The Taste of Things, a foodie period romance from French-Vietnamese filmmaker Tran Anh Hùng will be France’s official contender for the 2024 Oscars in the best international feature category. The film, starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel, premiered in Cannes under the title The Pot-au-Feu, where it won the best director prize. IFC Films and Sapan Studios have U.S. rights and will release the film stateside.
Set in 1885, the film follows the in-the-kitchen and in-the-bedroom romance between top chef Dodin Bouffant (Magimel) and his personal cook and lover, Eugénie (Binoche). They have been together for decades and he is desperate to marry her but she has steadfastly refused, afraid doing so will mean losing her independence. The Taste of Things was a critical and audience favorite in Cannes, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it one of “the most appetizing, art house food porn flicks to come along in a while.

Italy has picked Matteo Garrone’s moving migration drama Io Capitano to represent the country in the 2024 Oscars in the best international film category.
The feature, which follows the trials of two Senegalese teenagers trying to make it from Dakar to Italy — across the Sahara desert and over the Mediterranean Sea — premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it won the best director Silver Lion for Garrone and the best new actor prize for lead Seydou Sarr. The Hollywood Reporter picked the film as one of the 15 best movies of this year’s fall festivals.
Io Capitano is especially timely given the new hard line towards immigration taken by Italy’s far-right government under Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Speaking at the U.N. this week, Meloni called for tighter controls on migration, saying she would not allow Italy to become “Europe’s refugee camp.”

Morocco has picked Asmae El Moudir’s The Mother Of All Lies as its submission for the best international feature category at the 2024 Oscars.
The hybrid documentary, a re-creation of the events surrounding the bread riots in Casablanca in 1981, the Moroccan government’s brutal crackdown and the impact of both on El Moudir’s family, premiered in Cannes this year. It took the L’Oeil d’or (Golden Eye) for best documentary, sharing the prize with Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters, Tunisia’s 2024 Oscar contender.
Morocco has never been nominated for the Oscars in the best international feature category, but El Moudir’s film comes with major critical plaudits. The Hollywood Reporter gave the movie a rave review, calling it “inspired, innovative and moving.”
Lacking any documentary footage of the riots, El Moudir recreates her family’s Casablanca apartment and the neighborhood where she grew up with handcrafted dolls and replica buildings.
