Bob Newhart, the deadpan star of “The Bob Newhart” show, has passed away at the age of 94. The news of Newhart’s passing was announced by his longtime publicist Jerry Digney.
George Robert Newhart was born on September 5, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois. The young Newhart was raised Roman Catholic, with his sister Mary Joan becoming a nun later in life. He enrolled at Loyola University of Chicago and graduated with a bachelor’s in business management in 1952. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War until 1954. He attended Loyola University’s law school for a time but later dropped out. Newhart then worked as a clerk in an unemployment office and as an accountant.
In 1958, he took to being an advertising copywriter for a prominent Chicago film and television producer. In his free time he’d record scenarios and skits he’d utilize as audition tapes.

CBS sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" was a staple for American TV audiences of the '70s, thanks in large part to clever writing and Newhart's much-loved performance as psychologist and comedic straight man Bob Hartley. The show ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978, but it had a surprisingly long pop cultural afterlife. Characters from "The Bob Newhart Show" have popped up in everything from "Murphy Brown" to "St. Elsewhere" to "Alf," though their most famous reappearance came in the jokey "Newhart" finale in 1990. In it, Newhart wakes up in bed next to his wife from the previous series and discovers that this entire sitcom was all an elaborate dream. "The Bob Newhart Show," it turned out, was his real world.
When it wasn't being resurrected for increasingly meta crossovers, "The Bob Newhart Show" was a pretty straightforward sitcom about the life of a mental health clinician and the assortment...

Steve Lawrence, the charismatic Grammy- and Emmy-winning crooner who delighted audiences for decades in nightclubs, on concert stages and in film and television appearances, died Thursday. He was 88.
Lawrence, who partnered in a popular act with his wife of 55 years, the late Eydie Gormé, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, a publicidst announced.
With his boyish good looks, silky voice and breezy personality, Lawrence broke into show business when he won a talent competition on Arthur Godfrey’s CBS show and signed with King Records as a teenager. The singer chose to stay old school and resist the allure of rock ‘n’ roll.
“It didn’t attract me as much,” Lawrence once said. “I grew up in a time period when music was written by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and Sammy Cahn and Julie Stein.

There are narrative flourishes and then there are narrative flourishes. And one in the new film from director Amy Glazer (Seducing Charlie Barker, The Surrogate) is a doozy. How much you appreciate this heartwarming drama about a female pilot who discovers that her grandmother may actually be a legendary figure in aviation history will depend on how much you’re willing to go along with its major plot twist, which won’t be revealed here but is relatively easy to figure out. But if you’re willing to suspend some disbelief, 7000 Miles, recently showcased at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, offers myriad pleasures, not the least of which is a terrific performance by Wendie Malick. The veteran sitcom actress (Dream On, Just Shoot Me, Hot in Cleveland) anchors the film with her charismatic turn in a rare leading role that Katharine Hepburn would have killed for.

Although “Schmigadoon!” is now campaigning for this year’s Emmys as a scripted variety series, its cast members can still be nominated as comedic actors. Springfield soon launched his solo career with his debut single, “Speak to the Sky.” He also released a few albums with Columbia Records, including 1973’s Comic Book Heroes and 1974’s Mission: Magic!

Although no member of the Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated “Yellowstone” cast has yet been individually recognized by the organization, the team can now take pride in the fact that a performer within their recently expanded franchise has caught the attention of their guild peers. Four years after losing on his film ensemble and supporting bids for “A Star Is Born,” Sam Elliott is a Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor nominee thanks to his work on the “Yellowstone” prequel program “1883.” If he succeeds on this outing, the 78-year-old will be the second oldest man to ever pull off a solo SAG Award win for TV acting.

In the 16 years since 22-year-old America Ferrera was honored by the Screen Actors Guild for her work on “Ugly Betty,” she has held tight to the record for youngest individual SAG Award winner for TV. It was 28 years ago that Jamie Lee Curtis attended the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Tasker in the action comedy “True Lies.” She would watch as Dianne Wiest accepted the prize for her portrayal of another Helen (Sinclair) in the gangster gag show “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Now, almost three decades later, Curtis has once again been singled out by the SAG Awards. She contends for the ensemble award as part of the cast of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” And she has another shot at the supporting actress title for her turn as the unpitying IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre. “Everything Everywhere” holds an overwhelming lead in the Gold Derby odds for SAG’s top honor, making it almost inevitable that Curtis will become an official champion come February 26.
But can she make it two for two?...

Valerie Bertinelli can now add crime stopper to her resume!
The Food Network star took to her Instagram Story Wednesday to share that she caught some alleged burglars on camera outside of her home following a “string of robberies” in her neighbourhood.
Bertinelli said that the homes of several of her neighbours, including her next-door neighbour, had been burglarized. In her Stories, she shared video footage and photos via her security camera, of two men she alleges are burglars. The 62-year-old actress also shared shots of the men she alleged “came to “scope out” her home Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
The video sees a man wearing a black hat and carrying several bags, including a large backpack, approach the camera before pausing and looking around briefly. He then turns and walks back in the direction he came from.
“This is one of the men that came to scope out my house last night.

Kym Whitley, Tisha Campbell and Yvette Nicole Brown are set to star in “Act Your Age,” a multi-camera comedy series from MGM Television that is expected to premiere on Bounce in the spring.
Bounce, the digital multicast and streaming channel that targets Black viewers, has given the series a 16-episode order. It’s the third original scripted comedy series scheduled to join the Bounce lineup, on the heels of “Johnson” and “Finding Happy.” The show is also a notable new piece of business for MGM Television since the studio was acquired by Amazon earlier this year.
“Act Your Age” reads like a “Golden Girls”-esque ensemble for a new era. Whitley plays Bernadette, a successful, no-nonsense real estate developer. Campbell plays Keisha, described as “the wild card of the group who is always up to something.” Brown, who is billed as a special guest star, plays Angela, the former First Lady of Norfolk,...

With individual notices for “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” and an ensemble bid for the former likely coming her way, Julia Garner is poised to pick up more Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in 2023 than any other performer. Being singled out for her turns on both Netflix series would not only make the 28-year-old the ninth dual TV contender in SAG Awards history, but also the youngest person in general to ever be individually nominated by the guild for multiple performances at once.
Garner’s work as the morally complex criminal Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” has already brought her two SAG Award nominations each for Best TV Drama Ensemble and Best TV Drama Actress (2019 and 2021). According to Gold Derby’s predictions, she is effectively running fifth in both races this year, with “The Crown” cast and its new star, Imelda Staunton, being the respective frontrunners.
