[last lines]
Jessica Cohen: [stopped car to investigate figure lying in the road] Sir, are you okay?
[Damon grunts]
Jessica Cohen: What happened?
Damon Salvatore: I'm... lost.
Jessica Cohen: And you're lying in the middle of the road?
Damon Salvatore: Not that kind of lost.
[groaning, sits up]
Damon Salvatore: Metaphorically. Existentially.
Jessica Cohen: Do you need help?
Damon Salvatore: Well...
[pocket flask clanks]
Damon Salvatore: yes, I do. Can you help me?
[drinks from flask]
Jessica Cohen: You're drunk.
Damon Salvatore: No. Uh, well, yes, a little. Maybe.
[annoyed, she heads back to car]
Damon Salvatore: No, please don't leave. I really do need help.
[jumps up, blocks her way]
Damon Salvatore: Don't move.
[compelling gaze]
Jessica Cohen: I don't want any trouble.
Damon Salvatore: Neither do I. But that's all I got is trouble.
Jessica Cohen: Why can't I move?
Damon Salvatore: What's your name?
Jessica Cohen: [sobbing] Jessica.
Damon Salvatore: Jessica... I have a secret. I have a big one, but I've never said it out loud. I mean... what's the point? It's not gonna change anything. It's not gonna make me good. Make me adopt a puppy. I can't be what other people want me to be. What she wants me to be. This is who I am, Jessica.
Jessica Cohen: Are you gonna hurt me?
Damon Salvatore: I'm not sure. Because you... are my existential crisis. Do I kill you... or do I not kill you?
Jessica Cohen: [sobbing] Please, don't...
Damon Salvatore: But I have to, Jessica... because I'm not human. And I miss it. I miss it more than anything in the world. That is my secret. But there's only so much hurt a man can take.
Jessica Cohen: Please, don't...
Damon Salvatore: Okay.
[frees her from his hypnotic gaze]
Damon Salvatore: You're free to leave.
[she runs for the car, opens the door, and then he sinks his fangs into her throat]

"The Descent" is THE episode of Damon, who gives peace to Rose and suffers for her in a magnificent performance of Ian Somerhalder. The sequence of Rose's dream is beautiful and heartbreaking. Instead of killing Jessica, the conclusion would have been excellent if he killed Jules instead. I am going to miss the charismatic Rose and it is terrible to see the unpleasant Uncle John back to the show. My vote is eight.
