Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

If you weren’t already sweating following the spicy Season 2 finale of Single’s Inferno, start fanning yourself now: Season 3 is here.
In the Korean dating reality show, singles must couple up in order to ditch their home base of Inferno for the more idyllic Paradise, a luxury hotel that lucky pairs take a chopper to for an overnight date. No matter where you end up, relationships bloom under unlikely circumstances, typically built on honest conversation and raw emotion that can often be a challenge for solid 10s who are used to being pursued. But the next chapter promised even more heat, as the rules and the hellish island itself got a makeover. “What used to be ‘Paradise’ and ‘Inferno’ will change completely,” Yoo Ki Hwan, Netflix’s unscripted lead for Korea, told Tudum last year. “Especially when it comes to ‘Paradise’ — it won’t just be a luxurious resort, but...

Is the best part about watching reality TV the derailment of somebody’s character because they weren’t actually the G.O.A.T they assumed they were? Maybe. It is quite unfortunate that one of the most entertaining members of the cast got left behind in season 3 of Single’s Inferno, but at least we know she had fun! For the rest, though, we saw it coming for sure. Although I will admit, it would’ve been nice to see Gwan-Hee stay back in the fiery pit, but alas, this is a show for the masses, and I may not be a parttaker. Single’s Inferno season 3 had four successful couples, which left four singles behind in the Inferno. The couples were mostly anticipated by viewers, except when it came to Gwan-Hee, where there was a little bit of confusion. As someone who is watching this show for the first time,...

I may be the only person who watched all of Single’s Inferno season 3 to be rejoicing that it’s finally ended. For those who love their reality shows, I have so much respect for you. I suppose I understand why it could be an escape, spending those two hours every week with no other thought in mind, just the excitement of who your favorite contestant will choose, or which couple will emerge out of this messy situation, or just a gnarly old fight to lift up your mood. I get it! But it’s just not for me. Or maybe people like Gwan-Hee really put me off of these shows completely. You see, it’s exactly this kind of person that makes a show like Single’s Inferno thrive; however, it leaves me with a sour ick towards the genre altogether. I suppose it’s the aspiration of it all—to look a certain way,...

Single’s Inferno Season 3 has come to a roaring end thanks to one man and one man alone. Hunk and basketball player Lee Gwan-Hee stole many hearts on the show and kept everyone on their tippy-toes in anticipation of who his final choice would be. I suppose it’s people like him that keep viewers intrigued; however, it completely ruined my mood. Why are the judges so supportive of his choices? Why do they like him so much? Dex even goes as far as to call him “Hyung-nim” (the term for older brother) endearingly (ew). There are times when Lee Da-Hee showed some distaste towards him, but somehow all his questionable behavior was forgotten by the end of the show. Am I the problem? Maybe it’s not that serious. On the other hand, I especially had trouble fathoming the terrible reaction the judges had towards Min-Young, who was just trying...

Despite being a self-acclaimed reality TV hater, I have come to realize that I go through a rollercoaster of emotions while watching Single’s Inferno, mostly ending on a frustrating note, but does this make it enjoyable? I couldn’t say so, yet I have found myself occasionally smiling at some of the small gestures made by the girls and some banter on the show that’s tolerable. It’s rather obvious that despite the men all being older, except Min-Woo, it’s the women who are the mature lot on the show, which is the reason I’m so frustrated. Not to mention, the judges are seriously old-school and are very obviously partial towards certain contestants, which makes it feel like the whole show is rigged. Additionally, their instigating innocent viewers against cast members is how people get cancelled on the internet. Okay, I’m getting a little bit dramatic here,...

There was no shortage of quality Korean shows to watch this year. From mystery thrillers and classic dramas to riveting reality series and heart-fluttering romances, 2023 was truly the year K-content ruled the roost. More recent releases like 1940s historical thriller, Gyeonseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon (The Marvels) and Han Soo-hee (My Name), and the latest season of horror drama favorite, Sweet Home, prove the momentum isn’t dying down anytime soon as we head into 2024.

When Viviz said they were “love phobic” in their song Maniac, I was a bit confused, until I watched Single’s Inferno. With the passing of every episode, I find myself more frustrated. Not only am I not really interested in knowing anything about the contestants, but the judges and I are just not on the same page. Specifically, when it comes to Min-Young, who they seem to really hate. Additionally, I find it rather strange that they simply sit and comment on these people who are talking about their feelings and then judge them even though it’s technically a contest and they’re here to beat each other out. I suppose I’m the daft one with no experience. I will admit, watching the contestants compete in physical activities is actually quite entertaining minus the dramatic angles and the animated reactions of the panel.

It’s almost the end of the year, and Netflix doesn’t seem to be done with serving Korean content just yet. The Korean entertainment industry is all in this time of the year, and we’re getting a taste of everything they have to offer! From the reality dating show Single’s Inferno to the highly anticipated Gyeongseong Creature and Death Game, the holidays seem to be covered for us, but Like Flowers in Sand may turn out to be the underdog that takes us by surprise, just like its protagonist. Like Flowers in Sand stars Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Joo-Myoung in leading roles and follows the story of a “Ssireum” athlete (a traditional wrestling sport) who gives up after losing too many championships. When his childhood friend returns, she reignites the sporty spark in him.

Watching Single’s Inferno makes me feel as if I’ve stumbled into an illegal circus. To me, it almost comes across as demeaning when the panel discusses what’s happening within the show. Obviously, since the show is such a super hit, I’m the problem here, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around the idea at all. Especially now that the drama has begun, I’m just so frustrated by the reactions from the panel. I guess that’s what’s meant to make things fun, considering I wouldn’t be reacting at all if it weren’t for these 5 people largely reacting to ordinary things. Maybe it’s also how forgiving they are to men in comparison to the women? Specifically, with the whole thing happening with Min-Young and Jin-Seok this week, I’m quite disappointed with their reactions. A lot takes place in the two almost 90-minute episodes,...

I suppose Love Like A K-Drama is a direct result of the monstrous global success of Netflix’s Korean dating show “Single’s Inferno.” As your resident skeptic, I will admit that I do feel quite invested in this show; call it collateral damage if you will, and there’s quite the drama to go over in the second set of episodes that just dropped. The premise alone had me confused for the first four episodes until I started to understand what was really happening. Dating show-newbie problems, maybe. I’ve started to understand why people get so absorbed in these things because, you know, I’ve been rooting for a pair, and now they’ve suddenly drifted apart, and I’m here hating on the guy and hurting for the girl. Quite a disappointing turn of events really.

Is it time for South Korea’s TV drama series to move over and make way for Korean unscripted entertainment — namely game shows and reality shows?
While 2003 drama series “Jewel in the Palace,” or the more recent “Crash Landing on You,” “Memories of the Alhambra,” “Mr. Queen,” “Love (ft. Korean variety shows have been a catch-all with multi-generational appeal. Talent contests have worked well in the home market, but often were too quirky — too much dialogue, or distracting titles flashing across the screen — which meant that they were best exported as formats rather than finished shows.
Examples of those include Mbc’s 2015 hit “King of Mask Singer,” which became “The Masked Singer” for Fox in the U.S. (and...

Netflix is to double its output of unscripted Korean TV shows this year, in response to growing international success. An eight-title 2023 slate includes a third season for hit dating show “Singles Inferno” and the late-January released “Physical 100.”
“When we received the proposal for ‘Single’s Inferno’ at the end of 2020, there weren’t many dating programs in Korea. We set out to close the gap locally and ended up winning fans globally. The first season became the first Korean unscripted show to debut on the global top 10 non-English TV list. Season 2 featured in the global top 10 for four weeks, and pulled in even higher viewing hours,” said Yoo Ki Hwan, Netflix manager for unscripted content in Korea.
