The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

Spoilers for the series finale of Devil in Ohio ahead.
Devil in Ohio ends with a shocking revelation: Mae Dodd (Madeleine Arthur), the teenage cult escapee sheltered by psychiatrist Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel), has been hiding a big secret. Far from being dragged back to her cult against her will during the Harvest Dance, Mae orchestrated the whole thing, going as far as stealing her date’s car to get herself there. In other words, it was Mae who set in motion the events leading to her mother’s death and the devastation of Suzanne’s family. Why would Mae do all this? So that she could be exactly where she wants: alone with Suzanne.
Viewers learn all this when Suzanne gets a phone call from Detective Lopez (Gerardo Celasco), who has finally pieced together the evidence and tells her what actually happened. Shaken, Suzanne returns to the table, trying...

The grind is as real as it gets when you're working on network television. Where an intense film shoot can require 12 to 16-hour days for several months, a TV show demands the same daily time commitment year in and year out. Even decades of back-breaking work in action movies couldn't prepare Sylvester Stallone for the "brutal" reality of making a television series when he starred in Taylor Sheridan's mafia drama "Tulsa King."
You can imagine, then, that Emily Deschanel was more than ready for a break after a decade-plus of playing crime-solving forensics expert Temperance Brennan on "Bones." Hart Hanson's procedural was the rare series to survive the gauntlet that was Fox in the 2000s, ultimately spanning 12 seasons, 246 episodes, three U.S. presidential administrations, and a confusing-but-amusing crossover with "Sleepy Hollow." "Bones" ran for so long that it only ended a year before Deschanel's sister, Zooey Deschanel, finished...

Crime procedurals can be brutal. While actors on shows like "Criminal Minds" and "Law & Order: Svu" might brace themselves to play characters who deal with the unthinkable, the nasty and upsetting details of shows like these can still sometimes get to the people who embody the detectives fans love. Just ask Emily Deschanel: in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Deschanel revealed that one early episode of the show "Bones" impacted her so much that she ended up bawling on film -- a sharp contrast to her matter-of-fact character's non-reactions.
"I remember the first season doing takes where there [were] some things that were super upsetting," Deschanel told THR in 2019. "I remember there was an episode about a girl in foster care and my character was supposed to be in foster care, and I was just bawling crying." Her character, Dr. Temperance Brennan, had her own tragic backstory in...

Emily Deschanel, Sam Trammell and Noma Dumezweni lead “ReEntry,” the first film from the production company PlotNaut, helmed by filmmakers Brendan Choisnet and Daniel Nayeri.
The sci-fi romance stars Deschanel as Elenore, a woman grappling the disappearance of her husband (Trammell), after he enlists in a scientific experiment run by Dumezweni’s character. Djouliet Amara never thought she would become an actor. That wasn’t really part of the plan. But three years into her acting career, the Winnipeg, Ontario native finds herself as a regular on a series (the quirky comedy/sci-fi/mystery “The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+) that’s already been renewed for a second season. And she’s drawing raves for her work, with one critic calling her “a real revelation.” “It’s strange to think I get to play pretend all day and get paid for it. That’s really what it feels like. I’ve followed what my heart has told me to do, and the universe has kind of rewarded me. It’s honestly such a blessing.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Apple TV+”s The Big Door Prize comes armed with a deceptively simple elevator pitch. Based on a book of the same name by M.O. Walsh, this 10 episode series ponders “if a nondescript machine in a corner store promised to tell you your ultimate destiny, would you want to know it?”
At first, you might be thinking “sure, why not?” That concept is not markedly different from what a psychic or boardwalk fortune teller might guarantee. And in the case of the butterfly-branded “Morpho machine,” receiving your reading would actually be far cheaper at only $2. It’s all just fun and games, now who has four quarters?
But what if seemingly everyone in your small American town who utilized the Morpho machine appeared to be fundamentally changed by the experience? What if dozens of your peers completely rearranged the details of their lives to better fit its ultimate vision for them?...

Lilah Fitzgerald has signed on to join AMC’s “Lucky Hank” in a guest role.
Formerly titled “Straight Man,” the eight-episode dramedy follows William Henry “Hank” Devereaux Jr. (Bob Odenkirk), an unlikely chairman in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Just as Hank’s career and home life begins to unravel, his wife Lily (Mirielle Enos) also decides to take a look at some of her past choices that led to her current reality. Based on the novel by Richard Russo, the series is told in first person from Hank’s point of view.
The “Monster High” alum will play one of the students at the school with a special interest in starting an organization to “avert mediocrity.” However, she seems to have some underlying ulterior motives.
Other previously announced cast members include Alvina August, Sara Amini, Diedrich Bader, Suzanne Cryer, Olivia Scott Welch, Arthur Keng and Cedric Yarbrough.

Madeleine Arthur grew up going to the Blockbuster in her neighborhood; it was walking distance from her house in Vancouver. "I remember specifically the layout of where the new releases were," the actor tells Popsugar. "They were on the right side of the store."
Of course, her hometown Blockbuster is gone - it's a vintage clothing store these days. But she still remembers her family's frequent trips. "I loved going," the 25-year-old says. "I feel like it's what sparked my love for movies, going to pick out movies every week."
So it's fitting that Arthur is now a cast member of Netflix's "Blockbuster," a nostalgic series following the employees at the last Blockbuster in the world. The show is "a celebration of movies, and it's about rekindling human connection in this digital world," she says.

“Cobra Kai” has taken the championship belt on Nielsen’s streaming chart upon the release of its fifth season on Sept. 9. During the week of Sept. 5 through 11, Netflix’s continuation of the “Karate Kid” film franchise led the Overall and Original streaming programs list with 1.7 billion viewing minutes.
On the Original list, “Cobra Kai” was closely followed by streaming counterpart “Devil in Ohio,” a Netflix limited thriller series starring Emily Deschanel, and Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Both shows topped a billion viewing minutes, with a tally of roughly 1.4 and 1.2 each.
“Stranger Things,” which occupied the fourth slot on that list, saw a huge drop off to about half of those numbers, with nearly 600 million viewing minutes. Disney+’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” garnered 493 million viewing minutes.

Cobra Kai topped the Nielsen streaming chart for the week of September 5-11, as titles from four competing streaming services surpassed 1 billion minutes of viewing in a first.
The fifth season of Netflix’s Karate Kid reboot drew more than 1.7 billion minutes of streaming from 50 available episodes. Sony Pictures Television’s series started out as a YouTube Original before shifting to Netflix. Despite the nostalgic Gen X center of the audience, about 20 of viewers are between 18 and 34 years old, with another 35 between 35 and 49, Nielsen said.
Thor: Love and Thunder, making its debut as a no-extra-charge movie title on Disney+, collected 1.5 billion streaming minutes. Released last July, the Marvel outing grossed more than 760 million worldwide despite being overshadowed by other summer fare like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion. “Cobra Kai” had an explosive debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, racking up 1.7 billion minutes viewed between its Netflix premiere on Sept. 9 and the end of the viewing window on Sept. 11. It’s a significant feat not only because of the series’ ample bump past the one billion mark, but because it achieved that number in what ultimately became a historic week streaming.
Nielsen’s Sept. 5-11 viewing window marked the first time four different streaming platforms have crossed 1 billion minutes viewed. If you had told me as a child that some of the biggest TV shows of 2022 would be two massively budgeted fantasy series, I wouldn’t have believed it. The Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon debuted on HBO a little over a month ago, followed by The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video on September 1st, but how are the shows doing in the ratings department?
Nielsen has released their SVOD charts for the top streaming series for August 29-September 4, and wouldn’t you know it, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has come out on top. The series took the number one spot with 1.25 billion minutes viewed, leaving House of the Dragon in the dust with 781 million minutes viewed. In the first head-to-head showdown for two big-budget fantasy series on Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart, Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power got the edge over HBO Max’s House of the Dragon.
For the week of August 29-September 4, the first two episodes of Lotr rang up 1.25 billion minutes of streaming, compared with 781 million for Dragon, which finished fifth for the week.

A major caveat, however: The Nielsen numbers track only viewing via a TV set through HBO Max, so linear HBO as well as multiplex viewing and on-demand orders are not counted. HBO has said that its Game of Thrones prequel has been averaging 29 million viewers across all platforms thus far in its run.

The big-budget The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had a big opening weekend on Nielsen’s SVOD charts, outdrawing House of the Dragon among streaming users. It was not, however, the biggest opening ever for Amazon’s Prime Video in terms of total viewing time.
The Rings of Power captured 1.25 billion minutes of viewing time following its Sept. 1 premiere in the U.S., the only streaming title to top a billion minutes for the week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, meanwhile, ticked up week-to-week with 781 million minutes on HBO Max (the latter’s total doesn’t include viewing on HBO’s linear channels, which accounts for a significant portion of its overall audience).

In this weekly data series powered by Parrot Analytics we look at the top breakout shows of the past week. Breakout shows are the most in-demand series that have premiered in the past 100 days.
While demand for HBO’s “House of the Dragon” has risen this week, demand for Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” fell by 13, according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.
Another week like this and the “Game of Thrones” prequel will have twice the demand of “The Rings of Power.” If the trajectories of these two shows remain on this path, it’s looking like HBO will have won the much-anticipated faceoff without there being much of a fight at all.

It’s back then, and it’s probably just as well. Such is the comforting power of The Great British Bake Off (Channel 4); it seems unthinkable it would have been cancelled or postponed merely because the Queen had passed on. Indeed, that very fact, and the emotional trauma it has inflicted on a nation and a Commonwealth of about 2.5 billion people, makes it imperative that judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood and their sweetly charming contestants get the mixing bowl out to salve the collective hurt.

“The Crown” is back in power. Following the Thursday passing of Queen Elizabeth II, drama series “The Crown” returned to Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV list.
Season 1 of “The Crown” drew 17.57 million hours viewed for the week of September 5-11, according to Netflix, good enough for seventh place. That viewership tally pretty much just counts Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
It is interesting to note here that while the series itself is back on the list, this is the first appearance for Season 1; the show’s initial season predates the existence of Netflix’s publicly-shared Top 10 lists.
“Cobra Kai” season 5 was number one for the week of September 5-11 with 106.70 million hours viewed. The “Karate Kid” sequel series was only available for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Limited series “Devil in Ohio” was second with 70.81 million hours viewed. There was a steep drop off from there.

There are few things of which Britain is a world-leading exporter these days. Marmalade, perhaps, or nostalgia. But above all else, this country is incontrovertibly the market’s premier provider of wildlife documentaries, from Blue Planet to Planet Earth, Dynasties to The Hunt. Now, the BBC is back with its latest colossal undertaking, Frozen Planet II, a five-episode series sifting through the snow and peering beneath the ice sheets of our vast glacial landscapes.
This new series opens with its narrator, Sir David Attenborough, speaking on camera about the urgency of its themes. It’s an alarming start: not just because of the perils of climate change, but because I’m so used to Attenborough being a disembodied voice. The point of portraying these frozen wastelands, he announces, is “to witness their wonders, while there is still time to save them”. It is a theme that will recur throughout the episode,...

Netflix’s new thriller series Devil in Ohio has shot to the top of its TV rankings.
The series, which is inspired loosely by true events, as well as Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel of the same name, debuted on the streaming service earlier this month.
Starring Emily Deschanel, Madeleine Arthur and Sam Jaeger, Devil in Ohio focuses on the investigation surrounding a satanic cult in rural Ohio.
In a three-star review for The Independent, Annabel Nugent wrote: “In lesser shows, dipping into the past is a clunky distraction from the action at hand, but the flashbacks of Devil in Ohio are welcome moments that pull back the veil on the mystery at pace and for once actually deliver on the darkness promised by a show’s premise.

The success of monster hits such as Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular series ever, as well as Money Heist, All of Us Are Dead, Elite and Lupin, has proven that there is no language barrier for non-English-language series to become global phenoms.
There has been more evidence of that over the last couple of weeks. After the latest Korean breakout, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, edged The Sandman to log the most viewed hours for any series — English or non-English language — for the week of Aug. 15, this past week two non-English-language show, Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Mexican drama High Heat, were the most watched Netflix series around the world with 48.8 million and 44.1 million hours viewed, respectively.
Top English-language performer, mystery limited series Echoes, starring Michelle Monaghan, came in third overall with 36.6M hours viewed.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo extended its impressive streak at the top of the non-English language Netflix weekly rankings.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for all of Devil in Ohio.] Netflix’s new limited series thriller ends on a very unsettling note, which is what makes it so good. In Devil in Ohio, hospital psychiatrist Suzanne (Emily Deschanel) brings a cult escapee, Mae (Madeleine Arthur), into her home. The rest of her family is less than pleased, especially as the cult want her back and the teen exhibits strange behavior. By series’ end, Suzanne and her husband Peter (Sam Jaeger) are separated, and he’s living with the kids. Suzanne is with Mae… but learns, in the final moments, that the teen staged her own kidnapping and had willingly returned to the cult. (The psychiatrist rescued her.) Daria Polatin, who wrote the book inspired by a true story and serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the limited series, breaks down that ending and addresses if there will be a second season after that cliffhanger. That...

A hospital psychiatrist, Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) takes in a mysterious, traumatized teen patient, Mae (Madeleine Arthur), in Devil in Ohio, Netflix‘s new suspense thriller based on the novel by Daria Polatin. Mae wants to assimilate with the Mathis family, including Suzanne’s three daughters, but she’s also trying to hide things from her past. “You’ll see there’s twists and turns with what Mae does because of her trauma. This whole thing plays with trust, suspicion, what’s good, what’s bad, what’s evil,” Deschanel says. As for the “devil” of the title? “We dive into Mae’s background, which is pretty scary — her community, where she comes from. We don’t have to be scared of many supernatural things here — it’s human beings who are the scary entity in this show but there’s an element of devil worship,” Deschanel says. “Mae just...

“The lessons of the fire, as we reach for something higher,” a voice wails as images of flying crows and blood dripping down a rose’s thorny stem flood the screen. “With eyes we’ve all come to know, he’s the devil in Ohio.”
This theme song has a self-conscious ludicrousness that’s ultimately earned by the series it introduces — at least in one sense. Netflix’s “Devil in Ohio” isn’t so great that its missteps end up making sense, but it’s so schlockily unembarrassed by its excesses and its shortcomings alike that it feels difficult to critique.
Here, Emily Deschanel plays Suzanne, a psychiatrist whose particularly challenging new patient Mae (Madeleine Arthur) seems in urgent need of shelter after escaping a cult. Naturally, Suzanne brings her home — and, of course, Suzanne has three daughters from whom Mae can be acclimated into high-school life, or on whom...

Netflix is, once again, exploring unsettling, thrilling themes, this time through its original limited series "Devil in Ohio." Based on the bestselling novel by Daria Polatin, who also serves as an executive producer, the upcoming series features "Bones" actor Emily Deschanel along with "Parenthood" actor Sam Jaeger and "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" star Madeleine Arthur.
"Devil in Ohio" centers on psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Deschanel) as she temporarily shelters a teenager and begins to experience unusual and unsettling occurrences within her home. The storyline definitely sounds like it could be based in real life, but it isn't entirely drawn from a singular true story. With "Devil in Ohio" hitting Netflix on Sept. 2, let's explore the inspiration behind the streamer's new spooky series.

It’s hard to recall a time when Netflix Original indeed meant “original”. Lately, it’s been adaptation after adaptation. The output varies in quality, most coming in at a mid-level rating best described as “background noise while I do my laundry” but a few surpass all expectations (The Queen’s Gambit). Others make me reconsider my subscription for good (Echoes). The latest to throw its hat in the ring is Devil in Ohio, not to be confused with the streamer’s Robert Pattinson film The Devil All the Time, a sinister tale incidentally also set in Ohio.
The eight-episode series puts to screen Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel of the same name, itself inspired by a true story. Bones star Emily Deschanel plays Suzanne, a mother and psychiatrist who invites her new young patient (a believably wide-eyed Madeleine Arthur) into her home when she’s brought into the hospital after a traumatic episode.

Another summer of content has come and gone in the streaming world. And to celebrate the arrival of fall, Netflix is filling its list of new releases for September 2022 with, what else? More content!
Netflix is never shy about loading up its servers each month but September 2022 is a particularly packed time for the streamer, particularly when it comes to movies. The list of prominent Netflix original movies includes: road trip thriller End of the Road (Sept. 9), Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes-starring dark comedy Do Revenge (Sept. 16), and the Marilyn Monroe epic biopic Blonde (Sept. 28).
That’s not even to mention the usual arrival of new library titles, which are particularly juicy this fall. September 1 sees the arrival of A Clockwork Orange, Clueless, Scarface, and more. Meanwhile This is the End is set to roll on Sept. 16.
