RuPaul, the host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” has won the Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program and continues to reign as the most-awarded host in Emmys history.
This marks the eighth consecutive win for RuPaul, who also holds the record for most wins by a person of color.
During his speech, the producer and host said, “I’m so proud to be a part of this medium, you invited me to be a part of this. You are my family.” He went on to thank his family and World of Wonder producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey.
He shared a story about being “at the bottom” and sleeping on his friend Larry Tee’s couch. “He told me, ‘These are terrible times. Remember who you are, don’t give up.'” Speaking to the audience, RuPaul said, “I want to tell all these kids out here in the business,...

That sound you heard on Emmy nominations morning was the “Parks and Recreation” group chat blowing up. Three of the cult TV comedy’s cast members were nominated at the 2023 Emmys, making this year’s ceremony a full-on “Parks & Rec” reunion. Amy Poehler is cited for her work hosting the reality show “Baking It” (alongside Maya Rudolph), Aubrey Plaza is up for her supporting role on “The White Lotus,” and Nick Offerman is nominated for his guest stint on “The Last of Us.”
For those keeping track at home, only Poehler earned Emmy love back in the “Parks & Rec” days, which aired between 2009 and 2015 on NBC. She received six consecutive Best Comedy Actress bids (2010-2015) for her role as Leslie Knope, the overachieving department head in Pawnee, Indiana. Poehler also picked up two producing bids when the show was recognized for Best Comedy Series (2011 and ’15.)

Emmy voting has begun! Oscar season has begun! What a weekend!
It appears to be the battle of the Academy viewing portals as final Emmy voting begins. The Television Academy is not only offering the digital ballot to the 20,000-plus eligible voting members, but also a corresponding link to videos of the shows they are being asked to consider. Meanwhile, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has opened its digital viewing portal for Oscar season, which kicks off in earnest in a few days at Venice, Telluride and Toronto (but really is already well in progress thanks to “Barbenheimer”). More on the latter in a beat, but first….

The saga of replacing the late Alex Trebek as the host of Jeopardy has featured many twists and turns, and now it’s moved into head-to-head competition. Jeopardy's permanent co-hosts Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik received individual nominations for Outstanding Host for a Game Show, meaning they will compete with each other alongside Wheel of Fortune's Pat Sajak, Family Feud's Steve Harvey, and Password's Keke Palmer.
Usually, multiple hosts from the same show are nominated together for Emmy purposes. This year, all five Queer Eye hosts are nominated as one single entity in the Host for a Reality Competition category, as are Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph for Baking It. But Jennings and Bialik, who have been alternating as Jeopardy hosts since they took over officially after the Mike Richards fiasco in 2021, are nominated separately.

As an executive producer of “Top Chef,” she also shares in the show’s nomination for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, and her Hulu series “Taste the Nation,” where she serves double duty as host and executive producer, earned its own nomination for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special.
“I’m over the moon here in Sicily!!! I am elated and honored to be nominated for both shows since ‘Taste The Nation’ is my passion project and it’s my last hoorah on “Top Chef,” Lakshmi said via a statement. “Thank you so much to everyone who voted and supported us, both my crews!! This year, for the fifth time in Emmys history, the number of nomination slots in the Best Reality Host category has decreased from six to five. Although all but one of the four previous cases resulted in full slates of immediate repeat nominees, Gold Derby’s users have come to a solid consensus that, this time, only four 2022 contenders will return and that they will be joined by first-timer Alan Cumming (“The Traitors”). Given the boldness of this prediction in such an instance, the idea of a previously nominated but long ignored host making a comeback should also be explored, since that outcome is statistically just as likely.
Cumming sits in fifth place on our odds-based predictions list behind seven-time consecutive winner RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”), the “Queer Eye” quintet, Nicole Byer (“Nailed It!”) and Padma Lakshmi (“Top Chef”). Despite having precedent in their favor, the six-person “Shark Tank” team...

Since 2003, the Best Competition Program Emmy has been awarded annually in recognition of reality entertainment structured around talent or endurance contests. This year, there are 59 such options for TV academy members to choose from on their first-round nominations ballots, which means there will be five nominees announced on July 12. This is down from 81 entrants in 2022 and 67 in 2021.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite competition programs. This time, instead of being able to vote for as many shows as they want, they must limit their choices to five, reflecting the number of eventual nominees. As opposed to the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Amy Poehler and her Paper Kite Productions partner Kate Arend are building a mini docuseries empire. The two created competition series Making It, followed by last year’s Baking It, and now they’ve teamed up with the producers of the original Queer Eye for The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. “We like to try to work in the unscripted space in a way that isn’t about intimidation or humiliation,” Poehler says. “We’re not that interested in watching people fight.”
The actor, who narrates the show about an organizer, designer and psychologist who help people clean out their homes both in preparation for death and as a healing process, gathered at the Crosby Street Hotel for a live THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media, where they discussed the making of the show and the “cathartic release” they get while watching.

NBCU Launch is unveiling two new below-the-line diversity, equity and inclusion efforts aimed at boosting representation in key production roles within the TV industry.
The Below-the-Line Traineeship and Production Assistant Initiative will offer opportunities for paid on-the-job experiences on NBCUniversal TV productions to qualified talent from communities historically marginalized within the industry. The pipeline programs will focus on increasing the pool of talent of underrepresented groups ready to be hired directly onto projects.
“Below-the-line production roles have been historically underserved across our industry when we look at inclusion efforts. Our first major endeavor to increase representation on our production crews across Universal Studio Group and our entertainment networks are just a start in addressing this critical need,” Jeanne Mau, senior vp, TV Programming Diversity Equity & Inclusion, NBCUniversal, said in a statement.

Audacy’s Cadence13 Studios today announced a partnership with Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning writer, actress, producer and director Amy Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions – the production company behind hit shows including Russian Doll, Broad City and Harlem – for a 30-episode comedy franchise featuring stories that parody and pay homage to popular themes in the podcast space.
The franchise will be broken out into three seasons of 10 episodes. Each will focus on a central character and distinct theme; however, characters will make crossover appearances across stories and seasons.
The first installment in the partnership, Say More with Dr? Sheila, is slated to launch later this year. The 10-episode season stars Poehler as Dr? Sheila, a fictional therapist with questionable methods and credentials counseling a new couple every week. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.
The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.
The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

The 75th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday night, wrapping up the final weekend of guild awards before the Oscars next week. Both screenplay categories are tight at the Oscars, but not all the contenders were present at WGA.

Amy Poehler knows she probably won’t make everyone laugh. However, the comedian who became famous for her stint on Saturday Night Live has struck the funny bone of a significant fan base. She’s proven her mettle across various TV shows and movies and racked up a slew of punch lines along the way.
Poehler doesn’t show any signs of slowing, though she’s traded some of her work in front of the camera for producing and directing. For Poehler, comedy is an “art form,” and she welcomes chances to analyze and debate its role in culture — even when it can land comedians in hot water.

Fox's The Cleaning Lady inched up in the ratings for its highly anticipated season finale.
The Cleaning Lady Season 2 Episode 11 had 2.1 million viewers and a 0.3 rating.
The Cleaning Lady Season 2 Episode 12 followed with 2 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.
The drama series rose from last week's viewership low. Fox has yet to renew or cancel the show.
At this stage, it is on the bubble. We should get a more definite answer about its future in the coming weeks.
The show has proven to be a solid performer in delayed viewing, so the network will likely wait to see how the final episodes of the season stack up.
From a creative standpoint, there's plenty of scope for a third season, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed the cast and crew get more episodes.
The Voice aired across two hours for NBC, with the first hour securing 6.9 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.

Peacock baking competition series Baking It is back for season two right in time for the holidays — and this time with a familiar face stepping in as co-host.
After Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg led the first season, Amy Poehler has replaced Samberg for the second go-around, teaming up with close friend and fellow SNL alum Rudolph. Samberg was off shooting a movie and unavailable to return for season two, Poehler tells The Hollywood Reporter, teasing, “He luckily and gratefully let me step into his sweaters.”
Poehler has previously hosted three seasons of crafting competition show Making It (which inspired Baking It) with former Parks and Recreation co-star Nick Offerman, so when she heard of Samberg’s scheduling conflicts, “I was thrilled. Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph artfully dodged the question of who should succeed Lorne Michaels on “Saturday Night Live” during a Tuesday guest spot on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
Appearing via Zoom, the comedians and “Baking It” co-hosts asked their fellow “SNL” alum to hit them with a “Jake Tapper tough one.”
“We know you usually do softballs, but I don’t know, try a tough question for once,” Poehler joked.
When they got what they asked for, the duo pretended that their Zoom screen had frozen, cutting off their microphone so that their answers were unintelligible. While dropping in random words here and there, they pantomimed various gestures, including a rocking-baby-to sleep motion, getting a laugh out of their host.

While saltier reality shows including Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise and HBO Max’s “FBoy Island” are still very much a thing — and very popular — there has also been a bumper crop of “nice” reality programming infiltrating the arena.

The 74th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday, one of the last guild stops of Oscar season (the American Society of Cinematographers Awards were the same night). Did they provide clarity on two of the closest Oscar contests, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay?
The thing about the WGA Awards, of course, is that the guild’s rigid rules stipulate that only members can compete, rendering numerous Oscar contenders ineligible every year. And there were quite a few this go-round. Ineligible original scripts include “Annette,” “Belfast,” “A Hero,” “Mass,” “Parallel Mothers,” “Pig” and “The Worst Person in the World.” Adapted screenplays forced to sit out include “Cyrano,” “Drive My Car,” “The Lost Daughter,” “Passing” and “The Power of the Dog.”
In original, the WGA nominated “Being the Ricardos” (Aaron Sorkin), “Don’t Look Up” (Adam McKay & David Sirota), “The French Dispatch” (Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola & Hugo Guinness & Jason Schwartzman...

In original, the WGA nominated “Being the Ricardos” (Aaron Sorkin), “Don’t Look Up” (Adam McKay & David Sirota), “The French Dispatch” (Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola & Hugo Guinness & Jason Schwartzman...

Charter Communications is giving free access to Peacock Premium free for one year to Spectrum TV subscribers through its deal with Comcast’s NBCUniversal.
Also under the pact, Spectrum Internet customers are eligible to get Peacock Premium (normally $4.99/month) for 90 days at no additional cost. The Peacock promotions were included as part of the Charter-NBCU multiyear distribution deal reached a earlier this year.
The offer is available to eligible Charter customers starting Monday (Dec. 13). The offer will let Charter’s Spectrum TV and broadband customers stream tens of thousands of hours of movies and shows, live news and sports, and more from across NBCU’s portfolio and other sources. Peacock Premium, which includes ads, provides a more expansive bucket of content than the totally free, ad-supported version of Peacock.

The battle for the Pac-12 representative in the New Year’s Day Rose Bowl was fought on Friday evening, with No. 17 Utah handily beating No. 10 Oregon by a 38-10 score to win the conference championship.
Devin Lloyd returned an interception for a touchdown and Cam Rising threw for another score for the winners. It is the first Rose Bowl berth in that school’s history, and drew an 0.7 and 3.51 million viewership to top the ratings night for ABC.
The CBS crime drama lineup was a tick behind football, with Swat (0.5/5.12 million), Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods (0.4/5.65 million) all performing strongly with new episodes.
At Fox, perennial leader the WWE Friday Night SmackDown came in with an 0.5, thanks to the return of The Beast, Brock Lesnar, who came back from an indefinite suspension

Peacock is getting into the holiday spirit with The Housewives of the North Pole, a new original movie starring Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) and Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad).
The highly-anticipated flick is set to launch on December 9 on the streaming service, and it looks like a lot of fun!
"The Christmas Queens of North Pole, Vermont, Trish (Kyle Richards) and Diana (Betsy Brandt), have won the Best Holiday House decorating competition every year for the past nine years," reads the intriguing synopsis.
"But days before Christmas, a friendship-ending argument sparks a town-wide feud and draws the attention of a national magazine writer hoping to make a name for herself with her scintillating exposé."
It is a compelling hook and somewhat interesting to have Richards move from one of the most successful reality shows to a movie with a similar title.
