- Lawyer Sten Torstenssen tells Wallander he believes his old father's death in a car crash was homicide but Wallander is reluctant to act until Sten is found hanged and the pathologist claims that he was murdered. Sten's secretary shows Wallander a postcard of Africa with a text threatening the lives of father and son and wealthy philanthropist Harderberg, a client of Sten's, admits to also having received one. All were posted from the same hotel, apparently by industrialist Jurgen Nordfeldt, who survives an attempt to kill him. Nordfeldt had stumbled on a racket importing body parts from Africa which Wallander, helped by ex-cop Anders, now Harderberg's security guard, must resolve.—don @ minifie-1
- Kurt Wallander is approached by an old friend, Sten Torstenssen, who asks him to look into his father Gustaf's death. The police have determined that the old man's death was likely an accident due to excessive speed but there are several anomalies in the case. Wallander has been on leave and hasn't yet recovered from having killed a suspect in his last case and so refuses to help. When Sten is subsequently found dead, an apparent suicide, Wallander begins to piece it all together. The Tortenssens ran their own small law firm and the elder Gustaf worked almost exclusively on behalf of a charitable foundation financed by the wealthy Alfred Harderberg who has inherited his wealth and now devotes his time and money to doing good work in Africa. When Wallander learns that both Gustaf and Harderberg received identical written threats, it's clear to Wallander that both deaths were murder.—garykmcd
