These days, it’s rare to hear something cool about programming on the Netflix streaming service that involves older films rather than the next batch of “Netflix Original Films” they have in the works – but here’s something very cool: Netflix has announced that they’re teaming up with the New York Film Critics Circle to launch a screening series called Hitch! The Original Cinema Influencer at the Paris Theater, which is the longest-running arthouse cinema in New York City and is also Manhattan’s only remaining single-screen cinema, as well as the borough’s largest movie theater, with 535 seats. If you can’t make it to the Paris Theater for the screenings, you’ll be glad to hear that a collection of classic Hitchcock films will also be available to stream on Netflix as of June 1st.

After a poor opening to 2025, one may wonder why so many in the movie theater business repeated the mantra “Survive ’til ’25” if this was how a year without pandemic or strike-induced release delays was going to start— 12% behind the first quarter of 2024.
But for exhibitors, much of the optimism for 2025 was rooted in a summer slate that promises a much more consistent level of grosses from week to week and, if a couple of films overperform, could exceed the $4.03 billion domestic total earned in summer 2023, which was led by films like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and the historic duo of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Whether that optimistic outlook will come true is something industry insiders can’t agree on. The conservative estimates coming from some studio insiders who spoke to TheWrap predict a summer that is 4-8% down from the $3.6 billion summer of 2024, which saw...

Josh Brolin And Julia Garner Starrer Weapons ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Something chilling is creeping into theatres this summer—and it’s coming from the mind behind one of the most unnerving horror hits of recent years. Weapons, the upcoming film by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, has just dropped its trailer, and fans of eerie mysteries have plenty to be excited about. Josh Brolin teams up with Julia Garner for the upcoming unsettling horror film. Set in the quiet fictional town of Maybrook, the story kicks off with a disturbing event: at exactly 2:17 a.m. on what seemed like a normal Wednesday, 17 schoolchildren rise from their beds, leave their homes without a trace, and disappear into the night—never to be seen again.
Julia Garner plays the role of Justine Gandy, a Maybrook Elementary teacher who arrives at school one morning only to find her entire class missing. Meanwhile, Brolin...

Alfred Hitchcock enjoyed making his audiences suffer, and now that uneasy feeling is coming to Netflix in large doses. The streamer said today that it will add several of the horror-suspense master’s best loved films, including The Birds, Vertigo, Rear Window, his final film Family Plot and more.
They join the filmmaker’s beloved and dreaded masterpiece Psycho, which is streaming now on Netflix.
Also headed to the service are Frenzy, The Man Who Knew Too Much and others, along with Hitchcock, a narrative feature about the legend directed by Sacha Gervasi. The new online collection also features films inspired by Hitchcock’s mastery such as Us and Barbarian.
Also on the horizon is “Hitch! The Original Cinema Influencer,” a six-week screening series at the 90-year-old Paris Theatre in Manhattan featuring more than 50 films including three dozen by Hitchcock. Many will be shown in 35mm, including Hitchcock’s Rear Window,...

Zach Cregger’s sophomore horror feature Weapons has unveiled a new trailer, and if the internet response is anything to go by, the director of Barbarian is on track to redefine what modern horror can achieve. Set to open in UK cinemas on 8 August, Weapons plunges viewers into a labyrinth of paranoia, grief and escalating terror after a classroom of children inexplicably vanishes in the middle of the night.
Led by Emmy-winner Julia Garner as primary school teacher Justine Gandy, Weapons weaves together a fractured web of personal torment, small-town suspicion and supernatural unease. When every child in Justine’s class disappears at precisely 2:17am, parents and officials are quick to turn on her, none more so than Archer Graff, played with quiet menace by Josh Brolin. As police and families scramble for answers, whispers begin to spread that this tragedy might be linked to something much older, and darker,...

Get ready to scream: Netflix is bringing a collection of Alfred Hitchcock films to the streaming service this June — and, despite chief Ted Sarandos’ belief that the movie-theater biz is “outdated,” the company will showcase the legendary filmmaker’s work at its Paris Theater in New York City in a six-week series.
Starting June 1, a collection of classic Hitchcock films will be available to stream in the U.S. Those will include “Vertigo,” “Rear Window,” “Frenzy,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Family Plot” and “The Birds.” Currently, U.S. customers can stream Hitchcock’s genre-defining masterpiece “Psycho,” now available on Netflix in the country.
In addition, Netflix’s Hitchcock collection will include films inspired by the British-born director, such as Jordan Peele’s “Us” and Zach Cregger’s “Barbarian,” as well as narrative feature “Hitchcock” directed by Sacha Gervasi.

One of the most salient shortcomings of Netflix as a streaming service is that its film library at any given moment is frustratingly devoid of movies made before 1980. In the streamer's defense, their focus since 2013 (when they hit binge-viewing paydirt with "House of Cards") has been on generating a raft of original programming in order to cut back their need to license classic television shows and films they do not own. Additionally, the success of streaming services like The Criterion Channel and Tubi, which cater to cinephiles with an array of pre-1980 movies, suggests that this market has already voted with its dollars. This is somewhat understandable, but it also does a huge disservice to young film fans who, for example, might fall so hard for Mike Flannagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" that they desperately need to see Robert Wise's much-lauded 1963 take on Shirley Jackson's horror novel.

Following last week's eerie first teaser, Warner Bros. and New Line have released the first full trailer and poster for Barbarian director Zach Cregger's highly-anticipated second feature, Weapons.
Though descriptions suggest that the CinemaCon footage was slightly different (there's no clown at the end), this looks every bit as creepy and unsettling as those reports claimed.
The trailer begins with a child's voiceover recounting what occurred at 2:17 am on the night every student (bar one?) in Mrs. Gandy's (Julia Garner) classroom "woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark, and they never came back." From there, we're introduced to Josh Brolin's character, who clearly blames Gandy for his son's disappearance, as the headmaster (Benedict Wong) advises the teacher to take some time off.

There’s something wrong in Maybrook.
From New Line Cinema and Zach Cregger, the wholly original mind behind Barbarian, comes a new horror/thriller: Weapons.
When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.
The film stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
Cregger directs from his own screenplay, and also produces alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin executive producing. The filmmaker’s creative team behind the camera includes director of photography Larkin Seiple, production designer Tom Hammock, editor Joe Murphy and costume designer Trish Sommerville. The music is by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay and Zach Cregger.

The new trailer for Zach Cregger’s Weapons, told from the point of view of a child, sets up an eerie tale about a small community thrown into turmoil after 17 schoolchildren from a single class go missing one night. No one knows what happened, or who’s to blame — though their teacher Miss Gandy (Julia Garner) is immediately under suspicion.
Cregger (who got his start as a founding member of the Whitest Kids U’ Know comedy troupe) madea big splash with the critically acclaimed Barbarian — in his review for Consequence, Clint Worthington declared it “your new bonkers horror favorite of 2022.” According to Deadline, the competition around acquiring Weapons was so intense that when Jordan Peele’s production company lost the bidding, Peele fired his long-time management team. Cregger, meanwhile, will be moving onto a new take on Resident Evil with his next movie, due out in 2026.

New Line Cinema released a short teaser for Weapons just a week ago that showed kids leaving their beds in the middle of the night. Now, the studio’s following up with a full trailer that sort of offers more details on why a classroom-full of students decided to walk out of their homes and disappear at 2:17am.
New Line Cinema offers this synopsis: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Julia Garner (Ozark) stars as the teacher of the kids who vanished. The film also stars Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
Weapons was written and directed by Barbarian‘s Zach Cregger. Cregger also serves as a producer along with Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz,...

Netflix is making it the summer of Alfred Hitchcock in New York. The streaming giant will bring 36 Hitchcock films to its Paris Theater in New York, as well as a dozen more features connected to the director — from those he influenced (Robert Zemeckis’s What Lies Beneath) to those which influenced him (Fritz Lang’s M).
The series — Hitch! The Original Cinema Influencer — will run from May 16 to June 29 at the Paris Theater, which Netflix purchased in 2019. The films range from Hitchcock’s early works such as Blackmail to enduring hits such as Psycho and The Birds.
Thirty five of the films will play on 35 mm, including Birds, The Man Who Knew Too Much, North By Northwest, Rear Window and Vertigo. The New York Film Critics Circle is co-presenting the series.

Zach Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian got a nifty little teaser a week ago, and the official trailer today amps up the creep factor. The film revolves around a bunch of kids from the fictional town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania, who flee their homes in the dead of night, and who run down the street with their arms outstretched in ways that remind me of how my boyfriend would torment me during lockdown when we were trying to keep each other sane.
Julia Garner, firmly in her horror era following her roles in Apartment 7A and Wolf Man, stars as a Maybrook school teacher. A mystery is afoot in the film, and given that Barbarian was both a horror film and some kind of weirdo treatise on gentrification, it’s easy to imagine Cregger weaving another hot-button issue into the story. The logline reads: “When all but one child from the...

A full class of kids go missing in Zach Cregger’s next movie and we have a trailer to prove it. More on Weapons below.
Ever since Barbarian premiered, all eyes have been on Zach Cregger and what the director might do next. He was linked to a new Clue film for a while, but has seemingly now swapped that out Resident Evil.
But before Cregger heads to the world of video game adaptations, he’s treating us to another original horror film, titled Weapons. With the film release date only a couple months away, Warner Bros. has just released a new trailer to tie us over.
Take a look below:
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Weapons looks absolutely terrifying. Cregger isn’t the first to utilise creepy kids in his film to elicit terror, but if Barbarian is anything to go by, audiences are in for another wholly unique horror trip.

The first trailer for “Weapons,” the new horror film from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger starring Josh Brolin, has been unveiled.
Brolin stars alongside Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich in Cregger’s sophomore feature. The cast also includes Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan, Cary Christopher and June Diane Raphael. It follows the disappearance of a group of school children in the middle of the night in a small Florida community.
Roy Lee and Miri Yun produce the film via Vertigo, alongside Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz via BoulderLight Pictures. New Line handles the film’s theatrical release.
Cregger’s Airbnb horror film “Barbarian” was a surprise success in 2022, earning the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend. The filmmaker originally started his career in the comedy group Whitest Kids U’Know and told Variety that the switch between genres wasn’t quite as drastic as it may seem.

When Zach Cregger's fiendishly twisty horror film "Barbarian" stunned Hollywood in 2022 by grossing $45.4 million against a $4.5 million budget, every studio in town was eager to make whatever movie next sprouted from the writer-director's imagination. This wasn't because studios were looking to duplicate the low-budget success of "Barbarian." No, this was all about getting into a hopefully long-term business with an exciting new voice in horror who's likely just barely scratched the surface of his potential.
Ultimately, New Line Cinema won a multi-studio bidding war for the rights to Cregger's "Weapons," the premise of which has been shrouded in secrecy for months. All we knew for a while was that the film centers on a bizarre incident in which 17 children in a small Pennsylvania town spontaneously flee their houses at 2:17 Am, sprinting off into the night and never returning.

Last night, at 2:17am, every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark, and never came back. Watch the official trailer for Barbarian director Zach Cregger’s Weapons, in theaters on August 8, 2025.
Here’s the brand new official synopsis from New Line Cinema: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Much like Barbarian, Cregger’s new movie is cloaked in a web of darkness, with even this trailer refusing to spoil pretty much anything about the movie. All we know is the basic gist of the storyline, with the trailer teasing that it’s only the beginning of this nightmarish mystery.

After shifting from his comedy days in The Whitest Kids U’ Know to his horror debut Barbarian, Zach Cregger’s next project has been highly anticipated and highly secretive. Led by Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan, Weapons took the summer slot previously occupied by Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, and now WB has unveiled the first teaser.
Here’s the brief synopsis: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.”
Cregger directs from his own screenplay, and also produces alongside Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, with Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin executive producing. Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger has assembled a strong cast for his mysterious horror project called Weapons, including Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives)… and we’re going to have the chance to see that cast face the horrors Cregger has conjured up when Weapons reaches theatres on August 8th. With that date swiftly approaching, Warner Bros is getting creative with their marketing. Indeed, they’ve just posted over two hours of creepy security camera footage tied into the film’s central premise, being that in the middle of the night, a bunch of suburban kids walked out of their homes into the night and were never seen again. J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the producing duo behind BoulderLight Pictures whose credits include Companion and Barbarian, are looking to deliver another twisty sci-fi thriller in Cut Outs, Deadline reports today.
Cut Outs is an original sci-fi thriller spec script by writer Isaac Louis García.
Naturally, plot details are under wraps at this time, but the expectation is that it’ll follow in the same unpredictable vein as BoulderLight’s recent genre hits. Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, was released in January after a mysterious marketing campaign that kept things close to the vest. Zach Cregger’s feature debut, Barbarian, took a similar approach in preserving its narrative surprises before release.
The BoulderLight team is also behind Cregger’s follow-up, Weapons, releasing this summer, as well as Jaume Collet-Serra’s Play Dead and Rob Savage’s Molepeople. Not only does this signal that BoulderLight is keeping busy with their genre slate,...

An alum of the AFI Conservatory, García has worked in multiple writers’ rooms, the most recent being for Duster, the crime thriller series reuniting Lost‘s J.J. Zach Cregger is citing how Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 drama “Magnolia” inspired his “horror epic,” “Weapons.” Sure, it may seem like the iconic star-studded “Magnolia” doesn’t have much in common with Cregger’s (albeit secretive) sophomore film “Weapons,” but the writer/director is crediting how “Magnolia” gave him “permission” to think big.
“I just like that kind of unapologetic, ‘This is an epic,'” Cregger told Entertainment Weekly of the “Magnolia” effect. “I love that movie. I love that kind of bold scale. It gave me permission when I was writing this to shoot for the stars and make it an epic. I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that.”
Even the aesthetic choices in “Weapons” have nods to PTA’s masterpiece: Cregger said that “Weapons” star Alden Ehrenreich has a mustache for the role as a reference to John C. Reilly’s “Magnolia” look.

Zach Cregger’s (Barbarian) next movie Weapons has been described as a “horror epic” for a while now, and it’s an ambitious branding that the filmmaker is fully embracing in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly this week. Inspired by Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, of all things, Weapons is said to be “more ambitious in every way” than Cregger’s feature debut.
The plot of the mysterious Weapons, which will be released in theaters on August 8, 2025? Entertainment Weekly details, “The moment the clocks turned 2:17 a.m. on a seemingly random Wednesday morning, 17 children in the fictional Pennsylvania town of Maybrook woke from their beds, exited their homes, and ran into the night. They never came back.”
“That mystery is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie,” Cregger teases. “The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places.

Talk about following a tough act. Sony's Until Dawn opened this week, days after Ryan Coogler's Sinners defied horror movie expectations both critically and commercially. Until Dawn will struggle to hold its ground in its debut weekend, while Sinners is expected to blaze past box office projections, like it did in its debut frame. Inspired by the video game of the same name, the movie opened to mediocre reviews and not-so-promising audience reception, which certainly doesn't bode well for its future. These missteps will ultimately work in Sinners' favor, as more casual audiences give it a chance thanks to the excellent word-of-mouth that it has been attracting.
Until Dawn currently holds a "rotten" 51% rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. But the film's audience score on the platform stands at a significantly superior 71%. A more accurate reflection of audience sentiment can be observed in the C+ CinemaScore that...

Julia Garner was shocked to realize she was cast as the Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Garner, who plays the female version of the character Aka Shalla-Bal, makes her MCU debut with the franchise reboot prequel. However, after a chaotic meeting with director Matt Shakman that spanned discussions of “Communism, Brutalist architecture,” and more, Garner assumed she missed out on the villain role.
“I was a very big fan of Matt’s, so there was already, in my mind, like, ‘I should probably meet with Matt Shakman because he’s a very smart director and I love his work,’” Garner told Entertainment Weekly, adding that at first she was even “confused” to be in talks for the Silver Surfer as she thought the character was a man (“I’ll play anything”).

Weapons: Eerie First Teaser Trailer For Barbarian Director Zach Cregger's Next Horror Movie Released

The creepy first teaser for Barbarian Zack Cregger's next horror film, Weapons, has been released online.
Up until details from the full trailer were disclosed following a recent CinemaCon screening, the only information we had been given about the movie is that it was developed as “a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”
Warner Bros. has also released an official synopsis, but it doesn't really give us much more to go on: "When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance."
In the trailer, we see the children rushing out of their homes at 2:17 am, as a voiceover tells the father of one of the missing kids, Mr. Graff, that he understands his frustration,...

Be warned, major spoilers for "Companion" follow.
Ryan Coogler's vampire film "Sinners" made a deserved smash at the box office this weekend, but audiences who stayed home got to enjoy a different Warner Bros.-distributed horror picture: Drew Hancock's "Companion," which joined streaming service Max on Friday, April 18 and has since become its no. 1 ranked movie. The movie opens with their meet-cute, and Iris, head over heels, narrates that meeting Josh was the first moment in her life she felt true purpose. The second? "The day I killed him."
Zach Cregger, director of the 2022 horror film "Barbarian," was a producer on "Companion." Like that picture, "Companion" makes a huge swerve after its first act, turning into a completely different movie than you'd expected. After a slew of strange videos and the new website MaybrookMissing.net were published online, New Line Cinema has finally given us a teaser trailer for Zach Cregger’s upcoming horror film Weapons. Barbarian director’s new Weapons teaser questions why all the children ran away in the dark of night

Someone gives the Pied Piper a run for his money in today’s teaser trailer for Weapons. The latest film from the director of 2022’s Barbarian remains shrouded in mystery, though new footage from the upcoming horror film offers a few breadcrumbs. Zach Cregger shocked the horror community in 2022 with Barbarian, an experience that’s better if you go into it knowing as little as possible. Barbarian captured the hearts of horror fans with its dank atmosphere, powerful performances, and twisted premise. Can Cregger set cinemas ablaze with his sophomore effort? We’ll find out when the film comes to theaters on August 8.
In Zack Cregger’s Weapons teaser, an unknown interviewer speaks with a troubled father named Mr. Graff about a mysterious phenomenon involving kids disappearing in the middle of the night. With no explanation, kids ran from their homes at roughly 2:17 am. No one forced them or pulled them from safety.

Zach Cregger is building out his “Barbarian” cinematic universe with the highly-anticipated “Weapons.” While little is known about Cregger’s latest horror/thriller, New Line Cinema chief Richard Brenner described the film as being “batshit insane.”
Julia Garner stars as a teacher whose entire classroom of kids goes missing in the middle of the night. Josh Brolin is one of the many parents demanding answers. Did Garner’s character lure them away? Is this supernatural? And who is orchestrating a slew of murders in town…could it be the children?

Three years ago, actor and comedian, Zach Cregger, pulled a complete 180 and handed audiences one of the best horror movies in recent years with the release of Barbarian. Serving as his feature-length directorial and writing debut, the film pulled Cregger from his comedic roots and revealed the darker (yet still at times comical) side of his mind in an unnerving horror flick that starred Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, and Bill Skarsgård. In the time since, audiences have been eager for more to come from Cregger’s darkside, and now the wait is finally starting to wind down. Today Warner Bros. has finally shared the first official teaser to come from the director's latest production, Weapons.
Short, spooky, and largely silent, our first real look at Weapons showcases the film's primary plot when a group of children disappears into the night. The ticking of a clock can be heard in the background,...

Barbarian was one of the best films of 2022, and director Zach Cregger is now ready to release his next project: Weapons. The star-studded horror is filled with familiar names.
Following the success of Barbarian, Cregger has written, produced, and directed the upcoming Weapons. The horror is set for release on Aug. 8, and Warner Bros. has just released a chilling teaser. Weapons follows a small community in a fictional town after a group of kids from the same class mysteriously vanish in one night at the same time.
The 40-second teaser starts at 2:17 am. While the residents of the fictional Maybrook town are asleep, several security cameras show a group of children running away with their hands wide by their side at exactly the same time.
"Mr. Graff, I understand your passion. And I don't mind having these conversations with you because, God forbid, if it was my child, I'd be demanding answers,...

Filmmaker Zach Cregger used to be known as one of the actors and comedians from the comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U Know.” But all of that changed with 2022’s horror thriller “Barbarian,” which dazzled audiences and put Cregger, a film school graduate who had been quietly directing a lot of TV in the last few years, firmly on the map as a director to watch.

Director Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" is a genuinely shocking descent into horror that features more twists and turns than a maze. It's the poster child for movies that every viewer should go into knowing nothing, and its bold imagination proves that Cregger is one of the most unique voices working in contemporary horror. After unleashing one of the best movies of 2022, his new feature, "Weapons," looks set to continue this momentum -- and the first trailer will give you more questions than answers, which is a good thing, as Cregger excels at creating nightmares that unravel before descending into pure chaos.
"Weapons" tells the story of Mrs. Gandy (Julia Garner), an elementary school teacher whose entire class goes missing after getting out of bed and walking into darkness during the night -- at the exact same time no less. The horrific event is an unexplainable occurrence, but being that she's their teacher,...

A new month has brought another wave of streaming acquisitions for Max subscribers to enjoy. The streaming platform just added a wide array of films to its library in April, including one of 2024’s late financial and critical hits and an early 2025 thriller that still ranks as one of the best movies of the year so far. April, in other words, gives you the chance to catch up on a pair of recent films that you may have missed. There are, of course, more than a few easily recommendable movies released before last year that have also made their way to Max this month.
Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies streaming on Max in April.
