Welcome to The B-Side from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Happy Halloween! This year we discuss a legend: Roger Corman! As is tradition, our dear friend Gavin Mevius, talented editor and co-host of the incredible The Mixed Reviews Podcast. Be sure to listen to their podcast and support them on Patreon if you see fit!
Today we tackle three B-Sides: Not of This Earth, The Intruder, and Frankenstein Unbound.
We discuss Corman’s influence on New Hollywood and his enduring influence to this day, his indelible eye for talent both in front of (actors like Nicholson and De Niro got their starts in Corman films) and behind, and the directing career that could’ve been had The Intruder been a hit.
There’s talk of the other...

When you walk into a film titled Big Ass Spider, you should simultaneously know what to expect – yet have no idea what kind of insanity awaits. B-Movies are often hit and miss because replicating unintentional comedy proves to be a frequently underestimated task, and we’ve already seen channels like SyFy over-bloat and genetically alter every animal in the book to create killer Saturday night features. There’s been Ice Spiders, Camel Spiders, Spiders 3D, Jungle Spiders – but has there ever been a Big Ass Spider?! I mean, yeah, we’ve seen “big ass” spiders, but have you seen The Big Ass Spider?! To say you get what you pay for is an understatement with Mike Mendez’s Big Ass Spider, but to write it off as yet another low-budget schlock-fest would also be a disservice – unless a gigantic CGI spider skewering park-goers like human shish kabobs doesn’t sound all that appealing to you.

It's the oldest story in the book: a group of friends get in trouble with the internet. In this case, it is six friends, and they make viral "Truth or Dare" videos - until their "number one fan" decides he wants to play and the bodies start piling up. This is the story behind Truth or Dare, the directorial debut from actress Jessica Cameron (Silent Night, Hell-o-Ween, Camel Spiders). The film will get its world premiere at the Arizona Underground Film Festival this Friday the 13th.
In this exclusive still from the set, Jessica is working with one of her actors, Ryan Kiser, on a "particularly intense scene."

Zombies, vampires and werewolves, oh my! Classic monsters are always a good way for horror filmmakers to go, but sometimes we see more... unique... beasties on the screen. And when they go well (and even when they don't), they're some of the most memorable characters in the genre.
In celebration of the Irish sci-fi comedy film Grabbers, which hit VOD and other digital outlets on July 19 and contains some pretty wild monsters of its own, we've compiled a list of Horror's Top 13 Craziest Monsters!
As always, we'd like to start out with some honorable mentions. Slither and its old school relative Night of the Creeps both gave us a swarm of memorable leech-like monsters. The Host dropped us into an unexpected nightmare on a typical South Korean afternoon with a very unique movie monster. Piranha not got enough twists and turns for you? Anaconda lacking the requisite bite? Well, why not have the best of both worlds? From Mike MacLean, the writer of Sharktopus (Jaws not tentacley enough... etc.), and with Hollywood exploitation legend Roger Corman behind it, comes Piranhaconda. Somehow the movie passed us by when it aired on Syfy in June, but all 82 glorious minutes are coming to DVD on January 7, 2013. The film is directed by Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall, Camel Spiders) and stars Quentin Tarantino's Mr Blonde, Michael Madsen, fresh from Celebrity Big Brother. Joining Madsen is Rachel Hunter (The Benchwarmers) and MacLean's Sharktopus veteran Shandi Finnessey. Rounding out the cast is Rib Hillis, who you might have seen on Two and a Half Men and CSI Miami. The plot (more)...

Alright guys, I’ll level with you – I hate spiders. Everyone has that one creepy, crawly thing that grosses them out to no end, and the thought of a little fat fuzzy black arachnid scurrying by my toes gives me instantaneous chills. Just one of those things that isn’t for me, yeah? But don’t think I hide my eyes when they’re around or anything, as I love catching Eight Legged Freaks whenever it’s running on syndication, so I took Tibor Takács’ Spiders 3D as a welcome festival opener.
A throwback to the B-Movie creature features of old, undoubtably having scientists meddle with something small, growing it to gargantuan sizes only to cause destruction? Sounds like a good time to me, especially since Tibor is a veteren of these types of flicks, such as Ice Spiders, Mega Snake, Kraken: Tentacles Of The Deep, Sabrina The Teenage Witch…...

Ready to take a break from all the E3 news that's been filling up our pages and relax with some new music? Then check out this post-apocalyptic music video for "Shadow," a song off Bleeding Edge, the sophomore album from horror actress Jon Mack's prog rock band Auradrone.
Mack (Mandrake, Saw VI, Spiders 3D) has teamed up with Robert Lasardo (The Professional, "Nip/Tuck") and Brian Krause (Camel Spiders, Tbk: The Toolbox Murders 2, "Charmed") for this dystopian video about a struggle between alien hybrids and humans. It was written and directed by Dan Zacharias and produced by Zacharias and Mack.
A collective music and multi-media project led by Los Angeles artist Mack, Auradrone combines electronic sounds with live instrumentation, resulting in ultramodern post-rock dance music that is gritty, sensuous, and sophisticated. Bleeding Edge features the collaboration of Mack (vox, electronics, guitar), Strasbourg France’s Fred Traverso (electronics), and Christopher Fudurich (electronics,...

Some horror films have a comedic sensibility written into them, and increasingly it comes bundled with a low budget; it’s as if filmmakers decide that if they can’t elicit genuine or even cheap scares, they abandon that goal and go for laughs as a consolation prize. Like with any style of film, there are those who pull this off with ease, while others fail miserably—which is even worse in this case, because it means they’re failing at failing. Aspiring horror filmmakers take note: disasters like Camel Spiders can and should be avoided at all costs. The special effects are horrible, the acting will make you cringe, and at times it seems like no thought went into the process whatsoever. Camel Spiders is a bad film, but not in the fun way.

B-movie mastermind Jim Wynorski’s 2012 creature feature “Camel Spiders” doesn’t waste any time getting to the good stuff. After an extremely quick credit sequence, the film is underway, opening with a wonky shoot-out in Iraq (yeah, right) that immediately introduces the titular beasties to the audience. This unholy legion of spiders ultimately helps our heroes defeat the enemy, though the American forces don’t escape unharmed. Not only do a few soldiers lose their lives in the bullet-riddled fray, their corpses serve as a way for the blood-thirsty arachnids to take an unscheduled holiday to the United States. All sorts of hell soon breaks loose. If you’ve seen any of Wynorski’s movies, you should know exactly what you’re in for. The spiders soon find their way into a small town in the middle of nowhere, a fine location for all sorts of monster-related mayhem. Fortunately for the well-armed townsfolk,...

This week the latest creature feature out of the House of Roger Corman, Camel Spiders, directed by Jim Wynorski and starring Brian Krause and C.Thomas Howell, has been unleashed onto DVD and Blu-ray shelves everywhere.
The film pits a group of stranded travelers against a horde of deadly and oversized camel spiders who wreak havoc after they overrun a small, unsuspecting rural mountain town.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat briefly with Krause about his experiences working on the monster movie as well as the fun of playing "make-believe" with CG spiders and what's coming up next for him.
Read on for the highlights from our interview with Krause for Camel Spiders below, and make sure to check out the flick for yourself now that it has arrived on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Camel Spiders was just released on Blu-ray/DVD and I was offered the opportunity to interview star Brian Krause (Sleepwalkers, Charmed) about his experience filming the movie. While we only had a brief chat time, I learned about his hate of spiders, working under director Jim Wynorski, and acting with CGI camel spiders.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. Camel Spiders is one of those movies that I’ve seen a lot of reader feedback on. Some are disgusted by it, some are excited, and others just don’t enjoy B-movies like this. Camel Spiders is out on Blu-ray/DVD this week and I wanted to find out more about your experience making this film. Can you tell me how you got involved with this movie?

We’ve all been told not to judge something by it’s cover. However, when you see a title like Metal Shifters, Camel Spiders, or Ice Quake, you should probably have an inkling that you’re about to watch a B movie. For the B-lovers out there, these three titles pack some ridiculous moments that are sure to entertain.
Metal Shifters:
Just when you thought there weren’t enough movies about Idaho, Paul Ziller brings B-movie lovers a little gem called Metal Shifters. Having enjoyed an array of farfetched Syfy movies, I can usually take any plot line with a grain of salt. However, with this film, I found myself pondering some simple, moral questions. My biggest quandary stems from the premise of the movie: if a strange, metal object plummeted from the sky, would your first thought be “I wonder how much I could sell that for?” Probably not.

Director: Jim Wynorski.
Writers: Jim Wynorski and J. Brad Wilke.
Cast: Brian Krause, C. Thomas Howell and Melissa Brasselle.
Better than watching Gremlins 2 and Tremors combined, Camel Spiders has a fairly mixed up tale about mutant arachnoids taking over a dusty town. Although these monstrous beasts are computer-generated, that does not distract from the fun this movie tries to make. To see victims ensnared in spider webs is morbidly and potentially horrific. Mummified carcasses makes for some easy creep out sessions.
But to see how this tale of survival horror will pan out will depend on only one thing: just how adept are the military in cleaning up the mess they caused? Apparently dick all. After an engagement with enemy forces in Afghanistan, a swarm of camel spiders comes out of nowhere to join in the chaos and suddenly, there is a man down.
The bug crawls inside the soldier,...

Camel Spiders 85 Minutes Directed by Jim Wynorski Review by Brandon Moore
In an age of instant digital video gratification, there is still a place for B movies—the partnership between Asylum and Syfy Channel with such films as Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus and Zombie Apocalpyse have shown this much. Roger Corman, who built his career on a reputation of getting the most bang (and boobs) for your buck with a repertoire that includes the original Piranha and Death Race 2000, most recently lends his name to Camel Spiders, a “film” (and I do use the term loosely) that is so achingly terrible, that even King of the B Movies Corman himself should have thought twice before slapping his name on this and allowing it to see the light of day.
The film traces the path of the titular camel spiders from the deserts of Afghanistan to the similarly/identically dressed deserts of Arizona,...

When you hear that a movie called Camel Spiders is coming out, you can’t help but think “Wait that doesn’t already exist?” Camel Spiders, aka wind scorpions, aka solifuges, made the front page of your nightmares during the Iraq war when images of these seemingly gigantic monstrosities were e-mailed around the world. The arachnids, which are not actually spiders, were rumored to run at speeds surpassing 30 miles per hour, regularly chasing down military Humvees, and said to be capable of leaping great distances, say, from the ground to your face. Their bite was rumored to be fatal and their size seemingly ranged up to two feet. Much of this is wildly inaccurate and stems from a photograph of two solifuges which were stuck to each other and held in the foreground of the photo, making them appear huge. In actuality, this nightmare fuel only measures six inches for the head and body sections, which...

Good luck reviewing a movie called Camel Spiders. If you knock it you're an idiot, because, let's be fair, it's called "Camel freaking Spiders." If you love it you're also an idiot, because what self-respecting film critic could ever say they had a good time watching, you guessed it, Camel Spiders? Fortunately I'm split right down the middle on the adorably stupid and unsurprisingly Corman-produced creature feature called Camel Spiders. On one hand it has all the goofy dialogue and airy dry spells you'd expect from a low-budget horror flick about Giant Spiders that attack a small town, and on the other: Camel Spiders does follow a simplistically enjoyable formula ... hell, it actually combines a...
