Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV Premiere of Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about directorial ambitions, twisted technology, and why aliens aren’t interested in us.
How did you become attached to Peripheral?
The producer Craig Touhy and I had been friends for a while and we’d nearly done another movie together. He’d liked the claustrophobia and tension of The Seasoning House so we met up to discuss Peripheral. When he pitched it to me, very much a low budget, contained movie, in one apartment. I must say I was a little hesitant. I wanted to broaden my directing and do bigger scope. Craig persuaded me to at least read it. I did and loved the script. The story, the character of Bobbi, of this writer blocked, being forced to adjust to what is wanted of her, and having to succumb to a technology that ultimately fucks...

Ahead of the digital release, on August 3rd, of his latest film Peripheral, director Paul Hyett talks about the importance of creative freedom, the lockdown and future projects…
Peripheral is your fourth feature as director. When you started on The Seasoning House back in 2011, did you ever imagine your career would be this successful?
Back when I decided I wanted to make my own movie I had my prosthetics company and was doing very well, but I really wanted to tell my own stories. I said to myself, get The Seasoning House made, see if it’s any good. If it’s a success then I would close my workshop and concentrate on directing. When it was selected as opening film for FrightFest 2012, I was elated and decided to go that path. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have directed four films and never would have thought that would happen.

Paul Hyett’s debut movie The Seasoning House blew me away. With its hard-hitting story and an incredible performance from Rosie Day, It was one of my favourite films of 2013. He followed it up with something completely different, the highly entertaining werewolf movie set on a train Howl, so I was now very much looking forward to checking out Peripheral.
Peripheral is once again, completely different from the directors other movies. This time more sci-fi but still entering into body horror territory. We follow Bobbi Johnson whose debut novel has become a huge hit but also sparked riots across England. Now struggling with her second novel, a stalker and trying to stay off drugs, her publishing company give her a new computer and editing software that...

There seems to be endless low budget horror with titles like the one above (and I have watched many!). ‘The Curse of…’ or ‘The Haunting of…’ and it’s always 50/50 on the quality so I generally go in with low expectations.
I will say right off the bat that The Curse of Buckout Road exceeded those expectations. Buckout Road is ‘the most haunted road in America’ and the movie covers some of the myths, legends, ghosts and folklore that apparently haunt the road. There’s plenty on show and I’m sure plenty more if they were needed for a sequel. A group of young people start to think that these myths might...

The first crazy trailer has been released for a new artificial intelligence sci-fi horror thriller called Peripheral. The film comes from director Paul Hyett, who directed The Seasoning House, Howl and Heretiks.
The story centers around a writer who installs an artificial intelligence editing software in her home to help her finish a novel, but as you’ll see, things take a dark and sinister turn when the AI starts to manipulate her and control her. Here’s the synopsis:
Bobbi Johnson is a young literary sensation facing her difficult second novel. Already dealing with a crazed stalker and her junkie ex-boyfriend, Bobbi is convinced by her publisher to use new smart editing software and finds herself going head-to-head with an artificial intelligence determined to write her book for her. "Finish the book, Bobbi!" Amp International has unveiled a teaser trailer for a wickedly weird sci-fi horror thriller titled Peripheral, from director Paul Hyett. The film is about a young writer named Bobbi Johnson struggling to finish her second novel. She installs an artificial intelligence into her home to help her finish, but it takes over her mind and manipulates her work to suit its own nefarious ends. Hannah Arterton stars as Bobbi, along with a smaller cast including Tom Conti, Rosie Day, Jenny Seagrove, and Elliot James Langridge. I honestly don't even know what to make of this - there's so many weird things happening and so much funky imagery in this trailer it's hard to make sense of it. But I guess I will admit: I am curious about this. A little bit, perhaps? Have a look for yourself. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Paul Hyett's Peripheral,...

Buckout Road is an upcoming indie horror feature. From first time director Matthew Currie Holmes, the film is a throwback to classic good vs. evil horror films of the '80s. In the film, several college students realize that the urban legends, on Buckout Road, are true. This title stars Dominique Provost-Chalkley (The Seasoning House, 2012), Danny Glover, Michelle Mylette and many others. A trailer was released earlier this year. Now, a couple of upcoming film festival dates have been announced. The trailer is a good one. It flashes back and forth across timelines as characters discover the area's haunted past. The clip also blends the religious with the supernatural, in this chilling clip. Buckout Road will have a couple of showings, in October. The next showing takes place on October 7th, in Nashville, Tennessee. Then, there will be another showing, in Toronto, on October 13th. This showing takes place as...

Paul Hyett, director of Howl and The Seasoning House, has begun principal photography on the chilling supernatural horror film Heretiks for Templeheart Films, EnMar Productions, Red Rock Entertainment and Sterling Pictures.
Set during the 17th Century, Heretiks sees a young woman saved from execution and led to a priory to repent her sins… but discovers a greater evil lies within. Michael Ironside (Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Scanners), three-time Olivier winner Clare Higgins (Hellraiser, Hellbound, The Golden Compass) and Hannah Arterton (Walking On Sunshine) star in this atmospheric horror/chiller currently shooting in Wales.
Says director and co-writer Paul Hyett:

Andrew Gower (“The Village”) has been cast as Prince Charles Edward Stuart in the upcoming second season of Starz's historical, time-traveling romance series "Outlander".
The new season will be based on Diana Gabaldon's second novel in the series, "Dragonfly in Amber". In this version, Stuart is the young heir to the exiled Catholic royal dynasty and is plotting his return to the throne with the help of his Jacobite supporters. With an unabashed taste for alcohol and women, Charles Stuart is hell-bent on glory.
Also joining the cast this year is Robert Cavanah ("Wuthering Heights") as Jamie’s Scottish wine merchant cousin who lives in Paris, Romann Berrux ("Detectives") as a young French pickpocket fiercely loyal to the Frasers, Dominique Pinon as the apothecary Master Raymond, Stanley Weber ("Borgia") as French Court member Le Comte St. Germain, and Rosie Day ("The Seasoning House") as Silas Hawkins' niece and...

The first trailer for Howl shows most of the film. From character transformations, creature effects and plotlines, almost everything is available to see in the clip. Almost a short film, itself, Howl reveals too much, leaving the mystery by the sidelines. Still, the clip shows expert make-up and CGI effects, from long-time make-up director Paul Hyett (The Descent). As well, the film stars Rosie Day (The Seasoning House), Ryan Oliva, Sam Gittins and Ed Speleers. The very revealing trailer for Howl is hosted here. The story is straightforward. A commuter train is waylayed, during a full moon. The conductor disappears and several passengers are frightened by sounds in the woods. A creature emerges from the dark. And now, everyone inside is being targeted by a seven foot tall werewolf. This stop will likely be their last! There are no release plans for the film. Though, this title was shot in the United Kingdom.

The noughties had Snakes On A Plane, now this decade brings you Werewolves On A Train. The first trailer for Paul Hyett’s Howl has been released and we can reveal it to you exclusively below. More blood less Beatnik, this is not to be confused with the Allen Ginsberg biopic of the same name. This Howl is your average commuter nightmare: train delayed, obstruction on the line, night falls, full moon, werewolves arrive, bloody carnage ensues. And if that doesn’t warrant a partial travelcard refund we don’t know what does. brightcove.createExperiences();Directed by Paul Hyett (who cut his teeth doing effects work on films like of Neil Marshall's The Descent and Doomsday before making his directorial debut with 2012 revenge horror The Seasoning House) the film stars Ed Speleers as a ticket inspector dealing with some unusually hirsute fare-dodgers and co-stars Sean Pertwee and Shauna Macdonald.

The history of a haunted house, from the 19th century to today, will be explored in spooky fashion in the British anthology film Its Walls Were Blood. Steve Oram (Sightseers), Edward Hogg (Anonymous), and Polly McIntosh (White Settlers) have all joined the cast, per Screen Daily. Oram (pictured) was exquisitely good in Sightseers, and McIntosh brings beauty, grace, and feral intensity to her roles, so, yes, this is good news for the anthology flick. Individual segments will be directed by Sean Hogan (The Devil's Business), Paul Hyett (The Seasoning House), Tom Shankland (The Children) and Paul Davis (The Body). Of those filmmakers, I'm most familiar with Hogan, who has consistently plowed a fiercely independent, often uncomfortable path in his work, which includes the haunting Lie Still, and a nicely...

A few months back we received news that director Paul Hyett would be following up his engaging and brutal thriller 'The Seasoning House' with werewolf based horror 'Howl'. Soulmate, her feature directorial debut, stars Anna Walton (who previously worked with Carolyn on The Halloween Kid and will be a familiar face in to genre fans, having appeared in Hellboy 2 in 2008 and The Seasoning House in 2012) and sees a woman, Audrey, retreat to a remote country cottage after attempting to commit suicide due to the sudden death of her husband.
