Not only did I get to experience the 3D coolness of Julia X 3D at Screamfest on Sunday, but I also got the chance to talk with the film’s writer/director P.J. Pettiette at the black carpet!
Adam Cray: How did you become involved with Julia X 3D?
P.J. Pettiette: My producing partner Claudie Viguerie and I did a picture in Argentina, then a picture I produced in Ireland, so I was looking for something to direct. I had this story idea and I thought “Well, what’s scary to me? Not supernatural.” There are a lot of films and I thought “I’ve done that” so with this one I thought: “If I were a woman and I was on an internet date and I got abducted, I’d be kind of scared…What if I was the woman that got abducted and I turned out to be a serial killer too?...

Julia X 3D begins innocently enough with beautiful blonde Julia on a date with the handsome guy she’s met online (known only as “The Stranger”). Before we know it, The Stranger chains Julia in his van and she’s forced to watch him dispose of his previous victim before bringing her to his warehouse lair. So begins a night-long descent into madness as Julia escapes and The Stranger chases her into the woods, through his isolated house, the swamp, and an abandoned school before the tables turn in an unexpected manner.
Kevin Sorbo is a menacing delight as The Stranger, the nutcase who’s been luring girls from online chatrooms to their certain doom all to the tune of The Carpenters’ “Close to You” on his iPod. As the film goes on, the song becomes a dark comical foreshadowing to the carnage that Sorbo’s character is about to inflict: we hear the song,...

With the Screamfest La Film Festival now under way through October 22nd at Manns Chinese 6 in Hollywood, California, we chatted recently with P.J. Pettiette, the director of one of the fest's selections, the 3D feature Julia X, and got the skinny on the horror-comedy flick, which is having its U.S. premiere this evening, October 16th.
Written by Matt Cunningham and produced by Greg Hall, Claude Viguerie and the film’s director Pettiette, Julia X 3D stars Valerie Azlynn, Kevin Sorbo, Alicia Leigh Willis, Joel Moore, and Ving Rhames and follows, "’Julia’ (Azlynn) who meets a man on her third Internet date. As she is is leaving, she is abducted by ‘The Stranger’ (Sorbo) and branded with an ‘X’. After a cat-and-mouse game, she eventually subdues The Stranger, and we discover that Julia and her younger sister, Jessica (Willis), are Internet predators themselves."

The resurgence of 3D technology to “enhance” films has been the subject of much debate over the past few years. Given the number of films that have been released under the 3D banner, it’s fair to say that the advanced technology has ignited a spark within movie studios and in the general public who have been yearning for the next best thing. Given the price of 3D cameras, many filmmakers and studios saw the route of “post conversion” as a valuable means to release their film under the popular banner; even if it negatively affected the quality of the film. In 2009, the movie-making gimmick was taken seriously when James Cameron released Avatar. Finally, the technology and its overall effect seemed to actually enhance the viewing experience. Cameron was able to create “the window effect” where the film accents the depth of field within the movie screen. Since Avatar, not...

Genre fans already know Kevin Sorbo for his long-running stints on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda, two shows for which he's earned international stardom on the small screen, and in recent years the erstwhile Hercules/Dylan Hunt has branched out by adding Christian flicks to his resume. But are audiences -- not to mention fans of his faith-based work -- ready to see Sorbo as the ultra-violent, masochistic lady-hunting sociopath he plays in P.J. Pettiette's horror satire Julia X 3D?...

The filmmakers behind the black comedy Julia X 3D hosted a press meet-and-greet event at the Highball yesterday as part of Fantastic Fest 2011. Producer and writer P. J. Pettiette (Bad Dreams, Jennifer's Shadow) made his directorial debut at Fantastic Fest 2011 with this film starring Kevin Sorbo (Andromeda, Hercules) and Valerie Azlynn. Co-producer Claudie Viguerie and director of photography Jason Goodman were also on hand to answer questions about Julia X 3D, which debuted in the Sunday night midnight screening and runs again today at 12:15 pm.
Due to a health emergency, lead actor Kevin Sorbo was unable to attend in person but participated via Skype as seen above. Sorbo attributed his visit to the emergency room Sunday night to too much work and travel, but is expected to be well enough to arrive in time for today's screening. Although he seemed rather exhausted, he was in high spirits and shared...

Kevin Sorbo played the title character in 111 episodes of the syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, ending his run in 1999. Perhaps he still feels typecast as a heroic figure, and so that prompted him to accept the lead role in Julia X 3D, in which he plays a serial killer known only as The Stranger. The movie is meant to play as a dark comedy, at least according to director P.J. Pettiette, who introduced the film for its Fantastic Fest premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse. Some members of the late-night audience took Pettiette at his word, laughing when The Stranger punched Julia (Valerie Azlynn) in the face, just before tuning into The Carpenters for inspiration on his earphones while shaving and humming along to the mellow soft-rock song...

Premiering at Fantastic Fest 2011 is Julia X 3D, a new horror/comedy/thriller starring Kevin Sorbo and Joel David Moore, and here’s some new bloody stills from the film.
Directed by P.J. Pettiette in 3D. Julia (Valerie Azlynn) stars as an alluring predator who meets her match on an internet date with a man whose hidden profile is a blend of Ted Bundy and Hannibal Lechter. The man in question is none other than “Hercules” himself, Kevin Sorbo, who The Hollywood Reporter says “he’s a mesmeric nutcase.” The Reporter continues, “The depth is enhanced, as well, by a multi-dimensional plot with doses of cheeky humor and verbal panache, as well as in-your-face visual thrusts that make keen use of the format.

Bet you never thought you would have read that headline, huh? Kevin Sorbo, Joel David Moore, and sexy Valerie Azlynn star in the serial killer thriller/comedy Julia X 3D from first time director P.J. Pettiette. The film is gearing up for its Fantastic Fest premiere.
Here’s the plot: “Credited only as The Stranger, Kevin Sorbo’s character in Julia X 3D (much like in real life) is completely irresistible to women. Turns out the ladies should learn to exercise a bit of caution for, you see, The Stranger is a serial killer. Meeting women on the Internet and setting up dates, The Stranger brings his victims back for a little bit of torture and murder and then brands each one with the next letter in the alphabet. He’s been up to it for a while, too, as his latest victim sports a “W.” However, things don’t...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Fabio weren’t totally gay? The answer is "Kevin Sorbo". This all-American hunk made a name for himself as the studly, oft-shirtless Hercules on the mid-1990’s TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. 6'4" Kevin has since played the tall handsome dude in Kull the Conqueror, Walking Tall 2, and the sci-fi TV series Andromeda. You might have seen him in the 2008 horror film Never Cry Werewolf or the sci-fi flick Something Beneath. He just wrapped the new fantasy movie Tales of an Ancient Empire and the comedy series Wolf Canyon, and he makes an appearance as Mr. Phoenix in the exploitationsploitation flick Bitch Slap, out this month in theaters. Kevin is so sweet and devastatingly handsome that he’s quite possibly the sexiest Scary Stud of the Month we’ve ever had. He exudes sex appeal and charm, and it...
