assume you survived). But this week’s offerings feel a little bit like a festival of sorts, thanks to the remarkable variety of titles being offered by studios and distributors, including new releases like Clint Eastwood’s latest, “Hereafter,” low-budget fare like “Jackson County Jail,” animated programming like “The Venture Bros.,...

Hereafter is a curious look at mediums, the afterlife, and theoretically life, that has such a broad, hopeless effort at its core, that most audiences will be left wondering what they are meant to get from it. Whatever one comes away with, it's hard to say that Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood give less than solid turns in their roles as actor and director, but whether or not that ultimately amounts to anything is another story altogether.
Damon plays George, as regular a guy as you could want to stumble across, except for his special gift. He can see dead people. A true medium, George can touch people, and connect with their lost relatives, but he's given up on his talent by the time we meet him, apparently due to the trouble that arises from such things. Unsurprisingly, he is pushed by many to share his special talent with the world.

It’s a bit bloated and unwieldy, but I have to admit that I have quite a fondness for Richard Attenborough’s biopic Chaplin (Lionsgate, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$19.99 Srp), starring Robert Downey Jr as the Little Tramp - and his wonderful performance alone makes the film worth watching. Bonus materials include featurettes and a brief Chaplin home movie.
Got more kitchen utensils than space? Countertops and drawers at a premium?...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. The Fighter [*Warning: Obvious spoiler ahead*] Great care was paid to ensure that The Fighter be as authentic a true story as possible, which is also why its ending feels a tad misguided. Was it necessary to close the film on a note of uplifting triumph? That's the expected conclusion, certainly, and it's not as though there's ever a moment where The Fighter seems like it might be veering down a path that hasn't already been laid out for it in countless other sports films. But the humanity of the picture stems from its acrid family dynamics, and it's in those moments that the film transcends the genre in which it's forced to reside. In fact, so much time is dedicated...

If you thought every great film had already maxed out its possibilities on home video (you know, VHS, DVD, special editon DVD, anniversary edition DVD, Blu-ray, special edition Blu-ray… and so on), well, you’d be mistaken.
This year proved another great year for high profile DVD and Blu-ray releases, and what better time to run through the 2010′s highlights than during holiday shopping mania?
Some of the films on this list are Blu-ray debuts, some are fan favorites packaged with collectible gewgaws and one set is a whopper too big to ignore. They all have one undeniable thing in common: someone you know wants one of them wrapped with a bow.
9. Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years
Make someone’s day with this handsome collection of Eastwood’s 35-year relationship with Warner Bros. — from “Where Eagles Dare” through “Invictus.” Included in the set are the octogenarian’s “Dirty Harry” movies,...

On Friday July 9, The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City presents the opening of The Complete Clint Eastwood. Eastwood biographer Richard Schickel will appear in person on July 9 to introduce his recent feature-length documentary The Eastwood Factor. On July 10, attendees will get the chance to converse with Eastwood via a Skype hookup. The festival continues until July 27 with screenings of major Eastwood films, though the Complete Eastwood festival is by no means complete- there are key movies such as Where Eagles Dare and Kelly's Heroes that are not included in the program. Still, this is a superb opportunity to celebrate the Oscar-winner's career and enjoy his movies the way they were meant to be seen: on the big screen. Click here for details...

As a follow-up to the equally stunning Planet Earth, the BBC’s Life (BBC, Not Rated, DVD-$59.98 Srp) is just as incredible in regards to the footage they were able to capture of the animals that populate this planet of ours. My only regret is that Americans are stuck with the crappy Oprah Winfrey narration, while the Brits get the far superior Sir David Attenborough.. Or so it was on TV.
