Production began one week before actor Drew Logsdon was to move to Kentucky. The film was dedicated to his departure.
The entire Wal-Mart sequence is a very loose retelling of Homer's The Odyssey. Wendy's represents the many-headed monster Scylla, and Chili's represents the whirlpool Charybdis. Paulie the rent-a-cop represents the cyclops Polyphemus. Earl represents the blind prophet Tiresias. The ringing phone represents the Sirens.
The route that Hal and Stan take in the film is the geographically correct way to walk from Director Tyler Nisbet's house at the beginning, to writer/actor Dylan Zelker's house, through the two shopping centers shown, and finally ending up in the field behind actor Drew Logsdon house.
The Field used in the film has since been paved over and now has a road going right through it, much like the film predicted.
