“I felt ‘The Shape of Water’ needed a good six months of undivided attention, to find an audience and to enjoy it, as a human being that made something I’m proud of and happy with,” del Toro explained.

There's no denying Kate Hudson's special bond with her mom Goldie Hawn's longtime partner, Kurt Russell. The actor, whom she affectionately calls "Pa," has been her main father figure for most of her life, and that includes dishing out fatherly advice when she needs it most. During a recent interview on ABC Radio's No Limits With Rebecca Jarvis podcast, the actress revealed the encouraging words Kurt gave her after she lost the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in Almost Famous in 2001. "Something Kurt said to me at the Oscars after I lost [was], 'Congratulations. You can now go have your career,'" she said. "[That] was, like, such a great thing to say, because it's just starting, I was 21, so it was kind of amazing to have that so young and then just start working and having that kind of demand at a young age is just incredible.

This podcast focuses on Criterion’s Eclipse Series of DVDs. Hosts David Blakeslee and Trevor Berrett give an overview of each box and offer their perspectives on the unique treasures they find inside. In this first episode of a two-part series, David and Trevor are joined by Pablo Knote to discuss three films (I am Waiting, Rusty Knife and Take Aim at the Police Van) from Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir.
About the films:
From the late 1950s through the sixties, wild, idiosyncratic crime movies were the brutal and boisterous business of Nikkatsu, the oldest film studio in Japan. In an effort to attract youthful audiences growing increasingly accustomed to American and French big-screen imports, Nikkatsu began producing action potboilers (mukokuseki akushun, or “borderless action”) that incorporated elements of the western, comedy, gangster, and teen-rebel genres. This bruised and bloody collection represents a standout cross section of what Nikkatsu had to offer,...

Smarthouse Creative's new distribution arm has acquired "Chatty Catties," the debut feature from Pablo Valencia that won the Fipresci Prize at the 2015 Seattle International Film Festival. The dark comedy, produced by Cecilia Curran and co-written by Valencia and Dicky Bahto, features the voice talents of a cast of deaf and hearing-impaired actors led by John Autry II, a graduate of No Limits, the country’s only theater group for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. Autry voices the sassy tabby Leonard, who is at odds with his human roommate Shelby (Megan Hensley), whose own emotional problems limit her abilities to provide for the most basic of Leonard’s needs. But when she begins a relationship with kind-hearted musician (Matthew Grathwol), Leonard sees a brighter future for both him and his owner, but it won’t come without a few emotional fireworks along the way. "I am positively through the roof to have found a distributor like Smarthouse.

If you need another reason to obsess over Idris Elba, he just broke a nearly 90-year "flying mile" speed record in the UK on Thursday. In the "flying mile," a car's speed is timed between two points one mile apart from each other. The driver is also allowed to get up to speed before entering the timed zone. Idris, who drove on Pendine Sands beach in southern Wales, averaged 180.4 mph and hit a top speed of 186.4 mph, beating out motor racing journalist Sir Malcolm Campbell's 1927 record of 174.8 mph. Malcolm drove a Napier-Campbell Blue Bird race car, while Idris drove his Bentley Continental Gt Speed. According to Bentley, Idris's car was a standard production car and was not modified for the test. The impressive task was captured for Idris Elba: No Limits, a new Discovery Channel series that will air in July. And with skills like this, those rumors...

As if Idris Elba had to prove any further that he'd make a perfect James Bond. The dashing British actor broke the U.K. land-speed "flying mile" record on Sunday, averaging 180.4 miles per hour and topping out at 186.4 miles per hour while driving on a beach in Wales. While the stunt certainly seemed tailor-made for Top Gear (which will supposedly be returning to the BBC in 2016 after giving Jeremy Clarkson the boot), it was actually for the upcoming Discovery Channel series Idris Elba: No Limits. And Bentley was of course happy to share the credit, the Luther star having crushed the previous record of 174.2 miles an hour in a Bentley Continental Gt Speed. Bentley says that the car was...

Speed-lover Idris Elba has broken the 'Flying Mile' record for his new TV series.
The Luther actor surpassed Sir Malcolm Campbell's land speed record on Pendine Sands in South Wales over the weekend.
Filming his four-part Discovery Channel series Idris Elba: No Limits, the actor reached speeds of 180.361 mph.
"I'm absolutely elated to have broken the 'Flying Mile' at Pendine Sands," Elba said after his achievement.
"It's an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell."
Sir Malcolm Campbell set the record of 174.8mph nearly 90 years ago in his iconic Napier-Campbell Bluebird vehicle.
Elba drove a Bentley Continental Gt Speed, with his record being verified by the UK Timing Association.
No Limits will air on Discovery in the summer, and will see Elba explore his love for drag racing, rally driving and aerobatics.

Jennifer Lawrence and Director Francis Lawrence Are the Latest to Take Over James Cameron’s The Dive
In the fall of 2003, James Cameron filmed the record-breaking “no limits” free dive of Pipin Ferreras, which was a special event commemorating the death of Ferreras’s wife, Audrey Mestre. A year earlier, she drowned attempting the same feat of reaching a depth of 170 meters (557.7 feet) while holding her breath. During the press conference for the 2003 dive, Cameron confirmed earlier reports from that summer that he would be making a movie about the couple, and it would wind up being based on Ferreras’s 2004 memoir, “The Dive: A Story of Love and Obsession.” More than a decade later, Cameron has been focusing his directorial interests on the Avatar movies, but he’s continued developing the project with other filmmakers coming on board to take the helm. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) became attached back in 2012, and now Francis Lawrence is the latest substitution, according to The Wrap. He also has an actress joining him for the role...

Let’s look at the bright side!
Some rituals help keep us focused throughout the year. This marks the 4th time I have looked back at all the good things that occurred in the film biz and listed them out for all of us. Tracking them through year, keeps me from abandoning hope. Sometimes they may just be the silver lining in the storm cloud, but nonetheless they keep me going, keep me convinced that in fact we truly are: building it better together. I hope they do something close to that for you. It’s been a good year, and I have thirty two morsels to tempt you with. And of course the year’s not through yet, so perhaps you have some to add to this too.
If you’ve encountered elements of this list earlier on my postings in Film Comment and on Keyframe, pay careful attention...

Jerry Seinfeld isn't the only person showing off classic cars on YouTube. Ken Block, the co-founder of DC Shoes and a professional rally car racer, has returned with the seventh installment of his Gymkhana series, in which he stunt-drives his way through Los Angeles in a customized 1965 Ford Mustang. The Gymkhana videos always carry brand partners in tow, and this time, Block's apparel company, Hoonigan, has partnered with Ford and Need for Speed: No Limits, an upcoming installment in the long-running video game franchise. This time around, the video is themed around notable Los Angeles landmarks. Running from the Friday 26th of September to Sunday 28th, the Fingal Film Festival has revealed it's line-up, offering everything from workshops to screening of some of the finest independent films from all over the world. The festival unofficially begins Friday morning with an animation workshop with Rob Cullen from Boulder Media (responsible for Cartoon Networks the Amazing World of Gumball), while the afternoon will play host to a screening of Irish feature documentary One Ocean: No Limits, which follows the journey of one Irish novice rower as he attempts to row across the Atlantic Ocean, from Morocco to Barbados, a part of a crew of six. Later that evening the festival will officially kick off with the premier of Gia Copolla's (daughter of Gian-Carlo and granddaughter of Francis Ford) teenage drama Palo Alto, starring Emma Roberts, James Franco, and Val Kilmer, based on Franco's short story collection of the same name.
