Different, slower, no special effects and yet an intriguing movie
4TH2 February 2012
A grieving artist is immersed in her art, memories and culture of her people. Her step-children are a bit annoying but we don't have to spend much time with them. Her boyfriend is patient and we're not sure why, yet we even that is explained as we get to know her. At first there is no life in her and you wonder if the movie is going to be worth it but as she comes to life she becomes enjoyable and someone you might want to know. It could be tedious but the blend of history, music, culture and painting is intriguing. Perhaps the break from explosions and the graphic special effects has its own charm. Whatever the reason, I enjoyed this unique story and was glad to have spent the time.

A very sad story.

Warning: Spoilers
After watching this film, I cried towards the end when Mavis began crying when she and Jessie stopped off at Josephine's place. This turned out to be a sad film for me due to the sad memories Mavis experienced. But I loved how those warriors came lurking from the past and into the forests in front of Mavis and Jessie. They just sat there in their vehicle when all of a sudden Mohawk warriors walked in front of them! They were probably spooked but also intrigued! I like how Mavis went to look for them after they passed in front of them. Jessie then got out of the car to help but he said that the warriors were "lost". I think that those warriors walked out in front of them for the reason that they were trying to tell them both something important. I don't know what exactly but those were the most cool scenes. Whenever a group of warriors came walking in the forest and into view, I found that to be utmost cool. Anyways.. all in all, this film earned an 8 out of 10.

A Gem

I loved this story, and the characters. The acting was believable, convincing, and touching... I was pulled in, and didn't want to miss a bit of it. Every word had weight, as much as the unspoken imagery which followed along on the journey. I loved the warriors, Josephine, and Mavis. "Bug" displayed patience only attained through love, which made me happy that Mavis chose to not be one of the Lightning women who grew old alone. The music was special. It was haunting and beautiful, fitting the scenes perfectly. I cried at the end, with happiness. It was a gem of a movie that I stumbled upon by 'accident' - and maybe something I needed - so maybe not by 'accident' after all. Would gladly watch it again. Well worth my time on a Sunday evening, and it was so poignant, I won't forget it anytime soon.
