What did five of the most critically acclaimed Asian movies that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have in common? They all were edited by rising Taiwanese studio Cutting Edge Films.
Formally established only in 2022, the company comprises a small group of film professionals who have worked together for over a decade. They are co-led by French editor Matthieu Laclau (Touch of Sin), known for his long-running collaboration with Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke, and Taiwanese producer Justine O. (The Chinese Mayor, Black Dog), whose work has nabbed a succession of festival prizes in recent years. The company says its recent successes point to the maturity and expanding reach of Taipei’s post-production sector, which has been buoyed by steady government support and a growing reputation for high-quality work at globally competitive prices.
“Taipei’s post-production scene is definitely having a moment,” says Laclau. “For VFX, editing or color grading,...

Mohaan Nadaar’s The Production Headquarters Limited, one of the producers of Cannes-prizewinning film “The Shameless,” has boarded Indian documentary “Legend of Abbakka.”
“The Shameless” was directed by Bulgarian-American filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov and appeared in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival this year. There, Anasuya Sengupta won the best actress award.
Rani Abbakka of Ullal, southern India, a 16th-century warrior-queen, defied the Portuguese Empire, a feat often overlooked in history books. Documentary, “Legend of Abbakka” aims to bring her story to light, using the Yakshagana and Bhuta Kola folk-theater traditions of coastal Karnataka, where Abbakka’s valor is legendary. Ruling over a diverse population, Abbakka united her subjects against foreign invaders and is known for divorcing her treacherous husband. Abbakka’s victories secured a century of peace before European colonization. Since 2001, the Rani Abbakka festival has united Ullal, ending communal strife and honoring her legacy.

As a “foreigner” Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov takes on a challenging task with The Shameless, shooting in a foreign language (Hindi), a foreign country (India) and, as a male, dealing with a predominantly female-centric subject.
He started with the idea of making it as documentary but quickly abandoned the notion and concentrated instead on the story of Renuka, who escapes from a Delhi brothel after killing a policeman and seeks refuge in a community of sex workers in a small town in northern India. There she develops a forbidden lesbian romance with Devika, a young girl who has been condemned to what will be a life of prostitution.
The two women at the core of the narrative could not be more different: the older Renuka (a remarkable and award-winning performance from Anasuya Senguypta) emerges as hardened and ambitious while the younger Devika (Omara Shetty) is well contrasted as disillusioned and pliable with.

Cannes 2024 was a life-changing journey for Indian production designer-turned actor Anasuya Sengupta who won best actress at the festival’s Un Certain Regard strand for “The Shameless.”
Sengupta made her acting debut alongside several of her friends in Anjan Dutt’s music-themed “Madly Bangali” (2009) and served as director’s assistant to Claire McCarthy in Australian production “The Waiting City” the same year. Kolkata native, Sengupta then moved to Mumbai, home to the vast Bollywood industry. She wasn’t impressed by Bollywood and became a noted production designer and artist instead. Her credits in that field include Netflix’s “Selection Day” and “Ray” and feature films “Chippa” and “Good Morning Sunshine.” Acting stayed alive in the shape of the occasional commercial or short film.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival was officially closed yesterday, on May 25, 2024, as the prizes for the movies and the actors were awarded at the closing ceremony. It was a very exciting and content-filled event, and we have also reported on numerous movies that had their premiere at Cannes, some of which were received well, while others… not so much. But, naturally, everyone wants to know who won and who lost at Cannes, and that is what we are going to report about in this article.
The article will be divided into two main sections. The first one will list all the juries at Cannes, since they are the ones who chose the winners at the film festival, so we think that it is only fair that you know who picked the winners. After that, we are going to list all the winners in each of the categories.

Exactly ten years after the genre-mixing, canine-driven Hungarian thriller “White God” landed the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, this year’s ceremony culminated in the same prize going to a somewhat corresponding title: Chinese director Guan Hu’s “Black Dog,” a fusion of western, film noir and offbeat comedy with a highly lovable mutt at its center. The film, about a damaged loner returning to his desert hometown after a spell in prison and finding a kindred spirit in an equally world-weary greyhound, beat 17 other titles to take the top prize in the festival’s second-most prestigious competitive section. (The festival’s Official Competition awards will be handed out tomorrow night.)
Jury president Xavier Dolan, the actor-auteur behind such films as “Mommy” and “Laurence Anyways,” commended Guan’s film for “its breathtaking poetry, its imagination, its precision [and] its masterful direction.” He echoed the enthusiasm of Variety critic Jessica Kiang,...

Anita Gou is no stranger to the festival circuit. Her L.A.-based Kindred Spirit banner saw a raft of its first projects debut at Sundance but, more recently, her co-production Silent Twins was selected in Un Certain Regard in 2022, while Dominic Savage’s Close To You premiered in Toronto last year. The company’s Mubi-acquired doc The Last Year of Darkness, which explores the lives of alternative Chinese youth, was awarded a Special Mention prize in the Next:Wave section at the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival last year.
This year, the producer, who has roots in Taiwan, was back in Cannes with Locust, the debut feature from Taiwanese-American filmmaker Keff, which played in Cannes Critics’ Week. The project is set during the 2019 Hong Kong protests and follows Zhong-Han,...

Haha…Arri learned from us and created a camera chart of the Arri cameras that were used to shoot Cannes 2024 films. According to the chart, the new Alexa 35 is booming. In the 2nd place is the Mini Lf, and the 3rd belongs to the good and old Alexa Mini.
Arri Alexa 35. The winner of Cannes 2024? Arri cameras at Cannes 2024
As the tradition continues, Arri cameras are preferred among Cannes filmmakers. For instance, the Alexa Mini and Mini Lf were the chosen cameras by the Cannes 2023 cinematographers. It appears that in Cannes 2024 there’s no difference besides the rise of the newest Alexa, which is the 35. Arri felt inspired by Y.M.Cinema charts and released its own Cannes 2024 camera chart focusing on Arri cameras. According to Arri’s chart, the Alexa 35 is in the first place as the weapon of choice of Cannes 2024 cinematographers. After that, there are the Mini Lf,...

Unspooling May 18 as part of an overall Swiss Focus at the Marché du Film, Solothurn Film Festival Goes to Cannes marks the first collaboration between the long-standing Swiss festival and the Cannes market, but also a first for many of the talents and producers carefully picked for the event.
Two of Switzerland’s top documentary filmmakers Jacqueline Zünd, winner of a 2019 Crystal Bear nominated for “Where We Belong,” and Nicholas Steiner, director of “Above & Below”, ranked among Variety reviewer Peter Debruge’s Top 10 films of 2015, are set to attract buyers, sales agents and programmers’ attention with their star-stubbed fiction debuts.
In “Do You Believe in Angels, Mr Drowak,” Steiner has hired Karl Markovics, star of the 2008 Oscar winner “The Counterfeiters”, rising acting talent Lune Wedler, Lars Eidinger and Dominique Pinon.

Bulgarian-American filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov’s Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard selection “The Shameless” has taken 14 years to come to fruition.
Bojanov previously directed the documentary “Invisible” (2005), followed by his Cannes-debuting fiction feature debut “Avé” (2011). Post “Avé” and prior to his 2017 Rotterdam selection “Light Thereafter,” which starred Barry Keoghan and Kim Bodnia, Bojanov acquired the rights to William Dalrymple’s 2009 book, “Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India.” The idea at the time was to make a documentary cross referencing four different stories from the book, including one of a sex worker in Karnataka, southern India.
Bojanov scoured India to find real stories similar to the ones in the book and in 2014 he started filming in Karnataka, with a view to using the footage to attract finance for a feature-length documentary. During his research, the filmmaker also came across a young girl growing up in a family...

A radical vision of Indian womanhood collides with scattered storytelling in director Konstantin Bojanov’s “The Shameless,” a provocative queer drama laid low by its oblique narrative. Following two women destined for a life of sex work, the drama is lucid in its politics, but often opaque in its drama — a dynamic embodied by two wildly different lead performances.
Anasuya Sengupta is remarkable as “Renuka,” a Muslim woman who dons the moniker of a Hindu goddess while on the run from police. When “The Shameless” begins, her crime of killing a policeman is already in her rearview, forcing her to take refuge in a small-town brothel in Northern India. While in hiding, she meets Devika (Omara Shetty), a young, meek wannabe rapper whose enigmatic grandmother (Mita Vasisht) is a revered holy woman. Devika’s stern mother (Auroshika Dey) has condemned her to an eventual life of religiously-inspired devadasi sex work,...

Switzerland is set to take center stage at the 2024 Cannes Film Market, with the Alpine nation picked as this year’s country of honor at the Marché du Film, which runs May 14-22 alongside the Cannes Film Festival.
National film promotion group Swiss Films, together with the Swiss Federal Office of Culture and Swiss public broadcaster Srg Ssr, will host a series of events highlighting Switzerland’s cinema culture and the opportunities the country offers for international producers. Switzerland will also host the opening night market party on May 15 (fingers crossed they’re serving fondue).
In addition to the Swiss productions and co-productions screening at this year’s festival — which include Konstantin Bojanov’s The Shameless and Laetitia Dosch’s Who Let the Dog Bite? in Un Certain Regard and Elena López Riera’s short film Las Novias Del Sur in Critics’ Week — Swiss-made productions will be highlighted across the Marché’s 2024 program.

Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump drama The Apprentice, Anora, the latest from The Florida Project and Red Rocket director Sean Baker, and Andrea Arnold’s Bird, starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski, are among the highlights of this year’s Cannes Film Festival competition.
Abbasi, the Iran-born, Sweden-based director, whose Holy Spider was a sensation of the 2022 Cannes festival, returns with his story of how a young Donald Trump and the notorious lawyer Roy Cohn built up Trump’s real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 1980s. Sebastian Stan stars as Trump, Succession‘s Jeremy Strong plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) is wife Ivana.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things follow-up Kinds of Kindness will also premiere in the Cannes competition. The film, featuring the Oscar-winning Poor Things star Emma Stone, will be high on every Cannes attendee’s must-see list. The Greek auteur has again...
