One of Netflix's most popular original horror movies of all time is getting a sequel this October! On July 11, the streaming service announced the release date and shared the first teaser for The Platform 2, a sequel to the 2019 Spanish film that raked in more than 82.8 million views and currently ranks as the no. 5 most-viewed non-English film in the Top Ten.
The Platform 2 will feature new characters played by Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian. If you watch Netflix frequently, you might recognize Smit from the Spanish crime drama The Snow Girl. Netflix is keeping most of the story details quiet for now, but here's what the logline says:

The highly anticipated sequel to sci-fi horror “The Platform” has set a release date, with the residents of The Pit returning to screens after five years.
The film is set to hit Netflix on Oct. 4, just in time for spooky season.
2019’s “The Platform” is one of the streamer’s most popular Spanish films ever, getting to the fifth spot in the non-English Film Top Ten category with over 82,800,000 views.
The film is set in a multi-storey prison nicknamed “The Pit” which sees its residents get increasingly desperate as they fight for survival.
The tower’s real name is the Vertical Self-Management Center and it works by allocating a handful of prisoners to each floor. When it comes to meals, a platform abundant with food slowly descends, stopping at each floor for a specific amount of time. But inevitably it means those at the top get first pick – while those...

Benedict Cumberbatch’s new six-part series that follows a desperate father in search of his missing son is now dominating Netflix’s global chart, topping even the hyped third season of Bridgerton. It proves people’s never-ending interest in chilling crime stories.
Here are 5 miniseries that are similar to Eric and available for streaming on Netflix too.
1. Safe (2018)
This British miniseries is reminiscent of Eric more than others, as it also follows a father who has his child vanished from home. The show is led by the Dexter star, Michael C. Hall, who portrays a widowed surgeon whose daughter is missing.
Just like Eric, it blends a dark mystery story, full of intrigue and deception, with deep psychological drama of the protagonist, who devotes himself entirely to searching for his closest person.
2. The Snow Girl (2023)
Next comes a show that also focuses on the search for a missing child. Here...

After his little brother commits suicide, Noah Wolfson comes home to Antwerp, where he reluctantly reconnects with the ultra-Orthodox Haredi community that he left behind years ago. Soon he is dragged into his family's business in the diamond trade, which is in debt by more than 1 million euros and has several shady characters breathing down their necks.
Critics Say: 'While offering an insight into this guarded, little-seen community, the series also works well as a thriller. But, at its heart is the dependable dramatic staple of a powerful family in turmoil, battling to stay intact and afloat.' – The Age (Australia)

Spanish drama thrillers never go out of style. The theatrics and histrionics showcased in these shows never seem to end, and there is a large portion of the audience that enjoys such content. Elite, The Snow Girl, and Money Heist are some of the prime examples of thriller drama shows coming out of Netflix Spain. Holy Family is an eight-episodic series that was released last year and is about a family that seems to have decent social standing but is burdened by many secrets.
Season one began with middle-aged mothers Blanca, Gloria, and Alicia frequently meeting at an eatery to consume copious amounts of Margarita while they trudge through their lives as mothers. The show throws light on all kinds of issues these women face. Blanca has been married to a pilot while raising her son Lorenzo, who suffers from Down syndrome. Spanish producers taking part in a Spanish content showcase at the Berlinale Series Market on Monday debated what was jokingly referred to as the “devil’s bargain” offered by major streaming platforms that are propelling Spanish shows around the globe often at the cost of IP ownership.
Álex de la Iglesia of Madrid-based production powerhouse Pokeepsie Films said the company for years retained the IP of films that played in local cinemas. “We assumed there was no other model. Now, maybe we lose our IP, but suddenly our movies are in the houses of the whole planet. Maybe you have to sell your soul to these ‘diabolical’ platforms,” he joked. “But I can only say that working with the devil is worth it.,” he added.
De la Iglesia added that Spain’s production sector was running hot. “We are working a lot.” Spain, he added, had never seen so much production taking place.

This year’s Berlinale Series Market kicks off Monday as Spanish series “The Snow Girl,” a missing girl suspense thriller produced by Spain’s Atípica Films, has attracted huge heat for Netflix, punching 101.7 million hours watched in its first three weeks. Doing so, it ranked as the streamer’s No. 1 non-English show in the world over Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.
In all, Spain has more shows and movies in Netflix’s all time non-English Top 10s than any other country in the world, seven to France’s two, for example.
Spain, it could be argued, has cracked online. But its drama series industry wants to ring more options.

Prolific Andalusian production company La Claqueta has tapped award-winning screenwriter-producer Alberto Marini to direct rural thriller “Últimos días de caza” (“Last Days of Hunting.”)
Penned by José Cabeza, co-scribe on 2016’s “7 Years,” Netflix first Spanish original movie, “Last Days of Hunting” has a completed screenplay and has initiated financing.
The aim is to close the financing phase during this year and begin shooting second quarter 2024, probably in northern Spain.
“Last Days of Hunting” leads a growth-period for Seville-based La Claqueta, which is raising the ante in terms of film production ambitions.
“This is a noir that revolves around torpid masculinity; it is the story of volcanoes that don’t know how to release lava when they should and that explode inwards,” said Marini, who debuted as a helmer with 2015 horror feature “Summer Camp.”

Netflix’s latest star-packed rom-com “You People” struck gold with audiences last week, earning the No. 1 spot on the streaming charts and knocking “That ’90s Show” down to the fifth most-watched spot, the latest Wrap Report highlights. And Black households really bolstered the movie’s numbers.
Led by legendary comedian Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill, “You People” drew nearly 3 million households in its first weekend on Netflix, the most viewers for any recent Netflix original movie since last summer’s “The Gray Man,” according to the report, which uses TV viewership trends analyzed from Samba TV’s household panel of over 25 million connected TVs, including both linear and streaming consumption.
Helmed by “Black-Ish” creator Kenya Barris, the movie particularly resonated with Black households, who were 59 more likely to watch the movie than the national average. Viewership in the City of Brotherly Love, Atlanta and Detroit all significantly overindexed the national average by strong double digits.

The Snow Girl is a tense, well plotted thriller based on the novel La chica de nieve by Spanish writer Javier Castillo. Though it’s set in Málaga it shares a lot in common with Scandi-noir thrillers and it follows the story of a missing girl and the journalist with her own dark past attempting to solve the case.
There’s a lot going on in its season one finale, including the vaguest of suggestions of a potential season two – here’s a breakdown of what went down.
What happened to Amaya?
Amaya was kidnapped by Iris, one of her mother’s patients at her fertility clinic. Iris and her husband Santiago had been trying unsuccessfully to conceive a child and when they came across Amaya crying in the middle of the crowd, having been separated from her father, Iris decided to take her and make Amaya her daughter.

The Snow Girl is based on a 2020 novel by Spanish writer Javier Castillo. It tells the story of the abduction of a five-year old girl, Amaya Martín, from a crowded celebration for Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night is 5th January and it is the 12th day of Christmas, Christmas Day itself being the first (in case you ever wondered what the song or the Shakespeare play were on about). The Cabalgata de Reyes (Parade of Kings) is a Spanish festival held that evening that is especially popular with children, as during the colourful parade people playing the parts of the three kings from the story of the birth of Jesus hand out sweets to the crowd.

"I've been on this case for six years. All I want is to find the girl." Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer for the mystery-thriller series titled The Snow Girl, based on the Spanish novel of the same name. It's another crime thriller about a journalist trying to find out what happened to a missing girl. Is anyone outside of Spain familiar with this story? When a little girl goes missing during a parade in Málaga, a young newspaper journalist becomes fiercely insistent on helping Amaya's parents find her. During the Cavalcade of the Magi parade, the Martín family's daughter disappears. Miren takes on the case, determined to find her. The series stars Milena Smit as Miren, José Coronado, Aixa Villagrán, Tristán Ulloa, Loreto Mauleón, Julián Villagrán, Raúl Prieto, and Cecilia Freire. This almost seems like Spain's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but about a tough journalist trying...
