When Kenneth brings Liz the message from her airline pilot boyfriend, Carol (Matt Damon), he tells her it is a message from "Captain Burnett," revealing his full name is "Carol Burnett."
In this episode Liz and Kenneth begin a couple of pseudo-psychotherapy sessions. In the first one Liz talks about her issues with men and trust, saying: "For starters, everyone I ever dated in high school turned out to be either gay or a girl dressed as a guy to get a journalism scholarship." This is an allusion to the 80s cult classic "Just One of the Guys" (1985), starring Joyce Hyser, in which her character "Terry Griffith" gets passed up as a contender for a journalism internship, in favor of boys, convincing her it's due to sexism. Therefore, determined to win the internship at any cost, and to prove a point, she dresses up as a guy, and humorous and screwball situations ensue.
