- While the guys argue that men are loyal friends and women will abandon their pals at the drop of a hat, one thing is certain -- everyone has each other's backs in the cul-de-sac crew. Although Laurie may be the worst houseguest ever, Jules is there for her when she needs a place to stay; Laurie helps Jules to realize she doesn't need to change for others; and when Bobby is jealous that Travis has gone to Grayson for advice, Grayson comes through for his buddy.—ABC Publicity
- STARTING TO OWN IT COUGAR TOWN
One of the great eternal debates between men and women: who is more loyal to their friends? Grayson (Josh Hopkins) and Andy (Ian Gomez) think it's no contest: men are. Jules (Courteney Cox) argues they only have beer, pizza, and sports to hold them together. ("Hey, let's pee on this thing and then wrestle!") But Andy proves it by whipping out the picture of Ellie (Christa Miller) and her large bridal party, Jules being the only one Ellie still talks to...including Andy's sister. Jules, however, is convinced there is nothing she wouldn't do for Ellie and Laurie (Busy Philipps). And Laurie picks the perfect opportunity to ask Jules if she can crash at her place this weekend while her place is being painted. (well played) Which is less creepy than the last date Travis (Dan Byrd) had with Kirsten (), which included watching the entire first season of and watch eight consecutive films (and call it an Estevez Festivez to boot). Kirsten assures Travis she's still crazy about him, in spite of her previous boyfriend's idea of romance being trips to Paris. Travis consults Grayson (not Bobby) on this, which gives the girls the chance to check out the new wine bar in the area behind Grayson's back. And Bobby (Brian Van Holt) is upset, as is Andy for some reason. ("What if you only had one night with Kirsten before she exploded?") Planning time includes two flutes of champagne and a diamond necklace from Andy, a trip to Paris from Grayson, and titles for love songs from Bobby, such as Hotel Kirsten, Stairway to Kirsten, but not Kirsten and Julio Down By The Schoolyard...because that's weird. Until Grayson topped it with My Kirstona.
Turns out Laurie packs light as a houseguest. Mainly because she intended to borrow Jules' stuff, like a toothbrush, toothpaste, a dress, a thong (that was with Ellie's permission), and she's already rummaging through Jules' closets like a raccoon. And she was already two pots of coffee ahead of Jules and Grayson in the morning. And then there's looking through her phone...
LAURIE: 'Dear Jules, you are awesome. Love, Jules.' Seriously?
JULES: Sometimes I text myself a little pick-me-up.
LAURIE: 'Dear Jules, you're not so special.'
JULES: Sometimes I go the other way.
Jules talks to Grayson about it, who offers to let her crash at his place, although he'd rather talk about moving to Paris with her. But since Grayson convinced Jules to change from "future gal" to "now gal," she decided she had to confront Laurie about it, something women do and men don't. And there's no backstabbing involved, unless you're Ellie and are hanging out in the wine bar because you're as snooty as the owner. After surviving a Barb attack (Barb can't wear corduroy...and you're on your own to figure out why), Laurie shows up at work to Jules' surprise. And the surprise being Laurie lied about having her apartment painted: she just wanted to crash with Jules. And Jules loses it.
JULES: Laurie, I'm at the point where the sound of your voice is more upsetting to me than those Internet videos of foreign babies smoking. I have never spent an evening with such an annoying person! Why would you do that to me?
LAURIE: Because I missed you. I know you're in love with Grayson and that's cool. But I feel I've been feeling boxed out, and so I made up a reason for us to spend time together. I'm sorry that it sucked for you.
And now Jules feels awful. But Laurie left as if Jules didn't say anything bad. And Jules complains to Grayson about it.
JULES: So you're saying you're mad at her for not being mad at you?
Bobby finally confronts Travis about going to Grayson for advice. Bobby asks him to come to him for advice, and he'd find help if he didn't know the answer. But in the case of romance, Bobby says it's all about creating a 'moment'. And if Travis gives him twenty more minutes, he'll come up with something. What he came up with is nightfall over the ocean with a full moon and beautiful lights strewn around it. It was Grayson's idea, but Bobby thanked him for letting him take the credit.
Ellie finally gets over being at the wine bar, as the Wayne, the owner said nasty things about Jules. Ellie confronts him on it, and he refuses to back down. And just like Laurie told Jules (while she was naked, and with her back to the camera, dammit) that friends always have each other's backs, Ellie goes back to Wayne and gives him both barrels. Laurie apologizes for not dialing back when she knows she needs to with Jules because she was so psyched for spending the weekend with Jules. And Ellie brings Jules and Big Carl back to the wine bar to fill him up.
