We caught up with horror screenwriter Patrick Melton (the man behind such frightful fare – along with cohort Marcus Dunstan – as the Feast series, Saw IV through 3D and The Collector) last week to chat about The Collection, Black Light, Piranha 3Dd, his new project Rise, and more.
“The Collection is in the final stages of post-production,” said the 36-year-old Illinois transplant of progress on the flick, which he co-wrote with director Marcus Dunstan and which has been snapped up for distribution by Liddell Entertainment, who distributed its predecessor The Collector. “We tested the film about a month or so ago in Chatsworth, California, and it tested wonderfully. Actually, it was the highest testing movie we've written. So we were very pleased with that. As a result the picture is locked, and we're putting on the spit and polish. Charlie Clouser of Saw fame is composing the score as we speak.

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired a sci-fi/action script called Rise, penned by first time screenwriter David Karlak, who teamed up with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (Saw). Details on the project are being kept hush-hush, but Roy Lee (Old Boy) and Underground, along with Lawrence Grey (The Apocalypse) will produce the project.
Karlak was the VFX Supervisor on The Collector, and garnered some acclaim as director on the short film The Candidate.

Normally I wouldn't cover this project without more info, but three of the names involved have a strong genre presence. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Pictures has bought an untitled action/sci-fi pitch created by David Karlak, marking the scribe's first studio sale. Roy Lee (The Ring, Godzilla, 7500) and Underground will team to produce the project, the details of which are under wraps. Karlak, who has gained buzz around town thanks to his short film "The Candidate", is repped by Paradigm, Underground and attorney Dave Feldman. Writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan - known for Feast I-iii, Saw IV-VI and Piranha 3Dd - teamed with Karlak to write the pitch.

[1] Last year saw the debut of The Viewfinder List [2], which aims to do for aspiring filmmakers what The Black List does for screenwriters. Compiled from a poll of "studio executives, producers, and creatives," The Viewfinder List reflects the most-liked shorts, commercials, and/or music videos of the year. The inaugural list in 2010 included such up-and-comers as Patrick Jean, whose Pixels is due out in 2013, 47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch, and, um, Alejandro González Iñárritu. This year's list has Dan Trachtenberg's Portal: No Escape on top, along with a few other videos you may recognize if you've been paying attention to /Film for the past year. Or even if you haven't -- that adorable Super Bowl Volkswagen ad with the little Darth Vader kid also made the cut, as did Chris Marrs Piliero's video for The Black Keys. Check out the full 2011 Viewfinder List -- with video! -- after the jump.

Exclusive: Here’s the new Viewfinder List, the entertainment industry survey which polls studio executives, producers and creatives for their top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos. Much like The Black List, the Viewfinder List recognizes short form video content and the up and coming helmers responsible for it. Several helmers on last year’s list got feature jobs; how will this year’s helmers fare? The list was created by Jeff Schroeder (Brillstein Entertainment Partners), Aaron Schmidt (Langley Park Pictures) and Patrick Chu (The Montecito Picture Company). Though Fantastic Fest still has three days left packed with movies, the best of the best have been revealed. Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70+ films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!
Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! So be sure to keep an eye out for...

Hollywoodnews.com: “You’re Next,” Adam Wingard’s horror thriller about a family terrorized my masked intruders, on the Best Picture award at this year’s Fantastic Fest, which hosted thousands of genre-film fans in Austin, Texas.
The year’s fest opened with a screening of Tom Six’s “Human Centipede” sequel, and featured a regional premiere of Morgan Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope.”
Both “Next” and “Hope” played the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month before stopping in Austin. “Next” practically swept the Horror category at the festival, grabbing Director for Wingard, Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett, and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson. Sean Harris, meanwhile, earned Best Actor for “A Lonely Place To Die.”

While Emmett and I will spend the next few days catching up on posting our reviews from Fantastic Fest, tonight Alamo Drafthouse owner and Fantastic Fest Creative Director Tim League announced the 2011 Fantastic Award winners. It’s great to see Adam Wingard’s You’re Next take home best film and best director in the category of horror as well as Milocrorze: A Love Story (a move that made my list of best film of the year so far) take home best feature in the category of Fantastic.

Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.
The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.
Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.

Fantastic Fest Announces List Of Short Films which includes must sees ‘Cop Hard’ and ‘Infernal Nuns’
The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.

Anybody can tell a good tale, spin a quality yarn so to speak, if given an hour and a half. But to accomplish that same feat in 15 minutes or so, now that's doing something. And Fantastic Fest has announced the lineup of 50 films doing just that for this year's program.
The Fantastic Fest shorts will be presented during the festival, which runs September 22-29 in Austin, Texas. With running times as long as thirty minutes and a short as two, and coming from over a dozen countries, the films look as diverse as they will be entertaining. Take a gander at the huge list complied below, and for those of you lucky enough to be in the great state of Texas during the fest, we envy you.

All Men Are Called Robert (2011)
