- It all comes down to this, America. Bachelor Jake will choose his co-pilot for life. Will it be Tenley or Vienna? Let's just pretend we all haven't read the online spoilers, OK?
We open in Saint Lucia, where Jake wears a tight shirt and thinks deep thoughts in the surf. "I'm so in love with Tenley and I'm so in love with Vienna for many different reasons," he tells the camera. "Love is what's making this so complicated." Later, Jake goes to meet his family, including mom, dad and various siblings. He asks the fam to help him make his decision. He also describes Vienna as "smart" before telling everyone that she didn't make nice with the other ladies. Mom wonders if Vienna is the girl that all the girls hated. "Sometimes there's something to that, Jake," mom says.
Tenley soon arrives. "I've been very, very careful that it's not the idea of Jake, but that I can actually fall in love with this man," she tells the assembled familial judges. "This is very serious to me." Dad is particularly touched -- and starts to cry (so THAT'S where Jake gets it). Mom has some questions, though. She wants to know if Tenley will get along with her daughters-in-law, because "men don't hold (the family) together as well as women do." Tenley responds by -- wait for it -- mentioning her divorce! Not surprisingly, the two end up crying. The bachelorette then brings up her divorce to Jake's dad. He is so touched that he hugs Tenley. "I think that I probably met my future daughter-in-law today," dad tells the camera. Jake and Tenley then jump into the pool fully clothed and make out. Soon, Jake's brothers join in the fun (swimming -- not making out).
The next day, Vienna prepares to meet the Jakester's family. "I want them to see the Vienna I have fallen in love with," he tells the camera. Vienna quickly confesses to the family that all the other girls in the house hated her. She laughs it off, but the dramatic music and close ups tell the alert viewer that Jake's family doesn't find it so funny. One awkward lunch later, Jake's mom tells the camera that "Vienna isn't connecting that well with the family." Jake regrets telling his family that Vienna fought with the other ladies -- and worries that he might have biased them against the blonde. Inevitably, though, the tide begins to turn. First, Vienna does well with Jake's sisters-in-law -- so much so that one of them begins to cry. Then, Vienna charms mom, who is "no longer concerned with her ability to get along with people." Mom even apologizes for being initially on guard.
Jake has two more dates before he makes his decision, though. The bachelor and Vienna head to a Sulfur spring. Despite the smell, the pair goes swimming -- and is soon smearing each other with mud. "There is such a natural chemistry," he tells the camera. Apparently. Before you can say "parental guidance suggested," the two are rubbing each other down and swapping spit. "I was melting," Vienna coos to the camera. "I just know in my heart that Jake and I are going to be together." Later, Vienna admits to breaking her dad's heart when she once got married for three weeks. She then presents Jake with a promise ring. It's a ladies ring, so we're not sure if Jake will be willing to wear it. Still, he appears touched. They make out and talk so low that subtitles are required. "I'm so scared," says a weeping Vienna. "I don't want to lose him!"
The next morning, Jake welcomes Tenley to a private boat. They troll out into the clear blue for some snorkeling. Later, Jake admits that he is tired, which raises the question of what he was doing up so late the night before. "I am right now extremely confused emotionally," he tells the camera. He then tells Tenley that he feels a very real emotional connection. But physical? Jake isn't so sure. "I think we have heat, but are you not thinking we do?" she asks. Jake says it's building "slowly." Understandably, Tenley is very hurt. "All along I thought our chemistry was unbelievable," she tells the camera. "At this point, I'm not all that confident." Later, Jake arrives at Tenley's bungalow with many apologies. He claims that he never meant to hurt her -- and was just trying to be honest with someone he loves. They retire to the bedroom where Tenley confesses love. They lie on the bed and heavily make out until the camera demurely looks away.
The following morning, Jake takes off his shirt and stands on his deck overlooking beautiful waters. He enjoys -- with the help of gauzy clips -- flashbacks to past dates with both women. "I just have to figure out who has my heart," he tells the camera. And with 30 minutes to go, he better hurry it up. Tenley, meanwhile, dons a skimpy bikini to reminisce about the first man she has kissed since her divorce. Vienna also puts on a bikini (and takes a shower) while extolling the virtues of the Jakester. The bachelor then chooses rings, which only further confuses our oft-shirtless bachelor. He soon begins to cry (which is kind of his "thing") before declaring that his decision has been made.
So we arrive at our final rose ceremony. First, he takes aside Tenley, who is positive that her "new life with Jake begins today." Not so fast, sister. Jake, who immediately begins to weep, loves her "smile and positivity," but says that "something just doesn't feel right." She begins to weep, too. The two cry and hug. "I'm not ready to say goodbye," Tenley squeaks through tears. Gasps a crying Jake: "I'm never going to forget you!" Tenley then thanks the Jakester for "making me feel alive again." Poor Jake looks like he has been punched in the stomach -- by love. Nevertheless, he allows Tenley to walk away.
Now it's time for the happy part -- the part Jake has dreaming about "for 31 years." Host Chris welcomes Vienna to a grassy spot overlooking the water. "Jake is my soul mate," Vienna tells the camera. "But I also realize I could be leaving with my heart broken." Not to worry, sister. "Vienna, I love you," Jake says through tears before dropping to one knee. "Will you marry me?" She says "yes" -- and the two kiss. Cue montage of past happy moments leading to this magical moment!
Naturally, the montage is set to "On the Wings of Love."
