The Sam Raimi-produced dystopian action thriller Boy Kills World is set to unleash pure mayhem at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 9. Boy Kills World stars Bill Skarsgård in the title role, the deaf and mute Boy, who embarks on a relentless quest for revenge. Boy’s vengeance is aided by a mentor in the form of a strange shaman, played by The Raid and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’s Yayan Ruhian. Judging by these behind-the-scenes images from Moritz Mohr’s feature debut, Boy and his Mentor are sure to rack up quite an impressive body count.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Asian action star Tony Jaa has signed to appear in Fast and Furious 7.
The Thai actor, who is best known for the Ong Bak series, will make his English-language debut in the next instalment of the Universal franchise, claims The Hollywood Reporter.
Jaa will star alongside Jason Statham, who has been confirmed as the villain in the car heist drama opposite series veterans Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
As well as being the first English language film Jaa has starred in, Fast and Furious 7 will be his first outing with a major studio.
He said in an email: "I have been a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise. The films are fast-paced, fun and keep the audience involved.
"There is a great mix of humour and action, something I really appreciate. There is no better film to be involved in for a first Us studio production."

Does anyone else remember when Tony Jaa walked off the set of Ong Bak 2 and into the jungle? He would later come back, of course, and finish not only Ong Bak 2 but a third movie, as well. It was one of those too-strange stories of production madness that seem to have followed the martial arts star throughout his career. Since the completion of Ong Bak 3 and its subsequent release in 2010, it’s been quiet-goings for Jaa, who has long been compared to action titans like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. The only major difference between Jaa and those other fine men is that while his films have travelled well into the United States, he himself has never crossed into Hollywood work. That ends soon for the Thai man of action, as he’s signed on to join Fast and Furious 7. Nope, that’s not a typo. “I have been a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise...

Throw international martial arts badass Tony Jaa (“Ong Bak”) and low-budget 80s action icon Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables,” “Red Scorpion”) into a movie together and you immediately have my attention. And that movie is “A Man Will Rise.” The other day, we had a few pictures from the set, but little to no actual information about the film, formerly titled “Local Hero.” Well now we’re back with even more photos, and whole bunch of news. And this isn’t just news, this is news that will pique your interest, especially if you enjoy watching people get pummeled about the head and face. First off, Tony Jaa is not only the star of “A Man Will Rise,” he’s also directing. This is his third venture behind the camera, as he helmed both “Ong Bak 2” and “Ong Bak 3.” He’s also bringing his old pal Panna Rittikrai (co-director of the two aforementioned films,...

Man of Steel
Directed by: Zack Snyder
Starring: Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Amy Adams
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: June 14, 2013
Trailer Scores: 8/10
Thoughts by Tsr: I’m not sure what I expected from the first teaser for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, but it wasn’t this. There are the Terrence Malick-esque shots (such as the butterfly on the swing set), and the stuff with Kal-El trying to find himself on a fishing boat is reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. Don’t get me wrong, with Nolan producing I expected we’d have a more subdued Snyder. I just didn’t expect it to be on this level. I do wish the teaser had a bit more of Zack Snyder’s DNA on display, but that can come later. At this stage I really like what it’s going for. Now...

It’s been a while since we seen Thai international superstar Tony Jaa, best known for his work on the groundbreaking Ong Bak films & 2005′s Tom Yum Goong or The Protector in the west. So why the hold up, as of May 28th 2010 Jaa had left the film industry & was ordained as a Buddhist monk. After his 2011 return, Jaa started production re – teaming up with action director Prachya Pinkaew. This is his third film along side him and fans worldwide are expecting big things from this film.
So why was the first material scrapped for the movie? When it was 40% of the way through production at present? Tony Jaa during production was to get married, which held back production, then there were rumors flying about the material wasn’t good enough, so they wanted to re-shoot the movie again. Piranha 3Dd
Directed by: John Gulager
Starring: David Hasselhoff, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames
Rating: R
Release Date: 2012
Trailer Score: 1/10
Thoughts by Tsr: I saw the first Piranha 3D and I will never be able to get the image of Jerry O’Connell, with his eviscerated legs and genitals, out of my mind. It’s not something I would like to remember. This teaser looks almost identical to the teaser for the first film, only it swaps Richard Dreyfuss for David Hasselhoff. This is just as well because it felt like Dreyfuss was slumming, whereas this is actually a step up for Hasselhoff. This time, even fewer punches are pulled, making sure to focus on large, fake breasts hanging off faceless women. The shot of Rhames with the leg from Planet Terror looks particularly cynical. I know it’s meant to be tongue in cheek, but the unrelenting misogyny of the trailer (and yes,...

[Rec] 3 Genesis
Directed by: Paco Plaza
Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martin, Javier Botet
Rating: Nr
Release Date: March 30, 2012
Trailer Score: 7/10
Thoughts by Tsr: It’s not easy to sell me on a teaser trailer. My boyish curiosity tends to find them frustrating and, as a whole, uninteresting. That being said, I will admit my bias as a fan of the previous two films in [Rec] series and an avid horror fan, but even knowing all that, [Rec] 3 Genesis definitely tapped into something.
The easiest comparison is to the ad campaign of the second movie Resident Evil franchise where it started out as a make-up ad before the young woman decayed in front of your eyes? Does anybody remember the one I’m talking about? Anyways, [Rec] 3 Genesis employs that same kind of trickery. You think it’s going to be some sort of madcap romance before it devolves into something grotesque.

Swinging With the Finkels
Directed by: Jonathan Newman
Starring: Martin Freeman, Mandy Moore, Jonathan Silverman
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: August 26, 2011 (limited)
Trailer Score: 3/10
Thoughts by Tsr: I like Freeman, who was great on the UK’s The Office, but wow this is a weird trailer. A (very attractive) couple becomes bored with their marriage and decides to start swinging. It looks like the whole film is about finding someone to swing with. This trailer is kind of weird, it sort of explains what the film is about but then sort of ends, I don’t know what it’s supposed to be saying. A married couple tries to find a couple to swing with and…? What they showed doesn’t look that great, or particularly funny. I’m surprised it’s being distributed, it seems like the company does not care about this movie. By the way, why is Jonathan Silverman billed first?...

Back in April (here), it was announced that Tony Jaa would be returning to Thai films in The Protector 2, after his “retirement”. It’s beginning to look like The Protector 2 just might be the end-all-be-all of ass-kicking movies, with the cast of martial artists director Prachya Pinkaew is lining up for the film, which will be in 3D. Joining Jaa, is Chocolate‘s Jija Yanin of course, and newly added to the cast are: Dan Chupong (Dynamite Warrior, Ong Bak 3), Kazu Tang (Bko: Bangkok Knockout) and American martial artist Marrese Crump (RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists).

In many ways "Bangkok Knockout" is the perfect film for Fantasia (or any other similarly themed genre fest), but let's be clear: the latest from "Ong Bak 2" and "Ong Bak 3" director Panna Rittikrai is terrible in almost every conceivable technical, narrative and aesthetic category. It's atrociously acted, with a derivative, absurd story shot with no real skill except in making sure that when two characters are speaking to each other, they are both in the frame. However, when it's time for the fights--which are frequent, exciting and amazingly staged, Rittikrai is firmly in his element and the audience…...

The Devil’s Double
Directed by: Lee Tamahori
Starring: Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier, Raad Rawi
Rating: R
Release Date: August 12, 2011
Trailer Score: 5/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Even after watching this trailer, it’s a little hard to know what to think of The Devil’s Double. On the one hand, I think that it could very well be one of the most promising films of 2011. It’s an interesting concept and it is certainly a story that deserves to be told.
On the other hand, I’m a little nervous about the way that they’re choosing to tell it. First and foremost, Dominic Cooper may have been the most talented man for the job, but I find it a little hard to believe that there were no Middle Eastern men who were cut out for the job. Without getting too political, The Devil’s Double has a very Westernized approach to the material.

Much like the final product may resemble, this trailer is a flurry of images that look appealing, but don’t seem to tie together much. Meaning, I have very little idea what the story could be for this trailer after a couple of glances, but at least my eyes are curious about the visuals. Hmm. Muay Thai Giant. This is a weird one. Thai action cinema has become very well respected around the world over the last 8 years, ever since Tony Jaa and Ong Bak burst on the scene. In its wake, we've seen things like The Bodyguard, Born To Fight, Chocolate, Tom Yum Goong, and many others get a fair amount of press among genre fans around the world. However, for every Ong Bak, there is an Ong Bak 3. Not every action film can be a winner, and it seems like some really bad ideas are getting green lit, I think Muay Thai Giant, Aka Somtum, fits in that category.Seven foot gentle giant Barney Emerald (Nathan Jones) is drugged and robbed while on holiday in Pattaya. Dear God, please let that be a yes. Seeing the two of these guys team up on-screen would blow my tender little mind into tiny bite-sized fragments all over the back of my living room wall. In fact, my grieving wife may have to sell my entire kung fu collection in order to have my sizzling brain matter thoroughly cleansed from our comfy, well-worn sofa. Of course, most of the details surrounding this unconfirmed collaboration are sketchy at best, but it’s certainly given yours truly enough material for the sweetest of martial arts daydreams. Can you feel my giddiness permeating the screen? I wouldn’t be surprised. According to Twitch, rumors are starting to trickle out regarding this mystery project, though, as I stated before, details are hard to come by. Apparently Jaa has left his self-imposed exile following the release of “Ong Bak 3″, and his contract with Sahamongkol is about to expire.

Ong Bak 3 Movie: Disc: Click here to read the dvd review! Action fans were salivating at the thought of modern masters Dan Chupong and Tony Jaa facing off, but that particular fight is a bit of a let-down, especially coming after an excellent scene in which Jaa actually enlists the aid of elephants in fighting off an army of Chupong's followers.

Puss, one of the characters in the later Shrek films gets his own spinoff, presumably about his earlier adventures before he got involved with ogres and donkeys. He looks more like a cross between Zorro and Casanova then the fairy tale character, wooing the ladies, rupturing pinatas, dodging bulls. I think it’s pretty clear the film will be set in Spain, or at least the Spain-esque part of Far, Far Away. I can’t say it got me excited about the movie though, I think I’m still recovering from the mess that was Shrek Forever After. Still, it doesn’t come out for months, maybe the next trailer will change my mind.

Rochester, NY - Ever wonder why schools today stink compared to decades ago? Every think tank moron has their dubious reasonings that appeases their corporate masters. But the truth is extraordinarily simple: Schools dumped their education films.
Do you remember those days when the gym teacher had to pad out health class by wheeling in the 16mm projector from the Av department? They’d thread up classic tales about your body, narcotics, driving safety and manners. Things which kids nowadays can’t seem to handle.
When the Vcr arrived in schools, the 16mm projector was quickly dumped as teaching tool.
Where did these classic films go? Many arrived at the city dump. However a few lucky tens of thousands found themselves on the racks of the Av Geeks Archive. This repository of cinematic education is overseen by Skip Elsheimer. He started collecting the films after I moved out of the infamous PineHaus.

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Waiting For "Superman" The impassioned, well-meaning Waiting for "Superman" prods at an important and disconcerting issue: the failure of the American school system. But that's all it really does. It prods and points fingers, blaming unions and funding conflicts, all the while tossing out animated statistics to highlight how severe the problem is. Interspersed between this are heart-on-sleeve stories of five families hoping to gain entry to overcrowded charter schools, the procedure for which requires public school students to take place in a lottery. It's a deeply depressing process, and the film's frustration is justified. So what's the solution? Waiting for "Superman" has some half-hearted ideas about what needs to be done, but very little (if any...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Paranormal Activity 2 Paranormal Activity 2 is a sequel that didn't need to exist. But since it does, I'm glad it happens to be as good a sequel as anybody could've reasonably hoped for. I recognize there are those who find it far less scary than the first film, and though I can respect the reasoning from a pacing and build-up standpoint, I can't quite fathom the logic behind it. Perhaps the problem is that I don't have any fear of ghostly supernatural forces—especially not ones inclined to spookily open doors and occasionally thump on walls. In Paranormal Activity 2, the terror becomes real, because the family is being legitimately terrorized. And by subverting expectations of...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Eagle – Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland
Gnomeo and Juliet – James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith
Just Go with It – Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never – Justin Bieber, Boys II Men, Miley Cyrus
In Her Skin – Guy Pearce, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto (limited)
Movie of the Week
The Eagle
The Stars: Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland
The Plot: In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavors to honor his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden emblem.
The Buzz: It didn’t blow me away, but the trailer for The Eagle did make me want to check this one out in the theater. The cinematography and filming locales of The Eagle look to be fantastic. The score in the trailer was fairly derivative; standard music to augment the excitement and adventure that such a film promises.

Tony Jaa kicks ass and elephants in Ong Bak 3, out from Magnet this week. Big fan of this series and particularly like the decision to go back in time, giving the films a primordial, almost mythic vibe.
Big week for horror fans as Anchor Bay is releasing their I Spit on Your Grave remake along with Meir Zarchi's original 1978 version on Blu-ray for the first time ever. The other big title is of course Paranormal Activity 2, which proved to be a worthy followup and show that the franchise still has potential to make a big pile o' cash.
Wes Craven's My Soul to Take, his first feature as writer and director since 1994's New Nightmare is out this week. The 3D teen thriller in was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I've never been a huge Craven fan anyway, so don't take my word for it.

I haven't done a DVD release post for a few weeks now, mainly because it was getting too time-consuming and monotonous to list out all of the week's releases, but I'm trying out something a little different this time around by using an Amazon widget as an easy way of presenting them to you. (Keep in mind if you buy anything through the widget, you're also supporting Film Junk!) This week's releases are pretty heavy on the genre side of things with Paranormal Activity 2, the remake of I Spit on Your Grave, and Wes Craven's My Soul to Take all hitting stores, not to mention Ong Bak 3. However, there is also It's Kind of a Funny Story starring Zach Galifianakis, the online porn comedy Middle Men starring Luke Wilson, and for the first time on Blu-ray, the overlooked John Hughes classic Uncle Buck! Will you be buying or renting anything this week?...

Wow, there's no shortage of new releases this week. I'm not even sure where to start! Oh, wait, yes I do. Foreign films. We have Ong Bak 3, from the impressive Tony Jaa. And we have Wild Target, which I'd like to get my hands on to do a review for you. And there's another one called Hideaway (Le refuge), which I'm not familar with, but it looks good.
From the domestic side, we have several releases, including a few we were able to view in theaters. Probably the one I'm closest to is Paranormal Activity 2, which is one of the first movies I've reviewed for Get The Big Picture. And to think that was just at the end of October! My, how time flies. We also have Life as We Know It, My Soul to Take, and You Again reviewed, in case you missed them in theaters and were looking at renting them.

Paranormal Activity 2
After becoming the horror film to see at midnight, this follow-up tries to live up to the scary unpredictability of the first smash hit film, but just upping the volume and ghostly happenings proved to be a little more of the same, ending with mixed results. My Soul to Take
I think this Wes Craven wanna-be new slasher franchise was a huge victim of horror movie over-population in October last year, as well as a victim of the post-conversion 3D backlash.

Amarcord (Criterion Collection) Criterion has been a bit behind on their shipments recently and I haven't yet received Amarcord, but did finally receive The Double Life of Veronique and have been told Amarcord is on the way. That said, I am pretty much ready to recommend this Blu-ray release right now, I am just curious to see how it's packaged. I have the two-disc DVD set and it is an impressive package including a great 64-page booklet. I'm wondering if they will do the same for the Blu-ray with packaging similar to that of the Night of the Hunter Blu-ray or if they'll cut an essay out to make it fit the typical Criterion Blu-ray plastic case. I'll know soon enough, but this is one hell of a great movie from a director I absolutely love. Either way, find...

There’s a whole lot of everything to choose from this week. Criterion serves up the 2008 Japanese gem Still Walking along with a fine dose of Fellini with Amarcord, while on the opposite end we are graced by the release of Panela Anderson’s Barb Wire on blu-ray. One of my favorite animated flicks on 2010, How To Train Your Dragon, hits store shelves and there’s a Samsung 3D starter version of the blu-ray disc available with certain 3D TV purchases. Doesn’t that make you want to run out and throw down $3000? Both versions of I Spit On Your Grave hit blu-ray and DVD, but I still prefer my Millennium Edition DVD featuring a commentary by Joe Bob Briggs. Two “rivers” converge on blu-ray for you viewing pleasure and Thelma & Louise get the anniversary treatment.

Sean Bean once again puts on the chain mail and picks up a sword in the new occult thriller and action adventure film, Black Death from Magnet Releasing (Monsters, Ong Bak 3, Hobo With A Shotgun). The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife. In this apocalyptic environment, the church is losing its grip on the people. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric (Sean Bean), a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. He enlists the guidance of a novice monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne) to lead him and his band of mercenary...

I love Tony Jaa. He's a goddamn dynamo. When Jackie Chan lost his balls to the same kiddie grinder that claimed Eddie Murphy and Ice Cube, I fretted that there'd be a lack of a does-his-own-stunts acrobatic martial artist. And along came Jaa. Watching him flip around and smash things with his elbows and knees, careening off temple walls and marketplace stalls like Tinkerbell on meth, it's a motherfucking joy to behold. But somewhere between Ong Bak: the Thai Warrior and this film, he burned out in a big fucking way. The slip started under extreme pressure during the filming of the second film, which I despite a confubbling plot I adored, merely because Jaa ended the film kicking the shit out of All The Ninjas. All one hundred thousand. But in the latest installment, Jaa's lost prince warrior is beaten and broken, and infused with the noble spirit of Buddha,...

We have a new winner for number one! The Green Hornet! The Green Hornet drove The Black Beauty straight to the top with a whopping $33,526,876 in 3,584 theaters with the second highest per theater average of $9,355 in the first week of release from Sony. (And you will never guess which film had the highest, but you will find out.) The Green Hornet threw True Grit off the number one saddle and moved it to number three. Universal.s release of The Dilemma drove right into the number two slot putting Little Fockers into the corner in number six. Last week.s number three, Season Of The Witch, flew down to number ten in the short lived top three position. Tron:legacy is still hanging on to it.s light cycle at the number seven slot after being out for five weeks now. Films that fell out of the top ten are Tangled and Country Strong.

After increasing its theater count from 40 to 230, Blue Valentine easily led all limited releases over the four-day Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Newcomer The Heart Specialist was relatively lifeless, though it managed to edge out Bollywood movie Yamla Pagla Deewana by opening in five times as many locations. Further down the chart, Barney's Version had a solid initial session on the same weekend where it received a surprise award victory.Blue Valentine earned $1.7 million for the four-day period, bringing its total to $3.2 million. Despite more than doubling its total from last weekend, it actually dipped from 16th to 17th on the overall weekend chart. With a decent per-theater average of $6,029, the movie's chances of substantial further expansion will likely be based on whether or not stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams earn Academy Award nominations next Tuesday. The first weekend of 2011 was pretty lackluster (for some reason, people didn't flock to "Season of the Witch," which will undoubtedly become a cult classic that will be far better respected years down the line — it'll be the "Blade Runner" of medieval sorcery movies), but this weekend promises to blow the doors off your local cinema (it helps that there's an extra day in there thanks to Monday's holiday). This weekend marks the opening of a handful of new films, including the Ron Howard-directed comedy "The Dilemma," the Paul Giamatti-lead drama "Barney's Version" and the Norwegian gangster flick "A Somewhat Gentle Man." It's an especially fruitful weekend if you like watching dudes getting kicked in the head, as you have the opportunity to see Tony Jaa's "Ong Bak 3" as well as the splashy action comedy "The Green Hornet."

We've got a couple of fairly high profile January releases in theatres this weekend with Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet and Ron Howard's The Dilemma starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. Neither of them seem to be garnering particularly favourable reviews, but they should at least draw a crowd. We also have a handful of smaller releases including Barney's Version starring Paul Giamatti and Tony Jaa's Ong Bak 3, the latter of which is playing on just a few screens but is also available on VOD. Additional selections include a pair of documentaries (Plastic Planet, Hood to Coast) and Norwegian crime comedy A Somewhat Gentle Man starring Stellan Skarsgard. One thing is perfectly clear with Ong Bak 3: The Final Battle, which is an adequate follow-up to the superior Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (here), is that Tony Jaa is the most thrilling, dynamic martial art film star since Bruce Lee.
I’ve seen them all, and while through their longevity in a different film world than Jaa, it’s clear that Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donny Yen, and others have better well-rounded films, their talents seem so stiff compared to the grace and ferociousness of Tony Jaa. Ong Bak 3 also has a bit of sadness to it, with life imitating art and visa versa. Jaa’s character of Tien seeks pure enlightenment or Arahat after facing much punishment, anger, rage, by the end of Ong Bak 2, which is very curious as Tony Jaa has sought ordination to be a monk in a Buddhist temple in Surin,...
