He played iconic roles like Frankenstein's monster and Imhotep (aka The Mummy), but Boris Karloff also instilled life in so many other intriguing characters, including Morgan in The Old Dark House, coming to Blu-ray (in a 4K restoration), DVD, and digital platforms this October from the Cohen Film Collection:
Press Release: Charles S. Cohen, Chairman and CEO of Cohen Media Group, today announced that the landmark thriller The Old Dark House, starring Boris Karloff, will be released by the Cohen Film Collection on Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms on October 24, 2017. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out. And if you're into box office and how movies might do, come play some of the box office games at EZ1 Productions including their new Pick 5 game!
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island won the weekend, and honestly, the Weekend Warrior’s original prediction of $61.6 million was pretty darn close to the movie’s opening weekend which ended up at $61 million. (Unfortunately, I chickened out on Thursday because my prediction was so much higher than all others and lowered it to $58 million, which was Still closer to than every other prediction last weekend.) Also, as expected (at least by me), Hugh Jackman’s Logan took a 2nd weekend tumble as has been the case with most X-Men movies,...

In The House (15)
(François Ozon, 2012, Fra) Fabrice Luchini, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ernst Umhauer, Emmanuelle Seigner. 105 mins
A French teacher is instantly drawn in by a student's essay on infiltrating his friend's family, and so are we. Before we know it, we're swept off on a self-reflexive journey into storytelling, voyeurism and ethical boundaries. Both the boy's story and the movie struggle to find an ending, but it's another distinctly "Ozonian" comedy-thriller.
Trance (15)
(Danny Boyle, 2013, UK) James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel. 101 mins
Boyle chucks everything he can (maybe too much) at this twisty, visceral art-heist thriller, which hinges on McAvoy's hypnosis to reveal the whereabouts of a stolen Goya painting. The result is more of a Jackson Pollock.
Good Vibrations (15)

Terrence Malick. Mateo Garrone. Rian Johnson. Noah Baumbach. Joss Whedon. Neil Jordan. Francois Ozon. Joe Wright. Thomas Vinterbeg. Derek Cianfrance. All of these filmmakers, plus loads more, will be among those presenting new feature films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 6th to 16th. Of the 61 films announced this morning, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi actioner Looper will open the fest (a clear upgrade from Score! A Hockey Musical, to be sure), while the others are divvied up between Gala and Special Presentation screenings. Of note: rumors of Terrence Malick’s swift return to the big screen have turned out to be well-founded (barring some last-minute delay); his To the Wonder has been confirmed, along with a raft of well-received Cannes exports like Pablo Lorrain’s No and Mateo Garrone’s Reality. The most insane part of today’s already-stellar announcement is that there’s loads more to come,...

Hollywoodnews.com: Rian Johnson’s time-travel thriller “Looper” will open the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, it was reported on Tuesday in Variety.
Johnson made splashes at Tiff with his previous films – the high-school-set film noir “Brick” and the quirky con caper “The Brothers Bloom.” But “Looper” finds him working with major Hollywood talents Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the story of an assassin (Gordon-Levitt) who eliminates criminals sent back through time to our present day. Troubles arise when Jgl’s next target is himself (Bruce Willis), from a not-so-distant future.
The first wave of Tiff programming reads like a laundry list of can’t-wait-to-see features for the upcoming awards season. Ben Affleck’s back with the political drama “Argo.” We’ll get our first look at “Cloud Atlas,” from Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis. David O. Russell, Derek Cianfrance, Mike Newell, David Ayer,...

The line-up for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival has been officially announced across the Atlantic this morning – local time, and it is simply amazing.

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

If you’ve hunted around for movie bargains, you’ve probably seen some of Mill Creek Entertainment’s 50-Movie Packs on DVD. Apart from other great releases by Mill Creek, these packs are phenomenal boons to cinephiles looking to collect older titles.
There are three new packs available, and I want to not only let you in on a discount code, but I have one of the packs available for you to win.
I know a lot of people may be quick to overlook these packs, and not every movie included stands out as a major value, but there are some great titles in each of them, and fans of the genres will be pleasantly surprised by what they get out of the deal. I have to admit that there is something about seeing a 50-movie pack, especially when it doesn’t cost a couple of hundred dollars, or more,...

Photo: Cannes Film Festival Update: The full line-up is now available right here. We are now less than 24 hours away from the official 2012 Cannes Film Festival line-up announcement and I have to admit, my excitement for what may come is hitting overload. As much as the Toronto Film Festival has come to be the place where several films begin their Oscar run, there simply is nothing better than the international cinematic prestige of attending the Cannes Film Festival each year and this will mark my third year attending. With that in mind, late last night I added an additional nine films to the RopeofSilicon database that have the potential of being named during tomorrow's (April 19) announcement, which should come sometime around 2 or 3 Am Pst. After doing so I felt it wouldn't hurt to take one last look at what films have the strongest chance of showing up at the festival this year.

“She’s so gorgeous!” “She’s too thin!” “I love her hair! “Is she pregnant?” “What was her stylist thinking?” Yes, most of our commentary about Oscar fashion revolves around the women in attendance. The lovely ladies of Hollywood always steal the show on the red carpet, but we want to give the men a chance to shine. While some guys just slap on a penguin suit and call it a day, a few put a little extra thought into their attire, and for that, we applaud them.
Keeping the swag level high, P.Diddy told us he went for a custom-made suit from London. Interior designer/talk-show host Nate Berkus has impeccable taste that clearly translates to his sense of fashion. And Nate was kind enough to let us in on the reasoning behind his fashion splurge: “When you’re 5-8″, you don...

Think of a color. Think of an obscure shade, or even a nondescript one. It was probably represented on the Oscars 2012 red carpet. Paler, more interesting shades like Sarah Hyland‘s rhubarb colored Alberta Feretti dress or Berenice Bejo‘s lovely mint green gown by Elie Saab. There will definitely be some debates about Penelope Cruz’s iceberg custom Giorgio Armani organza gown which in itself was old-school Hollywood glamor, but the color on her wasn’t the best choice.
The ones we’ve really fallen in love with are Viola Davis‘ and Michelle Williams’ emerald Vera Wang and tangerine Louis Vuitton, respectively. Best dressed all the way. Natalie Portman made us sit up and cheer for her red Dior Haute Couture dress from Rare Vintage, which is a 1954 collection. Emma Stone also never disappoints. She wore one of her favorite red carpet designers,...

Tonight, the 2012 Oscars rewarded the talented, entertained the masses and reminded us all about the impeachable hotness of Jennifer Lopez. Seriously. Yikes. They also made us wince with humiliation on more than one occasion. In fact, our top 10 most embarrassing moments were…
10) Bradley Cooper‘s mustache: Bradley was looking a little like a male stripper this evening. Not that that’s the worst way for him to look…
9) Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz’s booty shot: “Just take a chance!” Cammie laughed as she and JLo turned their bums to the audience during their Best Makeup presentation. We get it, ladies. There’s not a chance we weren’t going to love your butts.
8 ) Cirque de Soleil dancer biffs it hard: One unfortunate performer bit it during the troupe’s acrobatic dance performance. Unless his fall was intentional? You can never tell with those French Canadians…
7) Billy Crystal ripping on...

Billy Crystal kicked off the Oscars with one of his signature musical medleys about the nine Best Picture nominees, and we are … on the fence. On one hand, it wouldn’t be a Billy Crystal show without some egregious puns. It just wouldn’t! On the other hand … perhaps Crystal is a little rusty. But maybe we’re being a little harsh on Billy. What did you think of how he kicked off the show? A few things to consider:
1) All the Jonah Hill weight jokes! “Jonah Hill used to have more to his middle”? “They’re serving cupcakes after the show”? Even if Jonah wasn’t looking a little heavier, this would be cringe-worthy. As it is … yikes.
2) Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close jokes! “Tom Hanks is a memory”? We know it’s hard to make a musical joke about a 9/11 drama, so…maybe not make one?
3) The quietness! We...
