Back in the day, folks thought that Enrico Caruso had the greatest voice in opera history. Whether or not this is true we'll never know, as the quality of the recordings of his and other voices simply stinks compared to more recent ones. With "Lucia di Lammermoor", however, you get something most unusual....you get to see AND hear Caruso singing an aria with a group of other singers. No, it's not JUST Caruso...but you do get a general idea of his singing prowess.
The song in this is by Gaetano Donizetti and was from his opera, "Lucia di Lammermoor". While it was supposed to be a story set in Scotland, the costumes look to be 16th or 17th century Italian or French. Regardless, the group sings and the song is one most likely familiar to opera lovers.
It's hard to assess this compared to newer operas...but it is historically important and worth seeing.
