The end has come for Freeform series Cruel Summer and Good Trouble. The Disney-owned cable net has canceled Cruel Summer after two seasons and Good Trouble will end with the second half of its upcoming fifth season, Deadline has confirmed.
We hear Good Trouble will be given the opportunity to film some additional scenes for a supersized series finale episode to properly wrap up the series. Season 5B premieres on January 2.
The series were Freeform’s last remaining scripted originals following the November cancellation of animated comedy Praise Petey.
Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the final chapter of Cruel Summer followed the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twisted and turned as it tracked the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed,...

Freeform has cancelled its last two remaining scripted series, Good Trouble and Cruel Summer, TVLine has confirmed.
The Fosters spinoff Good Trouble will conclude with the back half of its fifth season (premiering Tuesday, Jan. 2), while the anthology series Cruel Summer wrapped up its second (and now final) season on July 31. With the axing of the animated comedy Praise Petey in November and grown-ish slated to air its final episodes in 2024, that leaves the future of Freeform’s scripted slate up in the air.

Freeform’s future in scripted original programming is going under the microscope.
The Disney-owned basic-cable network has canceled Cruel Summer after a two-season run and will conclude Good Trouble with the second half of its upcoming fifth season.
Good Trouble, a spinoff of The Fosters, joins Grown-ish in wrapping their runs on the younger-skewing cabler in 2024. Anthology Cruel Summer and Good Trouble were Freeform’s last remaining scripted originals following the November cancellation of animated comedy Praise Petey.
Sources say Freeform executives, led by executive vp programming and content strategy Simran Sethi, wanted to bring back both shows but the ratings for both Good Trouble and Cruel Summer didn’t justify the costs of doing so — especially as Disney looks to cut costs by another $2 billion — and as most viewers watch the network’s programming on Hulu.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

“Praise Petey” has been canceled after just one season at Freeform.
Series creator Anna Drezen shared the news in an Instagram post on Nov. 13. In the post, Drezen wrote, “I cannot believe we got to make this show. Best crew, best cast, top to bottom the dream of my life to make something this funny and unwell that went on actual television. I have heard that making a non-ip show during covid that premieres during a double strike in the dead of summer was not ideal for viewership. It’s still on Hulu as of right now, if you want to watch it you should do it soon. Thanks to everyone who watched and loved these characters as much as I did, and biggest thanks to Alex Jones and Charlie Kirk for bravely yelling about the show when the actors couldn’t. Will never forget you.”

Annie Murphy's career on screen began in the mid-2000s, and since her breakout role in the beloved sitcom "Schitt's Creek," she has had a number of notable roles in film and TV. The actor made her TV debut in the 2007 television film "Lethal Obsession" and went on to have supporting roles in both Canadian and American works, including "Blue Mountain State" and "Rookie Blue."
By the early 2010s, her acting career began to plateau, and Murphy's work was inconsistent. It wasn't until 2013, when she auditioned for the role of Alexis Rose in "Schitt's Creek," that her career really took off. In a 2020 interview on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Murphy explained, "Just before 'Schitt's Creek,' things were quite bleak. My house had just burnt down. I had like $3 in my bank account. I hadn't worked in close to two years. And I had just blown my...

For nearly two decades, The CW wasn’t TV’s most popular network — outside of carefully curated demographics — but it might have been the network most confident in its brand. Shows on The CW looked and felt like they were shows that could exist only on The CW.
Currently, I struggle to find the proper analogy to describe the grab bag of acquisitions that fill The CW’s schedule since the network was acquired by the Nexstar Media Group.
Is the process of surfing through the CW slate, trying to guess a program’s origins, like taking a road trip with the family and playing the license plate game? “There’s New Mexico! There’s British Columbia! How did New Brunswick get all the way over here?”
Or is The CW’s strategy of picking up motley offerings that weren’t on the radar of Netflix or Hulu or Max...

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to proceed with While You Were Breeding, the upcoming Kristin Newman hourlong comedy series based on her memoir, Deadline has learned. Producers of the series, from Freeform Studios, will have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.
The 10-episode series had wrapped production and was headed into post-production when it paused days into the WGA strike. Newman on May 13 wrote an emotional Facebook post explaining her decision to shut down post-production.
As a result, While You Were Breeding, starring Chelsea Frei, missed its August premiere date. After a review of Freeform’s pipeline in the context of Disney’s companywide content spend trim and emphasis on curation, it was determined that the comedy no longer fit the linear network’s programming strategy, sources said.
This is the latest series whose fate has been impacted by the strike. Starz earlier this week made four cancellations, including a...

In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.
Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.
“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.
And while the deal saw a number of other channels were dropped in the deal, the dropping of Freeform suggests that,...

In Freeform’s adult animated comedy Praise Petey, New York “It” girl Petey St. Barts (Annie Murphy) becomes a southern cult leader after a father she never knew dies and leaves her his rather complicated legacy.
That includes an entire working town, a throng of comet-obsessed cult members and one hot (and morally superior) redneck named Bandit (John Cho). In desperate need of food and direction until an alien race comes to collect them, Petey’s prophesized arrival seemingly guarantees for the citizens of New Utopia that they will once again have a sense of purpose.
But the former New Yorker with mommy issues and (failed) magazine dreams understandably finds all the human sacrifice and human Shih Tzus (Alfred Molina) a little too much. So instead of merely taking the reins from her father, Petey — alongside Bandit, best friend Eliza (Kiersey Clemons), right-hand Mae Mae (Amy Hill) and old recordings...

John Cho is a man of many talents, a star in any and every genre he explores. He’s built to be a leading man, even making our list of actors who need to star in a romantic comedy. Yet, in examining Cho’s impressive acting resume, his three most recent TV roles all tap into one archetype— that of the cowboy. From playing an intergalactic bounty hunter in Cowboy Bebop, to a tortured traveler in The Afterparty, or even a hunky farmer in Praise Petey, Cho is proving himself to be the modern Western hero.

Few TV shows that premiered this summer have absurdist verve of “Praise Petey.” The new animated series on Freeform follows Petra “Petey” St. Barts, a wealthy NYC socialite who inherits a small town called New Utopia from her recently deceased father, realizes her Dad was a cult leader, and discovers all of New Utopia’s residents are brainwashed to follow her. What’s a girl to do? Figure out some way for New Utopia to return to normalcy, like making sure its citizens no longer participate in human sacrifices.

Few revivals are necessary. “Justified: City Primeval,” the new eight-episode limited series that welcomes back U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Best Drama Actor nominee Timothy Olyphant), is probably not one of them. After all, original recipe “Justified” ended on the highest of high notes. In fact, one might even dare to say it featured one of the best series finales of all time. And yet, there is no denying how great Olyphant is in the role or how much we’ve missed TV’s coolest lawman. So why bother?

Freeform’s Praise Petey sounds mildly deranged on paper — which, to be clear, I mean as a good thing. The half-hour animated comedy centers on a New York fashionista (Annie Murphy), who’s surprised to discover in the premiere that she’s inherited a backwoods cult from the late father (Stephen Root) she barely knew. If nothing else, it’s a premise I don’t think I’ve ever heard before; it’s so specific and so bizarre that I have to presume someone was really excited about it at some point.
Alas, despite a top-shelf voice cast and a smattering of jokes targeted squarely at my own Millennial-women-in-media demographic (if you get the reference to that 2011 Chris Evans GQ profile, it might be aiming at you too), the overall impression left by Praise Petey is of no impression at all. Neither offensive enough to loathe nor impressive enough to love,...

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] If they’re lucky enough, some folks will go on to inherit a house, or even just a nice sum of money. But in Freeform‘s first-ever animated series Praise Petey, New Yorker Petra, a.k.a. Petey (voiced by Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy), inherits a cult. In the comedy series’ opener, Petey learns of her absentee father (Barry‘s Stephen Root) and then learns that he has died and left behind New Utopia, a cult outside of the tri-state area the size of a small town. And while everyone in New Utopia is anxiously awaiting Petey’s arrival so they can have someone new to worship, Petey decides she doesn’t want to run New Utopia the way he did. Learning how to lead the followers will be a struggle for Petey. She isn’t even comfortable contributing ideas at the fashion magazine she...

When Freeform's new animated series Praise Petey premieres this Friday, you won't recognize any of the faces, but you'll certainly recognize the supersized talent behind them.
Prolific actor Stephen Root is among the actors who will use their voices to bring a wide array of characters to life in the new series by creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Drezen, a former head writer on Saturday Night Live.
We had the chance to chat with Root during a recent press day, and the pleasure was all ours. The interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
There's no doubt that you are familiar with many of Root's roles over the years.
He's incredibly talented, and his acting chops tear apart roles in both comedies and dramas, but he leans heavily into the former, even when taking a dramatic turn.

Freeform has released the first trailer for its new adult animated comedy Praise Petey, which follows how one modern woman will manage her deceased father’s cult.
The two-minute first look teases New Yorker and “It Girl” Petra aka “Petey” grappling with her life turning upside down when she must move from her big-city life to a place called New Utopia. It’s a community her father founded, only it’s not like most. Here, everyone’s part of a cult. Even worse? They believe Petey’s their prophesized savior.
“You being here means the prophecy of the great daughter’s return is fulfilled,” John Cho’s character says in a southern twang.
“Is this town doing Ok?” Petey asks, before Kiersey Clemons’ character responds, “Nah, we’re starving.”
But Petey doesn’t want to fulfill the prophecy of the daughter returned. Instead, she wants to “girlboss” her way out...

Freeform is tapping into a genre that hasn't aired on the network yet with Praise Petey.
The cabler went public with the trailer for its star-studded new series on Thursday, and it's poised to be a big hit.
"Petey aka Petra begins the series as an NYC' It Girl' with everything figured out, until her well-curated life comes crashing down," the official description reads.
"As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her deceased father gives her a new lease on life – taking over as leader of his small-town cult New Utopia."
"As Petey leans into her new role as a 'girl boss,' she discovers what it means to be a leader and how to find her voice as she tries to modernize her late father's small-town cult."
It's a compelling hook for a series, but we're sure the biggest hook here will be the cast.

Freeform is shedding a pair of scripted originals.
The Disney-owned cable network has canceled sophomore comedy Single Drunk Female and rookie drama The Watchful Eye.
The news comes four months after Disney’s Dana Walden shuffled her executive ranks and gave oversight of Freeform to Simran Sethi, the ABC development executive who previously headed up originals for the younger-skewing broadcast network with former Freeform president Tara Duncan now exclusively focused on the Onyx Collective studio.
Single Drunk Female starredSofia Black-d’Elia, Ally Sheedy, Rebecca Henderson, Sasha Compere, Lily Mae Harrington and Garrick Bernard and hailed from creator Simone Finch (The Connors) and exec producer Jenni Konner (Girls). The show was produced in-house by Disney’s 20th Television, where Konner is based with an overall deal.

Saturday Night Live is ringing in the new year with a freshman pair.
The NBC late-night comedy variety show returns on January 15 with West Side Story star Ariana DeBose making her SNL debut as host with Live Life Fast pop star Roddy Ricch set as musical guest.
DeBose will be well known to creator Lorne Michaels as she plays Emma in Apple’s Michaels-exec produced comedy series Schmigadoon!
It will be the first show of 2022 for SNL and comes after the show rallied impressively for its Covid-hit final episode of 2021, a show that featured only Kenan Thompson and Michael Che from its regular cast as well as special guests Tina Fey and Tom Hanks.
Deadline understands that the plan for the January 15 show is to be back with a full cast and crew as well as studio audience, but obviously given the spread of the Omicron Covid variant, a decision...
