Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Severin Films has been one of those companies for the past five years that have been releasing some great flicks on DVD and Blu-Ray. Their first release, the 1983 shot-on-video slasher called Sledgehammer. Read on for the official press release.

The Film:
At the ripe old age of 80, Jess Franco isn’t collecting dust. He’s still making movies, as evident in this 2010 experimental “nudie-cutie” Paula-Paula, which has been given a wider release thanks to a newly founded Intervision Pictures Corp. Running a mere 66 minutes, the film’s been dubbed an “audiovisual experience”. Hardcore Franco fans will collect every one of his films on DVD, from the great (like The Awful Dr. Orloff) to the atrocious (Oasis of the Zombies). Where does Paula-Paula fall?
Somewhere in between.
Within these 66 minutes of its running time, there’s a minute plot, which has a night club entertainer institutionalized for a murder of another stripper, but Franco uses this plot line ambiguously. Paula-Paula is more of a digital experiment, something that is echoed in the disc’s extras, but it does feature some typical Franco elements. Like his sex films, there’s plenty of long,...

It seems like over the course of the last few years a ton of new DVD labels are popping up specifically to deal with exploitation and grindhouse cinema. I, for one, am completely okay with this trend. Just a few weeks ago, another label made its intentions known, and they look like they'll be getting a great start in the business.
Intervision Picture Corporation is yet another label, like my beloved Arrow Video in the UK, trying to bring back the Video Nasty/Early VHS feel to home video. As you can see from their video trailer below, they've certainly got the feel for this type of home video nailed. Larry Gold, a veteran of VHS distribution from the early days of home video has chosen some really great titles to whet home viewers' appetites.
First up in January will be something old and something new from EuroHorror legend, Jess Franco.
