- Three kingdoms are threatened by a powerful enemy. A chief enters into a surprising alliance with a shield maiden and a swordmaker. Together they take up the fight against the amorous king who will rule over everything and everyone.
- Bjørn from Hordaland engraves sacred runes in the blade of a freshly forged sword. He asks the All-Father, Odin, the One-Eyed, to give the weapon divine strength because there are rumors of a coming great war. While Bjørn is forging, Åsa is hunting wild boar in the forests in Rogaland. As the well-trained shield maiden spans the bow and gets a full hit, a Viking raft passes right by. The men on board are armed to the teeth. At the same time, it is market day at Torstein Egdejarl's large farm in Agder. Loud sellers falsify goods for responsive and laughable customers. Suddenly it becomes quiet. An entourage of bloody warriors enters the market on horseback. One of the horses carries a corpse. Torstein, Åsa and Bjørn must realize that the incredible rumors are true. A merciless army is on its way to them, led by an amorous king. To get the woman he wants, he must unite Norway into one kingdom.
King Harald ravages Norway to gather all the chiefdom's under his kingdom. He fights hard, because Harald knows that it is only if he succeeds that he gets the woman he has put his love on. Gyda, King Erik's beautiful daughter. Apparently all the little kings, earls and great peasants kneel before the king's mighty army. But the kings of Agder, Rogaland and Hordaland refuse to submit. We follow the blacksmith Bjørn Vikarfroste (Espen Hatleskog) from Hordaland, shield maid Åsa Halvgrimsdotter (Karianne Bentzen) from Rogaland and Torstein Egdejarl (Erik Madsen) from Agder, into the fateful year 872. A year that ends with the three accompanying their kings on board the longships - with course towards Harald's army in Hafrsfjord. Accompanying the load is the treacherous Tjodolf Skald (Fredrik Tønder Tørmoen). According to him, King Kjøtve of Agder has given him orders to make the saga of their victory.
