Japanese director Kaneto Shindo has died at the age of 100.
Shindo, who was wheelchair-bound and suffered from failing eyesight, passed away at his home in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday. No further details about his death were known as WENN went to press.
Shindo's career spanned nine decades, and his last film Postcard (Ichimai no Hagaki), based partly on the director's own experience in World War II, served as Japan's foreign language Oscar entry this year.
Speaking last year, Shindo's producer son Jiro told The Hollywood Reporter, "The crew had worked with him many times before, so they understood what his vision was. It was very emotional when they finished shooting as he knew it would be the last time they worked together."
A funeral service for Shindo will be held in Tokyo on Sunday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
