Grim and confronting short movie
Groverdox4 March 2022
"Gisberta" is a grim, confronting short movie from Germany about a boy who lives in an orphanage and shares a room with older boys who bully him. When a young woman (the titular Gisberta) starts work at the orphanage, the older boys immediately aggressively sexualise her, but Elisha, the young boy, ends up bonding with her. Unfortunately when the other boys notice their spending time together, the bullying and sexual aggression only gets worse, leading to a fateful confrontation.

The short film is harrowing, but believable. Its performances are resplendent; it feels like you're watching a documentary. I don't think I could ever watch it again, but it certainly made me feel something, and isn't that what we watch movies for?
