“If something’s not representing you, you just have to change it,” queer filmmaker Silas Howard told IndieWire last month. “Because no one else is going to care enough to do it for you.”
That’s exactly what “BearCity” writer/director Doug Langway did when it came to addressing the dearth of movies about his community: Bears. A passionate niche within gay male circles, a bear, for the uninitiated, is an affectionate term for “the bigger, hairier guy,” as Langway put it. With only one feature under his belt from 1996 (“Raising Heroes”), Langway initially set to work on a script that would encompass all the colors of the bear rainbow.
Seven years and three movies later, the “BearCity” trilogy is the biggest gay movie franchise you’ve probably never heard of. It’s also a triumph of a grassroots independent filmmaking model that has all but disappeared.

The 14th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival is, once again, packed to the gills with worldwide wonderful, weird and revelatory filmmaking. The fest runs this year on July 14-24.
The highlight of the festival is the once-in-a-lifetime live performance of Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then, which will be performed on July 17 at 7:15 p.m. American animator Brent Green will be traveling Down Under to provide the live musical score and narration for his emotional, live-action animated tale about undying love and creation. He will also be accompanied by band mates and foley artists, Mike McGinley, John Swartz, Donna K and Drew Henkles.
Some other films to look out for at the fest will be the Australian premiere of Zach Clark‘s terminally twisted Vacation!, a black comedy about four girls on a debauched weekend of drinking and drugging that ends horribly for all involved; Marie Losier’s acclaimed...

Plus Kevin Alejandro cheats on Lafayette, Nicholas Rodriguez goes to Oklahoma!, and why Jake Shears doesn't wear a lobster as a hat.
Actors Peter Kwong, Conrad Bachmann, Bryan Cranston, Kyra Sedwick, Aaron Paul, Kathryn Joosten, Julia Ormond, Fred Willard, Brenda Vaccaro and Chris Colfer
Above you can see Chris Colfer doing good deeds by visiting a retirement home. Seriously, he was at the Performers Peer Group Reception for the Emmy Awards, but I couldn't stop singing "One of these things is not like the others." This morning Ryan Murphy told listeners of Ryan Seacrest's radio program that Britney Spears will be appearing in the episode of Glee that uses her music, which makes more sense than her appearing in a episode that uses Michael Jackson's music, which Ryan Murphy says he doesn't think he can license, as much as he wants to. So the Super Bowl episode will...

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with musician Bob Mould during the SXSW Film Festival to discuss his part in Malcolm Ingram’s latest documentary Bear Nation, a film that chronicles a rather unique sub-culture within the gay community. From fronting the iconic punk trio Hüsker Dü, to the alternative sounds of Sugar, and over a decade of solo work (check out The Last Dog & Pony Show), Bob Mould has created a unique stamp on rock music that is still going strong. Below is my brief but enlightening chat with Bob. DS: How did you get involved in Bear Nation and how did you meet Malcolm Ingram? Bm: If I remember correctly, the folks at Art & Crafts Records in Toronto, who I think might be putting out the soundtrack, got in touch with my management company in San Francisco and said that Malcolm’s making this movie called...

Malcolm Ingram is a documentary filmmaker who previously directed Small Town Gay Bar. His new film, Bear Nation, was such a nice look at the Bear community, and what Malcolm sees as its upsides and downsides. Malcolm himself is a Bear, and although he may not be in the film at all, he is very much the backbone.

Director: Malcolm Ingram Featuring: Bob Mould and Kevin Smith Somewhat of a follow up to Small Town Gay Bar, Malcolm Ingram takes us inside the world of Bear Nation, a sub-culture within the gay community. These large, hairy, gay men have created a little slice of heaven for themselves, complete with magazines and conventions dedicated to their girthy physique and cuddly personalities. In addition, Ingram touches upon the prejudice that still permeates society concerning gay culture, and the misconceptions straight folks have concerning the gay community. Bear Nation has many hilarious moments, with Ingram interviewing a slew of bears who touch upon their experiences, including how they began traveling down the road to bear worship. Said bears also make it a point to separate themselves from others in gay society, particularly “Twinks,” another sub-culture characterized by pronounced feminine qualities and a lack of body hair. In addition, there are a...

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.
